PG Mike Conley (1st Team All BIG, NBA All-Star, Oscar Winner, Minnesota Timberwolves)

Anyone else notice during the post game interview yesterday when Conley and Oden were both forward, slightly downward (not into the camera), and not at each other...Conley offered a T-shirt to Oden, Oden didn't notice, Conley nudged him, and Oden--without even a glance--took it? Two things I picked up from that: 1.) There's an exceptional mental bond and unspoken communication between the two, and 2.) Conley may be way smaller than Oden, but it's Conley that drives their relationship.

whenever i see oden laughing or especially happy, which has been rare lately, it's usually when he's talking or responding to conley. greg is also the most vocal when mike throws him a bad pass. this happened yesterday. greg rolled to the basket and mike whipped a pass too hard and too high. greg immediately yelled at him. what i'm--to be an armchair psychologist--getting at is that conley is oden's emotional catalyst.

another thing that i love about conley is that he is most happy when others succeed. when he scores, he is generally expressionless. when he, say, throws an alley oop or even just watches someone else make a great play that is unrelated to something he's done, he gets really excited.

by the way, that behind the back dribble in between two defenders at the 1:25 mark of the first half was an absolute sick move. i had to watch that in slow motion about five times just to comprehend what he did and how he maneuvered his legs to do it.

I hope someone puts it up on youtube. It was ridiculous.

When Mike pulled that move we jumped out of our couch. Must have rewound that like 5 times on our DVR. Sickest move of the game and it didn't even net us any points!

what gets me about that move is how he positioned his right leg for the behind-the-back. his left arm and right leg moved in such a tandem that i can't even begin to comprehend mike's foresight and body control.

Stock Up
While the nation focuses on the exploits of Greg Oden, perhaps an even bigger story is emerging in the play of fellow freshman Mike Conley Jr. While Oden has been nothing short of dominating in his time on the court, he nearly as many minutes off of it. The Buckeyes almost immediately gave up ground upon Oden’s foul trouble or conditioning induced-exit, but the scintillating play of Conley during the stretches Oden was on the bench is nearly the sole reason Ohio State is back in the final four. Conley led the second half comeback against Tennessee, and followed it up with another latter stanza charge against Memphis.

Conley, known for his ability to play under control just as much as his athleticism, had his hands full with a Memphis backcourt that knows how to hound opposing ball-handlers. The Tigers came at Conley the entire game, and while the freshman did commit an uncharacteristic 5 turnovers on the night, he proved once and for all that there aren’t many defenders on any level capable of stopping him when he decides to take the ball to the basket. Conley does a marvelous job of controlling tempo and playing under control, but still manages to find the right moments to bury the needle on his way to the basket.

High praise from Calipari in these quotes.

ozone.Memphisquotebook

...

"Our whole thing was don't try to steal it from him, you're not going to get it.," said Calipari.

"We're making a run and he (Memphis guard Willie Kemp) tried to steal it and he shot a layup on us. I said 'Willie, you can't make that play. The ball is on a string.'

"He's not a great shooter, but he makes every free throw and makes that three. He's my kind of guy. Doesn't matter what it looks like, but at gut-check time he's making it," Calipari said.

There is much discussion about whether Oden stays or goes, but doesn't seem to be much thought to what Conley will do IF we win the national championship.

I think there is little chance of him leaving after 1 year (but I believe he is ready). There is no question he'd be the best PG on the Cavs today.

If we win a national championship and he shines at the final 4, like he did in the regional...is Mike's departure a legitimate concern?

all we have to go on is what junior and his father recently said. anything else is just a plain old guess.

We're purely speculating with anybody around which this discussions occur...including Oden.

If you go by what Greg has said since day 1 you'd have to assume he's leaning towards coming back.

while that's the case, just last week we received word from the two about their plans for junior.

we'd have to assume he's leaning toward coming back? i don't think so. he's been too ambiguous and uncertain to know which direction he's leaning.
