PF Jared Sullinger (2x 1st Team ALL B1G & All American, Anyang KGC, S.Korea)

BuckeyeGrove.com - AAU Nationals: 16U action rules the day (free)

Despite getting limited touches in the team's offense on Monday, Ohio State bound center Jared Sullinger makes it work when he gets the opportunity.

When Sullinger gets his backside anchored on a defender and when position is established, forget about it. The big man is going to score and he's winning the post battle. The five-star big man finished with 14 points (5-8 FG, 4-6 FT) and 13 rebounds in the match-up.

What else can be said about his dominance at the 16-and-under level that hasn't already been said this year? There wasn't a player that could stop him or even really slow him down. The future Ohio State center was a man against boys all season long and he helped his team close out the year with a 69-1 record dating back to March. For the second year in a row, Sullinger helped All Ohio win the Nationals and nearly every coach that watched the team play wondered aloud, "How good would Sullinger and All Ohio be at the 17-and-under level?" Chances are, Sullinger and his boys would have been a shoe-in for the elite eight and potentially even further.

NEAL C. LAURON Dispatch
Jared Sullinger and his father and coach, Satch, would like to see Northland win a state title next spring.

Reggie Rankin remembers the year he coached the ninth-grade team at Beechcroft High School, driving over to varsity coach Satch Sullinger's home for his scouting assignments and seeing the baby of the family in his crib.

"Jared was so damn big, he'd shake the crib (so hard) I thought the thing was coming down," said Rankin, a former player at Linden and Ohio University. "He was a huge baby."

Jared Sullinger is still big, and getting bigger.

Fresh from helping his AAU team, All-Ohio Red, to a second consecutive age-group national championship last week in Orlando, Fla., the 6-foot-7 junior at Northland -- where his dad now coaches -- is off to Dallas this week. He is among 14 players in his 16-year-old age group selected to represent the United States in the adidas Nations tournament, which begins Thursday. Teams from Africa, Asia, Canada, Europe and Latin America also will participate.

He also has been invited to the Elite 24 game Aug. 22 in Rucker Park in New York. It will be televised by ESPN.

One weekend a month since April, adidas has flown Sullinger and his teammates to different locations -- Portland, Ore., Newark, N.J., and Los Angeles -- for two-day training camps in preparation for the Nations tournament.

Wearing his adidas gear, "It's pretty cool walking through the airport," Sullinger said. "Everybody looks at you (wondering) if you're an NBA player or not."

And what does he say if asked?

"Just an ordinary basketball player from Columbus, Ohio," he said.

Getting picked to go to Rucker Park is sweet:)

Almost the best thing about the article above:biggrin:.

Sullinger has room to grow; an examination when he had his broken foot last year revealed his growth plates to still be open, his father said. "They said he could be a 7-footer," said Satch, who is 6-8.

Of concern to some observers is not how tall but how wide Sullinger might get. He gained weight while he was injured last summer, and he checked in at 262 pounds for a tournament in St. Louis in June. But he said this week he weighs between 245 and 250.

Basketball: Sullinger leads team to title in tournament in Dallas
Tuesday, August 12, 2008

Jared Sullinger of Northland scored 24 points to lead the United States class of 2010 team to a 95-92 victory over the U.S. class of 2009 in the championship game of the adidas Nations tournament in Dallas.

The 2010 team finished the three-day tournament undefeated against teams from Africa, Asia, Europe and South America. Besides Sullinger, who has committed to Ohio State, the 2010 team also included OSU targets Adreian Payne of Dayton and Trae Golden of Powder Springs, Ga.
Nice to see Jared playing on the same team with Payne and Golden.:)

Jared Sullinger, 6-8, PF/C, 2010, Committed to Ohio State

The inside reference for the 2010 US team, Jared Sullinger (#2 Scout, #3 Rivals, #7 ESPN) came up huge in the final game to help knock off the 2009 high schoolers. There is very little doubt in our minds that Sullinger is going to be an outstanding get for Thad Matta and the Ohio State Buckeyes, and he comes with the added bonus of being the type of player who will likely have to stick around for a few years to develop his all-around game.

Sullinger is an undersized center (around 6-8 or so) right now who is a true load in the post. He establishes position extremely well, and has the ability to score very effectively with fantastic touch around the rim. He has a great feel for operating inside, showing fundamental footwork and an extremely effective jump-hook. He has no problem finishing thorough contact, and is pretty quick off his feet finishing at the rim, showing a good wingspan, quick feet and phenomenal hands which allow him to catch just about anything thrown at him, and also make him a fantastic offensive rebounder.

Besides being a rare and highly coveted post presence, Sullinger is even more attractive a prospect due to the fact that he plays hard and has a very nice basketball IQ to boot, which makes him a fairly effective passer, particularly passing out of double teams. He is an unselfish player and seems to have strong intangibles from what we could tell too.

In terms of things he could improve on, Sullinger will need to be able to use his left hand better on the offensive end if he?s to be able to reach his potential as a scorer at the collegiate level. Being able to face the basket and put the ball on the floor (which he can do a little bit right now) would make him that much more versatile, as well as adding a more effective jump-shot?as his range currently extends to about 15 feet or so (with nice touch and solid form actually), but he rarely shows it.

Defensively, Sullinger is very limited on the perimeter, as he doesn?t have great lateral quickness and really struggles stepping out to guard the pick and roll, but also isn?t very tall or explosive and thus isn?t a shot-blocking presence inside the paint. Losing weight in order to maximize his athleticism could help him a bit in this regard.

All in all, Sullinger probably won?t ever be considered the most attractive NBA prospect in the world due to his average physical tools, but could definitely develop into serious NBA draft material if he takes himself seriously. He?s drawing comparisons that range from Richard Hendrix to Kevin Love, but to us he looks like a carbon copy of Lonny Baxter at the moment. Despite his obvious limitations, it?s really hard not to like what he offers as a prospect, and he appears to have a great future ahead of him.

Six-foot-8 power forward Jared Sullinger (Columbus, Ohio/Northland) has been crushing opponents and simply makes his team win. When he is in the game, you know it.

We have evaluated him since he won the 15-under Nationals in Detroit in July 2007 to just recently in last week's Boost Mobile Elite 24, and continue to be impressed by the longtime Ohio State pledge. His AAU team All Ohio-Red surrounds him with good players and makes sure he gets touches, which is important for his development.

The art of the low post game is becoming a rare sight in basketball. For such a young player, Sullinger demonstrates almost a mini-clinic with his back to the basket as he sets up shop. The mechanics of the low post game take position and patience. Sullinger knows where he is on the floor, which block he is on and where he wants the ball. He gives his passer an excellent target as he gets a low base and makes and maintains contact as he catches the pass. His head is up to locate his defender and he is ready to score with his soft touch, drop step, jump hook or turnaround jumper.
