Sullinger tops the top 100

OK, so I?m on vacation and still online. I hurt my back, so I?m not much good around the house until my doctor hooks me up with whatever Tiger Woods was taking. Then I?ll get my swing fixed. Then . . . Easy, big fella. The PING G10s are forgiving, but . . .
So while I sit, I figured I?d pass along this from the NBA Players Association Top 100 Camp, which concluded over the weekend in Charlottesville, Va. Among the developments there was rising junior Jared Sullinger of Northland picking up where he left off last summer, when he was the MVP of the 15-and-under AAU nationals.
Sullinger didn?t win the MVP in Charlottesville, but at least one scouting service, Hoop Scoop, thought he was the best player in camp, which included not only Sullinger?s class of 2010 but older players from 2009 as well.

I have continued to think that once he moved up against some tougher competition that he might struggle some due to his height, but he truly has not...

At this point I would say that he is going to start as a frosh and be frosh of the league unless of course Thomas takes that honor from him...

I really don't think anybody knows what position he will play once he gets to Ohio State. So much will depend on how Z develops, whether we get Payne, and Thomas has been playing both positions SF/PF this summer. Also, in Matta's system, so many parts are interchangeable but Sullinger has really been putting up big numbers this summer and if his development continues at the same rate next year he might play any position he wants to play. Maybe even a little PG:)

Litl,
I agree that it is hard to project his position on several levels! I do think it's pretty safe to project he won't be at PG tho.

It comes down to C or PF.

Some of it might be how much he grows between now and then - will he be able to play C if he remains 6'6 or so? Some think he will and that he is destined for the "Matta one-inside" position regardless of height.

Some might be how good returning C's Dallas(SR) and Z(JR) are by then - would he be able to bump one or both out of the rotation at C?

Or maybe how good the C's are compared to how good the potential PF candidates ( SR Kecman and other frosh ) are then! This is where Payne, and more-likely and strongly, Thomas might come into the picture.

If we do get Payne ( and I want that BADLY ) then will he be groomed as Dallas' eventual replacement as a D enforcing C, or will he be looked at as a 4 to get earlier PT ( if the returning Cs are established )? If Sullinger and Payne are looked at as 4's then we'd probably be looking at more of a "traditional power forward look" instead of the outside-centric 4's Matta often uses - like Kecman SYL Harris etc.

Thomas could end up playing the "Matta outside 4" or the wing. That may also depend on who returns at wing. If Turner ( would be SR ), Buford ( would be JR ) and Diebler (SR) all happen to still be here then I'd guess Thomas is a 4 that year. If 2/3 of those guys are gone, then he'll probably start at the "3/WF spot" instead. If 2/3 are still here, then it is a real grey area - my guess but I'm sure that any of those 3 would be tough to beat out as wily vets - yet you'd think a talent like Thomas would HAVE TO START somewhere.

So I guess that if Dallas is a returning SR starter who projects as all league at C and Z has developed into a solid JR backup C, and a lot of talented veteran wings are still here, it could be a BATTLE ROYALE between Sullinger and Thomas and maybe vet JR Kecman for the 4 spot that year! LOL Payne probably would stick to fighting for PT at C in that case.

As much as I want Payne and Sibert, I think both may well find themselves rather far down the depth chart their frosh year here ( as will Wright ) - which is a GREAT THING IMO and a sign of how good we'll be and how far we've COME! I just hope they have the foresight and patience to come and learn and wait their turn at greatness.
