Peyton Hillis (official thread)

http://www.cleveland.com/browns/index.ssf/2011/04/no_madden_curse_-_browns_comme.html

The so-called curse is hogwash to fans like jazzflute582, who writes,
"I want Hillis on this cover so bad. I don't care about the Madden Curse honestly because the curse usually hits good teams that were good the year before and we all know how the Browns finished last year so there's really nothing to worry about. So if Hillis gets onto the cover, what's going to happen? The team goes 5-11 again? What's new? Madden Curse + Cleveland Curse= No More Curse. And one more thing. About all the injuries that occur to those on the madden cover, anyone remember 07 or 08 (whichever year) when Tom Brady blew out his knee in the first quarter of the first game? He wasn't on the cover the year before. My point is, big name players, no name players it doesnt matter. Football players get hurt. It's not flag football."

Intelligent people are really arguing that the Madden Curse is a real thing? Maybe if I squint really hard I can make out a coherent pattern... Several of the guys on the Curse list are older RBs who got dinged up (Eddie, Faulk, Alexander), Barry retired on his own, and Favre should have. McNabb sure had a great 2008-2009 for a guy who's career came to an end, same with Culpepper in 2004, and I think Vick had some other stuff going on. Ray Lewis, Vince Young, Larry Fitzgerald were not Cursed. At least several of the guys signed big contracts before their Madden year, so maybe there's a correlation there too if we look for it.

Intelligent people need me to explain a third time that there isn't a magical force at play here? For those keeping score at home, that means there isn't actually a curse, but quite a string of bad luck.

I was being a bit hyperbolic about their careers, but as a skins fan I have blocked out my short term memory re McNabb.

that is a very real issue. Guys don't play as well the year after a contract (earning) year.

I'm not sure how that is relevant to injury, which is half of the list.

No explanation needed, but there's also no need to go back over it year-by-year and lay out all the evidence just because someone doesn't knock-wood for Peyton's sake. Hillis is a power-back who has been injured before, so let's not ignore the reality of life in the NFL if he misses the back half of another losing season in Cleveland. (Madden Curse is not even original: people have been playing the SI Jinx game for ages, which suggests it's more a matter of higher visibility making injuries seem more pronounced.)

And if Hillis is the cover athlete and ends up missing half a season or more, it is a pretty fun and interesting coincidence given him not missing a game last year.http://www.buckeyeplanet.com/forum/editpost.php?do=editpost&p=1909041

Just for fun, here's an analysis of data from 1988-2004 which concludes that "if a running back was productive last year and healthy entering training camp", he can be expected to miss an average of 2.4 games this season (along with 12% of last year's healthy productive RBs missing half or more of the next season).

Is there a statistic like that for QB injuries?

RBs obviously get dinged up pretty easily and wear out.

Tonyank, Brees was the face of the rebuilt NOLA area after Katrina.

EA made the obvious announcement on 4/22 that he was the cover athlete.

?I didn?t even get to enjoy being the cover boy for a day before the jinx hit,? Brees said. ?I?m literally sitting there on my couch admiring the thing for the first time when breaking news hits CNN that there is a massive amount of oil leaking out of a damaged rig in ? you guessed it ? the Gulf of Mexico, right off the coast of ? you guessed it ? Louisiana, which is the state where ? you guessed it ? New Orleans is. I just hope they don?t put me on the cover ofSports Illustratedthis year. I don?t want a sink hole to swallow the French Quarter.?

What a terrific rebuttal. I'm convinced, since Japan has so much relevance to an American game, American company, and sport with almost no Japanese participation, unlike many other sports.

EA is in California, yet your curse tsunami didn't touch them despite sharing a common coast.

Hell, even if he gets the cover and gets run over by Donte Stallworth the next day it'll still be the greatest thing the Browns have accomplished in my lifetime.
