Penn State Cult (Joe Knew)

The biggest difference (outside of the unbelievably heinous nature of the crime and cover up) is the fiefdom. No matter how crazy fans are at other schools and no matter how popular the head coach, they don't have the power to cover up things 1/100th this bad.
Gotta disagree, 86. SEC coaches have gotten away with murder for decades. The omerta at these places has to be legendary.

I don't know.

Only if the murder guarantees you more wins.
Eh, you're probably right, Nutria. After the tattoo-gate BS and now this shit at Penn State, I'm having a hard time getting excited about College Football. It's like the insane are running the asylum here. Our (we fans) passion and love for all thing "our team" has been taken advantage of and used. It really puts it in perspective for me. It's making it difficult for me to even put my SEC-hate on.

At the Alabama schools, I think it is literally a situation where you have to leave the state for your safety if you snitch.

I also think it's a situation where if an Alabama or Auburn President oversaw an athletic department culture where major violations were self-reported to the ncaa and he fired their Jim Tressel as a result, he could start packing his bags tomorrow.....if he could make it to the state line alive.

No joke or hyperbole. I think Gee would have faced realdeath threats in Alabama.

Alabama self reported the text book scandal and vacated wins because of it.
No postseason ban though.

And again, it depends on the volation.

Cheating is acceptable until you get caught.
And even then, you blame your rival.
It is acceptable, because it produces wins.

An actual crime (murder, rape) is completely different.
And most fan bases here would revolt against the criminal.

I've been away all day and get home, hit the wire, and read (msn) that we lost a STAR recruit.
And my wife hears me groan and swear and I can tell she's expecting the worst. Me too.

Then I read it's someone named Will Fuller.

And I have this perplexed look and she asks who it is.. and i tell her i haven't a clue.

I read rivals and scout and start smiling.

She asks why I'm smiling.

I say because ND got him and we can go out and get someone much better.

Or no one at all, for that matter.

We're keeping the best of the class, the cream... the kids with warrior hearts, committed to penn state. committed to their teammates... committed. Class kids.

Anyone who isn't part of our Spartan group of 300 is else is free to go.. God bless.

I'll check back with this guy in a few weeks and see how he likes his coffee black.

And they don't think karma is gonna get them for telling a kid to injure himself on twitter?

Bill O'Brien's demeanor and poise during the Big Ten media sessions impressed me greatly. His young men are going to need that kind of self-possessed leadership to get them through the next few years.

I'm planning on supporting the Penn State players and fans when they come to Columbus, since it seems evident to me that there are plenty of morons who will be subjecting them to a barrage of verbal abuse. (Under normal circumstances there's no way I'd go out of my way to make Penn State fans feel welcome, but these are hardly normal circumstances.)

A well reasoned post that rises above the vitriol that is endemic on this board.

WTF?

Why do you support child rape?

Saw this in Peter King's MMQB article. Not exactly the same, but close enough to be pertinent in discussions regarding the PSU faithful:

Andy Reid learned something valuable from his sons' jail terms -- particularly Britt's. He learned there are three phases that inmates who are successful in avoiding a return trip to jail go through. Phase one is blaming everyone else. Phase two is admitting that it's your own fault. Phase three is the vow to yourself that you hate jail, that you're going to avoid the behavior that got you in jail in the first place, and you'll never return.

In reading some of the BWI threads, it seems as though the majority of their fans (at least the ones who post on BWI) are still mired in phase one......

When the fans and students hold a vigil for the victims and admit to the world and themselves that what Joe Paterno did was reprehensible. I'd love to see the Student Government stand up to Franco and other apologists. Until they see reality,,,why encourage their refusal to see the light?
