Football "Cult" Culture at other DI schools Reply

Why do I feel like nobody has mentioned the fact that there is a similar atmosphere at Penn State as there is at many big time programs throughout the country. Michigan, Ohio State, USC, ND to name a few. Michigan, OSU, and ND all "worship" and revere past coaches (Bo, Woody, Ara, Knute Rockne, etc.). Bama still worships Bear Bryant, and Wisconsin has a Barry Alvarez statue if i'm not mistaken. Just seems very ridiculous that fans of other schools shame us for placing football on a pedestal.

omgz every other football program is a cult.

Shower. Boys. Rape. Paterno fiefdom. Cover Up.

Are the differences really that hard for them to see?

The biggest difference (outside of the unbelievably heinous nature of the crime and cover up) is the fiefdom. No matter how crazy fans are at other schools and no matter how popular the head coach, they don't have the power to cover up things 1/100th this bad.

The Penn State cult gave full control over to dear leader Paterno, who turned out to be morally bankrupt in the extreme, and now they are reaping the consequences.

What is interesting to me is the mixture of circumstances that led to the extreme cultism of their fan base in particular compared with other programs with fanatical fans. Small town? Longevity of coach? Success on the field? Lack of success in the Big Ten (which galvanized their "us versus the world" cult mentality)? Singular focus on breaking a record? Who knows when or why the cult mentality first took hold, but it is amazing how big it eventually got- big enough to consume the entire university, obviously.

WOW. PSU loses 10 starters on offense. Recruits, pay attention

LT - Barham gone
LG - Troutman gone
OC - Stank back
RG - Panell gone
RT - Okoli gone
TE - Haplea gone
WR - Moye gone
WR - Brown gone
WR(slot) Smith gone
TB - Redd gone
FB - Suhey gone
QB - McGloin back

Watch and see what OB can do with 10 of 12 starters gone and then imagine what he can do in the future!

Ah, yes. The vaunted Stank-McGroin Offense. To be fair, what 18 year-old doesn't want to get some of that?

Bill O'Brien's demeanor and poise during the Big Ten media sessions impressed me greatly. His young men are going to need that kind of self-possessed leadership to get them through the next few years.

I'm planning on supporting the Penn State players and fans when they come to Columbus, since it seems evident to me that there are plenty of morons who will be subjecting them to a barrage of verbal abuse. (Under normal circumstances there's no way I'd go out of my way to make Penn State fans feel welcome, but these are hardly normal circumstances.)

I think we should ignore them, act like they don't exist.

Well, JoePed's players have spoken. We can all shut up now because a bunch of guys with Parks & Recreation degrees have done our thinking for us.

Here's an absolutely perfect response to them in the comment section.

Here's a letter to these players:
As a State College resident who never played football for Joe Paterno but dealt with him on a regular basis, I completely agree with the portrayal of Paterno in the Freeh report. If you didn't play for PSU or in some way support the program, Paterno treated you like dirt. As players you didn't know Joe; you knew the celebrity coach and idolized him which is exactly how he wanted to be treated. There were findings in the report that showed that your coach knew more, and in fact perjured himself. The argument that he's not here to defend himself is laughable, considering he lied up until the day he died. Please accept that he is not who you thought he was and move on so that you can begin the healing process of your own.

Throughout this entire scandal, the Paterno family, former players and several PSU loyalists have denied the fact that joe knew anything, stating simply that Sandusky was a monster who fooled them all. The thought that perhaps dear old Joe could've also been a monster who fooled a lot of people is completely out of the realm of possibility for them.

There is a tradition, at least the school I attend, that whenever a visiting team is being introduced, we turn our back. Think that would be perfect for a big 10 school, especially the student section, does that to PSU.

I don't know why these players think that somehow their opinion is supposed to change everything. There is something to the notion of being too close to something or someone to judge it objectively. I've never bought into this whole b.s. about how you can't judge someone because you've never met them. If that person is a public figure, they can be judged: often times better when personal relationships aren't present to cloud and bias judgement.

St. Joe wasn't the benevolent King that he liked to portray himself as. It seems like a lot of people who were close--but not too close--to Joe and knew the real Joe couldn't wait to toss his dying carcass into the river. Shit on people for forty years and don't expect them to come to your defense--his pathetic little Praetorian Guard of former players be damned.
