Penn State Cult (Joe Knew)

Please please let this happen:

-NCAA grants appeal

-BOT has no grounds to take this to court since appeal was granted

-Emmert personally shows up in Happy Valley (think POTUS flying into Middle East warzone middle of the night, not announced until he has left type visit)

-He hands the BOT a four year death penalty sanction and says 'If this isn't approved by majority vote and accepted, than EVERYTHING is on the table as far as punishment after the NCAA, Dept. of Ed, FBI, IRS, DEA, CIA, B1G, Happy Valley Library Overdue Books Enforcement, etc complete their investigations.

Is there anything to stop PSU from going completely off the rails and dropping out of the NCAA? Is there a legally binding agreement that PSU must remain a member?

They can keep the $60 million, offer as many scholarships as they want, pay players whatever they want, and then spend the season hosting games against non-NCAA programs and NCAA programs that are desperate enough for a paycheck. (You know...their old pre-B1G schedule..)

I don't know, but I am sure the NCAA can offer plenty of motivation for teams in the NCAA to not play them.

So.. the death penalty then.

Alabama self reported the text book scandal and vacated wins because of it.
No postseason ban though.

And again, it depends on the volation.

Absolutely true.

I remember running into a 'bama fan right after the text book thing and I agreed with him that 'bama had been on the up-and-up about self-reporting (in spite of the fact that he was a total douche about tat-gate).

It wasn't long after that... Trent Richardson gets pulled over while driving an Escalade with 22s.

As you said... depends on the violation. The bottom line though is that 'bama cheats and gets away with it (so far anyway).

Cheating is acceptable until you get caught.
And even then, you blame your rival.
It is acceptable, because it produces wins.

An actual crime (murder, rape) is completely different.
And most fan bases here would revolt against the criminal.

Exactly

As much as we say that Pennsylvania is Philly and Pittsburgh with Alabama in between; that is fair neither to Alabama nor to most of Pennsylvania. State College is a special case that is demonstrably worse than Alabama and worse than anything else in Pennsylvania, which shouldn't be placed in the same category.

Yeah, but PSU is just crazy enough to believe that the allure of visiting Happy Valley would make it worth it. Let's let them find out the hard way.

The NCAA would then kick out every single program they had, and no NCAA team would be allowed to play them. They would no longer have any tv contracts since those are done by conference, and they certainly would be kicked out of the B10. It would destroy their entire athletic department.

I have no idea what these trustees are thinking. They are pretty much begging for the 4 year death penalty to be put back on the table, and they would still be at the mercy of the NCAA. They would essentially get 1 more year of football and then a 4 year death penalty. Idiots.

How many faculty they have?

That didn't graduate from Penn State or play for Paterno?

2 or 3.

Hundreds of millions of them, and they all start with $$$.

Speaking of which I found this gem in the comments section of the CBSports article discussing the relaxed transfer rules for PSU...

The hell with the NCAA. Penn State should have rammed it to the NCAA starting last November. PSU would have run the risk of being kicked out of the NCAA, but that would have been a blessing for PSU and in line with its independent roots. The NCAA is the most hypocritical organization on the face of the earth.

That 'blessing' would be a death penalty for all intents and purposes.

Playing the bulk of your schedule against Saint Xavier (Iillinois), Georgetown (Kentucky), Northwestern (Iowa), Carroll (Montana), Marian (Indiana) & MidAmerica Nazarene isn't going to pack Beaver Stadium game after game.

(FWIW NAIA teams can only hand out 24 scholarships max)

It seems the inmates are officially running the asylum. You know what to do Mr. Mitchell. You know what to do.
