Penn State just doesn't get it. Neither did Joe Paterno; and if we are to believe his "voice from the grave" letter released this week by his family, he apparently never got it at any point - while he was alive or dead.
This isn't about Penn State, as much as the behavior of its executives (or lack thereof) allegedly aided in enabling a sexual predator. This isn't about JoPa, and how his gutless lack of action allegedly enabled the ongoing rape of young boys. This isn't even about Sandusky, the monster.
This is about the many young children whose innocence was stolen, whose childhoods were destroyed.
It would be nice if the verbal diarrhea leaving all points central Pennsylvania was simply about crisis mode...about the shallow protection of one's assets after truly egregious behavior and ahead of the inevitable civil action. But it's more culturally corrupt than that.
Penn State still doesn't get it - and no number of Hail State's, no amount of churlish fundraising, will change that; or hide its ugly face.
As for college football's "winningest" coach. at no point in Paterno's message from beyond did he truly express one iota of concern about the damage that was done under his watch. Instead, the energy of his words was spent protecting HIS legacy. About protecting HIS players.
