Penn State Cult (Joe Knew)

They're making fun of *ichigan for doing a "Maize Out" this year. Someone else points out that Rutgers this year and Ohio State in the past has done a "Scarlet Out", and Ohio State is doing a "Black Out" this weekend.

Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.

I wonder what they would say if someone posted this?

Winnipeg White Out
VIEW SOURCE
The Winnipeg White Out is a hockey tradition that dates back to 1987 when hockey fans in Winnipeg were asked to wear white clothing to home playoff games in Winnipeg, creating a very intimidating effect and atmosphere. It was created as a response to the "C of Red" created by fans of the Calgary Flames, whom the home town Winnipeg Jets were facing in the first round of the 1987 Stanley Cup Playoffs. The Jets eliminated the Flames in four games, and fans wore white for every home playoff game thereafter. Fans coined it the "White Out". Marketing for the team during the playoff referred to the "charge of the white brigade". When the Jets moved to Phoenix as the Coyotes, fans quickly embraced the "Whiteout" tradition for playoff games. Part of the marketing for this event at games included the modified lyrics ("Everybody wear white tonight") to Wang Chung's song "Everybody Have Fun Tonight".

It sounds like the idea wasn't even Winnipeg's, but was Calgary's. (I'm guessing it wasn't even Calgary's, either.)

Joesus came up with the idea back in the 60's. He let the hockey teams try it out first, to see if it was worth doing at PSU or not.

Literally everything they do is copied. White out, Paternoville, White Stripes. Everything they think is theirs is from somebody else.

“One of the guys that you are competing with is kind of disqualified for two reasons,” Franklin said. “Number one, his testing numbers were awful. He ran 5.49 in the 40, broad jump 7-foot-10. Not what we’re looking for, but on top of that we found out he is ineligible. He has no eligibility left. Chad Powers: you’re ineligible. Come on up.”

I believe I've seen people bring it up before and they pivot to "we perfected it" or "we made it popular."

Anecdotally, we used to do *color*outs in high school in the late 90s, years before Penn State did a white out.

I'll have to see if I can find it again, but one of their official publications had an article explaining how PSU's cheerleaders came up with the whole "We Are" cheer after seeing USC's version AND Our very own OH! - IO! call and response cheer.

That's interesting. Everything I've ever read by those blokes was the "we refuse to play where race is an issue" story.
