Penn State Cult (Joe Knew)

Ped Aggy just got Sanduskied. Governor just announced a 30% reduction in funding for next year.

Not that I agree with this shit, or that a 3.5% decline in state revenues should result in a 30% cut to higher education (shades of George Voinovich), but if any B10 school deserves it.

meh... the ones that needed to be removed are gone... Just as I don't like punishing kids that had nothing to do with NCAA violations, I don't want to see the rest of Penn State punished for the mistakes of a few.

I think the last few months have proven fairly well that the problem in Pedo Valley was more than the stereotypical "few bad apples." The problem was an isolated cult-like mentality that worshiped an 85 year old fraud like a God and pervaded that university from top to bottom resulting in a lack of institutional control over the football program and the football coach that made SMU look like child's play.

Well, that's the things about bad apples when you leave them in the bin with otherwise good apples for sixty+ years--all the apples go bad.

Kind of like saying all Muslims are terrorists because some of them are. I know a lot of Penn State fans that are just as disgusted with what went on as we are. They just don't post their feelings on the internet. The only people you hearing from on PSU's message boards are the outspoken hardcore fanatics. Only a handful of Penn State's total fanbase. One of my best friends is a Penn State alumni... he looked physically sick for a few days after the Sandusky shit came out but was in favor of Paterno on down being dismissed immediately. There are many more Penn State fans like that than there are defending Paterno. I think 99% of the people that were involved in the cover-up are gone and are never coming back. If the same thing happened on Woody's watch you would have seen a lot of tOSU fans defending him to no end as well.

Woody would have marched straight to Sandusky's office and thrown him out of the building.

Coach Hayes was as flawed as the rest of us in his way but there is zero chance he would have washed his hands of something like this happening on his watch by passing it up the chain.

I know you were just making an analogy (and one that is certainly valid regarding fan bases) but I felt that clarification was in order. :)

More like saying most of the people in Jonestown were batshit crazy because their actions support that conclusion. Sure, there were a few who fought against drinking the flavor-aid and were subsequently killed, but the overwhelming majority were all in until the end.

Same goes for Joestown.

Thank God that never happened.

Sure, and you also had a lot demanding that he be fired....which he was. The same thing happened over JT. He had his blind supporters, those who felt he should have been immediately fired and a diverse range of opinions between the two. In other words, the Ohio State community had an honest, heartfelt discussion/argument about those coaches and what should happen to them. Both of whom were fired in the end, proving that however popular and powerful a football coach might become at Ohio State, he doesn't drive the bus.

That in no way corresponds to the cult-like veneration of JoePed at PSU, his dominance of the university hierarchy up to the level of forcing out university vice presidents who tried to interfere in "his" program and walking out on a President who was trying to fire him in 2004.

Apples and Oranges.

It is hard to believe that anyone who knew Woody Hayes, even casually, would believe that he would have covered something like this up. It is unthinkable.

More likely, Hayes would had trouble controlling himself from ripping Sandusky apart with his bare hands.

I agree that's probably what would have happened but I would have said the same thing about Paterno before it all came out that he didn't. Let's face it... most of us thought Paterno was one of the good guys last year. A little kooky but still one of the good guys.

As I said, I know more Penn State fans that were for the firing of Paterno than were against it. I'd like to believe that ratio goes across all of Penn State's fanbase. Everything you said in the above paragraph applies the the Penn State situation as well. There are blind followers, (the ones you see posting on the Penn State boards.) The ones who thought he should be fired immediately. And people who didn't know what to think. In the end Paterno was fired. (He didn't drive the bus.)

If you want to see proof of what I am saying... go over to the FoxSports Penn State page. Before the news broke about the Sandusky shit, there were hundreds of people that posted there. After the news hit. There were about 5 people that were defending Paterno. There were not very many other people posting at all other than that. And trust me Paterno was getting hammered on there daily.

For the record... if you look back at some of my posts, I was all for the firing and prosecution of Paterno and everyone else involved. He may have done what he was legally required to do... but didn't do what was right by those kids.
