OSU Wrestling (2008 and 2009 NCAA Runners-up)

I work with Oregon State Hall of Famer & NCAA Champion Larry Bielenberg. Last year about this time, Larry came up and congratulated me (he's a HUGE Oregon State, Pac-10, and wrestling fan). I asked him, "For what?" He then went on to tell me all about what the Buckeyes did in the NCAAs. Ever since then my interest has been piqued. It's also been neat to see him get excited about the Buckeyes in this fashion. There are so many wrestling programs going the way of the dodo that Larry's glad to see some schools (in this case, tOSU) doing it right that he stays tuned.

Long story short, keep it up Buckeyes!!! You're making fans among those who never would have been before.

After the 1st round of the NCAA Championships, 5 Buckeyes have advanced. Humphrey (133) with a 12 second Fall; Jaggers (141), major decision; Palmer (149), Fall; Sponsellor (165), decision; and Pucillo (184), Tech Fall. Each of these guys has the potential to go deep into the tournament. Triggas (125), Johnstone (157), Rella (174), and Morrison (HWT) fell to the consolation bracket; but these guys, too, have the potential to score points for the Bucks.

Does this leave them in shape to match/improve/lessen their performance last year?

Too soon to tell. Iowa, ranked #1 by a substantial margin, will be very tough to beat. Cornell, ranked #2, lost one of their #1 seeds in the first round, so they may slip. Iowa State, ranked #3, got 8 or 9 through the first round, and they are on a roll. If anyone can challenge Iowa, it's probably them. Not sure whether we'll match last year's finish, but if we wrestle well, a top 5 finish is well within reach.

Consecutive top 5 finishes would be magnificent. Thanks for the info.

NCAA Wrestling Championships: Ohio State's Mike Pucillo wins easily in first match
by Pat Galbincea / Plain Dealer Reporter
Thursday March 19, 2009, 4:09 PM

ST. LOUIS -- Ohio State junior and returning national champion Mike Pucillo (184) showed strong hip movement and lightweight moves in producing one of the few technical falls in the NCAA Wrestling Championships today when he waltzed to a 17-2 technical fall in 4:54 over Matt Gevelinger of Brown in 4:54.

OSU did suffer a blow when heavyweight Corey Morrison was taken down in overtime by Justin Dobies of North Carolina -- a former Plain Dealer All-Star from Garfield Heights -- and lost a 3-1 decision.

The Buckeyes are in third place in the team standings after one round of pigtails and the first round with 17 1/2 points. Iowa State has a 25-22 lead on Iowa in the race for first place. Cleveland State's lone NCAA representative, senior heavyweight Rashard Goff, rode Indiana's Nathan Everhart well with a deep waist and went on to win a 4-1 decision.

Wow!! The Buckeyes are rocking the second round of the NCAA Championships!

All 5 in the championship bracket won tonight. That is HUGE at this stage of the tournament. I have not seen the latest team standings, but we have surely made gains on Iowa and Iowa State. Both of them lost wrestlers in this round.

Humphrey (133 - #2 seed) by major decision - he is on fire!

Jaggers (141, #3 seed) by decision, to set up a showdown with #6 seed Nick Gallick from IA state (the 1, 2, and 4 seeds have lost), J could be on track to the finals if he stays hot.

Palmer (149 - #4 seed) by decision, to set up his re-match with #5 Kyle Ruschell from Wisconsin.

Sponsellor (165 - #6 seed) by decision, to set up a HUGE match with #3 seed Ryan Morningstar of Iowa.

Pucillo (184 - #3 seed) by decision; is advancing toward a HUGE showdown with #2 Phil Keddy of Iowa.

In the consolation bracket, Nikko Triggas (125) won by Fall to advance and earn a bonus point; Jason Johnstone won his pigtail match to earn a point, but lost in the next round (done for the tournament); Dave Rella (174) won by major decision to advance and earn a bonus point. [With apologies to Corey Morrison, who has yet to wrestle, I've got to check out for the evening.]

Folks - last year's #2 finish was historic. I don't want to jinx anybody, and I'm knocking on wood, but the way these guys have attacked today, this year might be just a tad historic as well.

I'm still trying to understand how they do so well at the NCAA but not at the Big 10 tournament:confused:

Because the Big Ten is the "Best of the Best." Literally, it gets easier at NCAA's against "inferior" competition. Same as in the NCAA tournament. I heard Bob Huggins on the radio yesterday, and was talking about how for West Virginia the NCAA's would be easier to win than who they would have had to beat to win the Big East, and he's right!

Peace.

Oh, and by the way, this team is clicking at the right time.

Top Dog? It could happen.

Team scores after the first day:

Iowa and Iowa State are tied for 1st with 33 points. Buckeyes are 3rd with 30 points. Next is Nebraska with 24. So, it looks like it will be a three team race for the championship. The Iowas will still be tough to beat, but we've got some head-to-head matches with them coming up today. Those matches are likely to tell the tale of this tournament.

GO BUCKS!!

Per a poster on the O-Zone, the Bucks are off to a great start today, with Palmer, Jaggers, and Humphrey all having won their quarterfinals matches today.

Additionally, Jaggers pinned his man (#6 seed), and Triggas also won in the consolation bracket. No word on whether Pucillo or Sponseller have had their matches yet.

Update: For the time being, we have passed Iowa in the team standings. Sponseller is currently up against Iowa's Morningstar - track the match here: Link.

Update 2: Sponseller loses in OT. Damn.
