OSU Wrestling (2008 and 2009 NCAA Runners-up)

FYI, there are now a couple of vBets in this forum for the Big Ten Tourney this weekend. You can wager on where the team will place, and on any of the individual wrestlers winning a conference title.

Six OSU wrestlers in NCAA Tournament

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH
Sixth-ranked Ohio State entered the Big Ten wrestling tournament with high hopes, but early-round struggles kept it from reaching its goals. The Buckeyes finished sixth yesterday and did not have an individual champion. Top-ranked Iowa won the tournament.
"There are a lot of kids on this bus on edge," Ohio State coach Tom Ryan said. "We underperformed. Fortunately, it wasn't the last event of the year. We'll put our practice in and go to St. Louis and hopefully repeat what we did last year," when OSU was national runner-up.
Six Ohio State wrestlers received automatic bids to the NCAA Tournament next week.
Reece Humphrey finished second at 133 pounds, losing to Michigan State's Franklin Gomez 7-4 in double overtime. J Jaggers (141) and Mike Pucillo (184) finished third as did Lance Palmer (149). Colt Sponseller was fourth at 165 and Dave Rella was fifth at 174.
"The six guys that are going to nationals did a good job," Ryan said. "We lost some matches that we can hopefully overturn (in St. Louis), some good, tough overtimes matches."

Well, from what the national rankings (teamwise) go, it looks like the B10 is the 'top dog' conference. While the Buckeyes didn't show great, they showed well. Maybe the breaks come later on the national stage, and some of the other teams knock out some of the other B10ers.

Probably the most intense six minutes in sport, any sport. go Bucks!

Not a good Big10 tournament for the Buckeyes, by any stretch. Not a single champion, and only one finalist.

That being said, the Big 10 tournament isn't all that important. It determines seeds and automatic qualifiers, but every single one of the wrestlers who qualified for nationals could go out and win their weight. I still feel we have 5 shots at titles if someone gets hot and wrestles well: 133, 141, 149, 165, and 184. And while Pucillo losing to Keddy definitely isn't a good thing, it was in two tiebreakers, and it does mean that Herbert still has not wrestled him yet, which could end up being a positive if they were to meet up in the finals of the national tournament. J Jaggers had an excellent tournament, losing only one match to eventual runner-up Zach Tannelli 3-1, Palmer lost a match he probably shouldn't have but then battled back to beat two excellent wrestlers in Patascil and Ruschell, and Sponseller's loss to Morningstar was 2-1 because of the second tiebreaker and there is no reason to think that he couldn't beat him if they wrestled again.

At-large bids come out on Wednesday, would think that at least Johnstone will get one and wouldn't be at all suprised if Triggas did as well. Could at least keep us in the hunt for a team title at nationals, although its definitely a long shot.

Big Ten wasn't a great tournament for the Bucks.

Team scoring works funny in wrestling. Last year we were so-so as a dual-meet team; but we were second in the NCAA Tournament. This year we were a very good dual-meet team (2nd in Big Ten), but only so-so in the championship tournament.

Would not be at all surprised if we finished higher at Nationals than we did at the Big Ten. Five of our six automatic qualifiers have the potential to go deep into the placing (ie, All-American or better), and Nicko Triggas and Jason Johnstone have a good chance at at-large bids and could well earn points.

After watching the Big 10 tournament, it seems that Wisconsin is loaded for next year. I believe they have 4 or 5 freshmen who wrestled in finals. Plus, Iowa will be up there again. I understand what you guys mean about the fact that we might place better at the NCAA's but aren't the guys who won the Big 10 tournament championships going to be there:huh: I guess that's why I don't understand about how you could finish in the middle of the Big 10 tournament and then make a strong run at the NCAA's. I am somewhat

Because we did it last year. If some of our guys get hot, and have a break or 2 go their way, we'll be all right.

I think it is more than that. I think it has to do with the seedings somehow. I really don't think you get "hot" in wrestling like you do in basketball or some other sports. I could be wrong but I just think there is more to a wrestling tournament when it comes to champions.

Nikko Triggas (125), Jason Johnstone (157), and Corey Morrison (HWT) were awarded at-large bids for the NCAA Championships. Added to our six automatic qualifiers, that means we've got every weight class filled but one. Not bad.

Awesome news in getting 9 qualified for the NCAA's. Hopefully the guys can get on a hot streak. Having had two National Champs come from sort of out of nowhere last year should be motivation to all of the guys that if they get hot and on a roll, the skies the limit. Good Luck, go get em Grapplers.

Wrestling: Coach's passion ... make Buckeyes great
Tuesday, March 17, 2009 2:53 AM
By Jeremy McLaughlin

Ohio State senior wrestler J Jaggers was a member of a committee that three years ago picked the next Buckeyes wrestling coach. There were quality candidates for the job. Each had noteworthy credentials and a history of recruiting top-tier talent.

When Tom Ryan made his pitch, the passion in his voice caught Jaggers' attention.

"The way he was talking about where he wanted to take this program, you know he'd pull out all the stops and do anything in his power, even if it meant never sleeping, to get us where we needed to be," Jaggers said.
Ryan, who was hired from Hofstra, has done that in short order. He has recruited top high school wrestlers, particularly from talent-rich
northeastern Ohio. Jaggers and Mike Pucillo won national championships last season. The Buckeyes were the 2008 national runner-up, their best finish ever.

Sixth-ranked Ohio State returns to St. Louis this week for the NCAA championships, attempting to top what it did last season. Ryan expects this to be the norm for the program. He believes the Buckeyes will win national titles.

Last season was just a start, he said.
