OSU Wrestling (2008 and 2009 NCAA Runners-up)

Monday night at Children's Hospital a number of the Ohio State wrestlers came to visit the children who were there for various medical reasons. I will speak to three who interacted with kids on the 4th floor of Children's. Mike, Zach, and Ross came to the 4th floor activity room and made the kids feel really special. They talked to the kids, played bingo, and generally took the kids away from medical issues for a couple of hours. I can tell everyone that this made the difference for a number of kids. My son who is currently hospitalized really loved this oportunity. Mike, Zach and Ross made him feel like one of the gang. You could see the children's eyes light up and smiles reflect that for this time they were special. My son talked about them all night and into the next day. At one point a young mom put her young tot on the laps of one of the wrestlers and he helped her turn the cage with the bingo numbers inside. The smile and glee on her face could melt your heart.

I can not say enough about these young men. This goes above and beyond in my book and unless I am greatly mistaken the wrestlers put their hearts into this activity.

I have sent a letter to Coach Ryan and the Columbus Dispatch to let them know that we really appreciate this act of kindness. In this day and age where negativity tends to overshadow good kids and young men and women, this needed to be said.

THANK YOU OHIO STATE ATHLETES AND COACHES.

I am sure these three are not the only ones who are involved, but I can speak first hand that it meant more than a thank you can express.

And------Go Bucks

Outstanding Post and a great story.

Peace.

Ohio State Takes Down Edinboro 19-12
By
Kevin Schlosser
(Edinboro, PA) The Ohio State wrestling team hit the road for their last dual meet of 2008 and returned home with a 19-12 victory over Edinboro. In a dual that featured multiple upsets for both teams and six different lead changes; it was the Buckeyes that won six matches to four and walked off the mat with the seven-point win.
?For the most part I think you can say that we wrestled pretty well today. We had a couple of guys win some big matches and we had a couple guys lose some matches I don?t think they should have lost,? stated OSU head coach Tom Ryan.
?In general our effort and intensity were good but we still have a lot of work to do before March.?
Edinboro got off to a good start at 125 pounds when Kyle Fluke upset Nikko Triggas 6-2 in the opening match. Reece Humphrey got the Buckeyes on the scoreboard with a 14-6 major decision over Ricky Deubel. The Fighting Scots pulled another upset at 141 when Joel Webster knocked off J. Jaggers 5-4 with a third period takedown. Webster wasn?t wrestling varsity last season; Jaggers is the defending national champion.
?Heading into the match I thought 125 and 141 pounds were very pivotal and we got both of them,? asserted Edinboro head coach Tim Flynn.
?It was a very good way to start; Fluke and Webster went for the win and they set the tone for us early.?
?At 125 and 141 pounds we had inexcusable weight cuts; it is an issue,? commented Ryan.

J. Jaggers (141 pounds) named Collegiate Athlete of the Year at the 2008 Greater Cleveland Sports Awards, beating out Buckeye football players Alex Boone and Beanie Wells.

Congrats to Jeff, and deservedly so. I know he's had a bit of a rugged start this season but he'll be back BIG time once the Big Ten Tourney and NCAA's come around. Beanie is a "great" athlete and Alex is "very good." But young Mr. Jaggers is "ELITE," his likes do not come around very often.

WRES: No. 5 Buckeyes (9-1) Defeat No. 20 Hofstra - The Ohio State Buckeyes Official Athletics Site - OhioStateBuckeyes.com

COLUMBUS, Ohio ? In a matchup of nationally ranked wrestling programs, No. 5 Ohio State defeated No. 20 Hofstra, 19-13, Sunday at the David S. Mack Sports Complex in Hempstead, N.Y. The win, in front of 2,118 fans, improved Ohio State?s record to 9-1 on the season while Hofstra drops to 7-3.

The match was close the entire way on a day that was as intriguing as it was thrilling. This was Ohio State coach Tom Ryan?s first visit back to the school he coached for 11 years and helped put on the wrestling map. Coupled with both teams being ranked among the Top 20 teams in the country and with Ryan speaking at a $100 a plate pre-match brunch to raise funds for a new Hofstra wrestling facility to be named after his late son, Teague, the atmosphere was super-charged with the home-standing Pride seeking a major upset on their home floor.

In addition, the Buckeyes recognized more than 40 alumni at halftime of the meet and Luke Fickell, Ohio State football co-defensive coordinator, served as the honorary captain. Fickell was a three-time Ohio high school state champion while wrestling at Columbus? DeSales High School.

I don't know if Reece Humphrey is hurt or what, but he didn't wrestle yesterday. Reece is still undefeated on the season, and is the #1 ranked 133 lb wrestler in the country. Hopefully he will be back for Minnesota Sunday.

Wrestling: Unexpected loss for Ohio State
Minnesota rallies after trailing by 10
Monday, February 2, 2009 3:04 AM
By Jeremy McLaughlin

Ohio State can usually count on victories from five wrestlers in every dual match. If those five "studs," as coach Tom Ryan calls them, win, most likely the Buckeyes win. Ohio State had lost once in 11 duals before yesterday.

But if one or two of their stars lose, the Buckeyes need someone else to win to carry them to a team victory. Only one -- Dave Rella at 174 pounds -- did yesterday. It wasn't enough. No. 10 Minnesota defeated No. 5 Ohio State 18-16 before a crowd of 1,273 in Value City Arena.

The elated feeling Ohio State had an hour into the match when it led 16-6 quickly changed to frustration.

"We can't have all the pressure on five main guys," 149-pound junior Lance Palmer said. "Reece (Humphrey) just made a good point of that in the locker room. There are 10 guys on the team. It's not four or five guys that should be carrying the whole team throughout the season."

Palmer did his part. He had a dominating victory. So did Colt Sponseller (165) and defending national champion Mike Pucillo (184). Those wins were expected. Each is ranked in the top five nationally.

J Jaggers (141), another defending champion, and Humphrey (133) are the two other wrestlers who typically win, but both lost yesterday. Humphrey, the top-ranked wrestler in his class, suffered his first loss this season, a 5-0 decision in the final match when the Buckeyes led by a point.

Continued

Hard to believe that both Humphrey and Jaggers both lost. Humphrey loss came in the final match which gave Minnesota the victory but other guys lost who should not have.

WR: Pin by Triggas Jumpstarts No. 6 Buckeyes to 26-17 Win over No. 17 Michigan - The Ohio State Buckeyes Official Athletics Site - OhioStateBuckeyes.com

COLUMBUS, Ohio ? Since dropping a heartbreaking match to Minnesota Feb. 1, the sixth-ranked Ohio State wrestling team has won three-consecutive matches in impressive fashion, including a 26-17 win against No. 17 Michigan in Cliff Keen Arena in Ann Arbor, Friday.

The Buckeyes, who now move to 13-2 overall and 4-1 in the Big Ten, were spurred by a match-changing pin by sophomore Nikko Triggas at 125 pounds. The unranked Triggas, who hails from Moraga, Calif., pinned No. 17 Michael Watts in 2:02 to give the Scarlet and Gray its first lead of the match at 17-14 with just three bouts remaining. It was Triggas? team-leading 11th pin of the season.
