OSU Men's Basketball Recruiting/Projections/General Discussions

boom.gif

Looking at the stats for last season:

Cedric Russell: https://www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/player/_/id/4280257/cedric-russell

Duane Washington: https://www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/player/_/id/4397235/duane-washington-jr

They were very similar, Washington only had 2.9 assists per game (to Russel's 1.2).

Regardless, (I trust the coach on his decision to get Russel) it was a very good pick up especially for this late date.

Yeah, seems to be a pure shooter/scorer and doesn't create for teammates or play defense. I'm glad OSU is getting him, but I wouldn't call him a combo guard as he seems to be just a shorter SG.

Let Jamari Wheeler guard the other team's best shooting guard. Cedric Russel is capable of getting hot and scoring in bunches, similar to the way Washington was.

Hey, picking him up should (at least) bump the Buckeyes back in the preseason top 10.

Ohio State basketball targets at major shoe company events

July 13, 2021

Ohio State coach Chris Holtmann and his assistants, Ryan Pedon, Jake Diebler and Tony Skinn, will be out at all of these major events and likely also at other travel tournaments scheduled this weekend.

The Buckeyes have three commitments for the 2022 class with Georgia point guard Bruce Thornton (ranked 23rd nationally), New York shooting guard Roddy Gayle (ranked 46th) and Ohio shooting guard Bowen Hardman (ranked 201st). That class is currently ranked No. 2 nationally.

OSU is hoping to add one or two post players in this cycle. Some of those targets include Florida’s Jarace Walker (ranked 11th overall nationally), South Carolina’s Julian Phillips (ranked 25th), Florida’s Dillon Mitchell (ranked 30th), Massachusetts’ Kyle Filipowski (ranked 33rd), Illinois’ A.J. Casey (ranked 35th), Tennessee’s Felix Okpara (ranked 47th), Maryland’s Favour Aire (ranked 70th) and Missouri’s Tarris Reed (ranked 71st).

The Buckeyes are also tracking any number of 2023 prospects as well. OSU has offers already pending to five Ohio players in 2023 in guards Rayvon Griffith, Lawrent Rice and Gabe Cupps, forward Dailyn Swain and center Austin Parks. OSU also offered Kentucky guard Reed Sheppard after seeing him in person this past weekend at an adidas event.

Ohio State basketball has continued to run the ranks of the 2022 recruiting class, currently with the top-rated group in the country and looking to add more pieces.

One name that has gone slightly under the radar because he is not as big of a name as some others the Buckeyes have targeted is center Patrick Wessler. Wessler is a three-star recruit out of the impressive Combine Academy in Charlotte, North Carolina. He stands at 7-foot and 235 pounds as just a high school junior.

Even though Wessler is not a four of five-star recruit — though he could get that fourth star before his recruitment is over — the seven-footer would be a huge get for Chris Holtmann and company, and could make an immediate impact for the Buckeyes.

Wessler is currently listed as the No. 199 player in the 2022 recruiting class, according to 247Sports. He is also listed as the No. 29 center in the country and the No. 4 player in the state of North Carolina. Wessler had garnered a lot of interest over the past year, holding offers from Cincinnati, West Virginia, Virginia Tech, South Florida, Wake Forest, Mercer, Elon, East Carolina, Iowa, USC, Ole Miss, NC State, Providence, Creighton, and obviously Ohio State, among others.
