OSU Men's Basketball Recruiting/Projections/General Discussions

The only thing I can figure is the staff already knows Brunk ain't happening.

We are in a position where we need a back-up big who can contribute right away in some fashion and you are going to have an extremely tough time convincing a good grad transfer big to come here and watch Kaleb play 25-30 mpg every game. So if we're out of it for Brunk, the staff decided to kick the tires on Giddens since he is long and athletic and has high-major/B1G/OSU (lol) experience. Apparently there is mutual interest so now a visit is happening.

I don't think this really says anything about Diallo because I think Diallo should RS, anyways, because he is THAT raw and for class balance purposes. Be kind of hilarious if we did end up with two seniors next season, both of which started their careers at OSU but one of which took a three-year detour to Bama and the SEC.

have you thought about the possibility that the staff huffs paint?
I am not saying this in relation to Brunk or anyone in particular - OK, you got me, it is about recruiting Morris Udeze  - but sometimes I get the sense that CH likes to have a lot of recruiting lines cast in the lake so to speak to give themselves options in case of necessity. They tend to get linked with many marginal prospects more often than OSU used to under Matta. Part of that is I feel like CH plans to build depth and use all of his scholarships in one way or another (more sit out transfer years and redshirts possibly), while Matta didn't really want to build the bench down to the 11th and 12th guy so long as he had a strong top-6 or 7, and naturally the guys at the end of the bench are going to be more marginal. As long as they aren't really trying to reel those marginal guys in for being starters and are just putting themselves in position in case a need for depth arises, then it is fine. Also, I believe CH recognizes one way for him to be able to steal some wins until the roster is where he wants it to be in terms of top talent will be by having a versatile roster with guys he can mix and match from game to game and in certain in-game situations.

I know we dont like some aspects of Giddens's game, but at the same time we also have to be realistic. There don't tend to be any very good options in the grad transfer market for a school like OSU that will actually improve the team. Most everyone who is a grad transfer, including Brunk, will be overestimated based on schools being desperate to add players that are seemingly a sure thing. I feel like the appropriate default belief of fans should be that grad transfers can only be expected to be replacement level players that do not improve your team. But we all know fans expect big things from all grad transfers, and are routinely disappointed.

If by chance Giddens joins the team again, it will be to be a backup center, maybe to play 12-15 minutes a game, and most certainly he is a high major player body- and athleticism-wise. Backup center grad transfer is not a role that is going to make or break this year's team. I feel like he was underused at Alabama, especially last year, so he will probably be the rare grad transfer that actually improves his stats in his fifth year.

Well there isn't really anywhere to go but up with his stats last season.
