OSU Men's Basketball Recruiting/Projections/General Discussions

Which also weren't great
Yeah, he didnt put up huge numbers for any season, but at the same time we have to be realistic about the options this time of year. OSU isn't going to get a Reid Travis to grad transfer this year or any year. Generally, for a program the level of OSU, there are mostly just marginal rotation players in the grad transfer market. Giddens is as good am option as they could possibly get, IMO.

As far as Giddens and/or Diallo goes... I don't know, I think it would be a good idea to have a back-up big so that we have some other option with size to play down low when Kaleb comes out. I think Giddens helps more next season than Diallo does (which is not saying much). Not sure if I want Diallo long-term but a guy like Giddens is only here one year and we have a couple scholarships available so it doesn't really have much of a cost associated with it, don't think our other forwards are gonna care too much if they are not getting center minutes because of Giddens (but they will get those minutes if Giddens simply isn't good enough).
For the most part, I agree with you but if Gidden does come here I think we should continue to pursue Diallo because who are we going to have to backup Wesson when he is a senior and what happens when he graduates. I guess that is one reason I might take a look at Hugley from Brush if Diallo does not come here. I do not know maybe there are some other big man that are juniors in high school that Holtmann is in on.

My basic point is that you had two plus recruiters on your staff with Schrage and Pedon and I think that is important to maintain, especially in the current recruiting climate. And if it's someone that can help with our player development (and maybe offensive execution, not 100% sold on Pedon on that front and Holtmann/Johnson are much more about defense), so much the better.

I will try to clarify myself as fully as I can and I promise this is my final word on this:

If we promote Scoonie or Netti I'm not going to be mad or anything. I just see a potential problem with the 2020 and 2021 recruiting, which are crucial cycles for this program as we continue to try to rebuild the talent level. The 2019 class is great and Schrage was instrumental in landing Carton who was instrumental in us getting Liddell, but it's a 3-man class with all 3 having potential early entry status, so I don't know how foundational it can really be for the future of the program. It's a good talent boost but we need to continue to build the talent in the next two classes, that's really important (especially when you consider how Walker, Jallow, Young, and Kaleb will all definitely be gone after the 2020 season and how probable Carton is for that timing, as well). I feel like it is pretty important to add an assistant who has been actively recruiting the 2020 and 2021 guys. You can't say that about either of Netti or Penn, at least not in a full-on assistant coach recruiting capacity.

Promoting Scoonie probably solidifies that we add Dom... but how bad does Holtmann even want Dom? I would have thought if we were pushing for Dom he'd already be committed by now. I guess if Scoonie gets promoted then we will push for Dom and Scoonie will be the lead recruitier, lol. I do think Scoonie could eventually pan out as a good recruiter but I think the earliest possible that could materialize would be the 2021 class, as there is not a lot of time for Scoonie to build relationships with the 2020 guys. Same thing for Netti, and unfortunately Netti does not have a T150 son to hook in. So really the 2020 class would fall almost entirely on Holtmann and Pedon. Which might be fine since it should be a smaller class... but I'd feel a lot more comfortable if there were more Ohio/Midwest guys we were in on, as this is the recruiting expertise of Holtmann and Pedon.

I don't know, we will see what happens. I kind of think we're gonna end up wanting to take at least 3 in the 2020 class but we might find ourselves struggling to get a third guy we actually want.

You forgot to mention that Schrage was the lead recruiter for Diallo so there is that in addition to everything else that you have mentioned.

However, I might be in the minority but I think that you might be selling Scoonie a little short. I think just by the nature of him having a son that is a pretty good basketball player might be a little bit of a help. I do not know how many camps Dom went to over the past couple summers but I would think that Scoonie might have met quite a few guys that also played in those camps. I do not know I am just speculating and I have no idea what types of relationships Scoonie might have made with these other players.

You talk about the Midwest quite a bit with regards to recruiting and while I agree that is probably where Ohio State gets most of their recruits I believe that Scoonie is pretty well connected to the East Coast and we have gotten some guys from the East Coast over the years. However, I think he is more well known then you are giving him credit for and you really have no idea what type of relationships he has with high school/AAU coaches.

I also do not think that just because Scoonie would become an assistant coach at Ohio State that they would be obligated to take his son. I think that would be up to Holtmann and maybe you are insinuating that it would be hard for the HC to turn down an assistant's son. Maybe, but that is something that I am sure would be discussed before an offer would even be made.

I am just like you I want the best assistant that Holtmann can get. I also think that Terry Johnson is going to have to step up to the plate along with Pedon.

I don't see any reason to believe that Scoonie would struggle to recruit. I have a hard time thinking of someone I would rather have repping OSU to recruits and their families. Now, the job of an assistant coach is extremely demanding - to perform it well takes incredible time and effort, moreso than the role he has been in. If Scoonie is willing to accept the heavy workload that comes with being an assistant, I would love for him to be in that role.
