OSU Men's Basketball Recruiting/Projections/General Discussions

People have been mentioning Seth Towns and I'm not sure why, maybe his name is in the transfer portal or something. But if he were available, man, I'd love for us to go after him. Ivy League POY who scored and rebounded and facilitated at a high level for Harvard, plus has good size and length for a college 3--when they played UK a couple seasons ago he looked like one of the best players on the floor. Shot something like 44% from 3 his last season. I think he'd be a substantial upgrade over what we have lined up at SF for next season and theoretically could be a starter for us. I'd vastly prefer him to the other SFs we are looking at like Pierce and Cylla. Plus it would be a homecoming for the Northland boy!

But I don't know if this is just a random rumor, haven't seen much reported about it.

Seth Towns would be a great add if he becomes available. I noticed he didn't log any minutes last year due to injury.

While we are speculating, What about Jordan Brown from Nevada? High recruit who got minimal time his freshman year. He will be one of two players returning to the team (!!!!!) and his coach is likely going to Arkansas. Hard to see him staying.

I am not sure why there are any Seth Towns mentions either, other than the local connection and open scholarships at OSU. I am not seeing reason for him to transfer now, nor any report of a transfer decision being made. It all seems highly speculative, wishful thinking. He has only been at Harvard for 3 years now, so unless he has been taking heavy course loads year-round, he will not be a grad transfer at this time. If I were him, I sure as hell wouldn't leave Harvard until i have a degree, because clearly he values the education. It makes no sense for him to transfer without graduating. I can see why he is attractive for OSU, but I would give it another year before saying that that particular transfer actually makes any sense for Towns.

Jordan Brown couldn't crack the regular rotation on a team in the Mountain West, which is a big step down from the B1G. Hard pass.

I really like where OSU is at in the offseason for once. For a variety of reasons, they have literally lost at least five student-athletes between the beginning of one season and the start of the following regular season in each of the past two years - 5 in 2018 and 6 in 2017. This is on top of having 4/5 of a freshman class transfer in 2015-2016. This year, it looks like they will lose three recruited scholarship players plus Joey Lane. They bring in an 8 ppg scorer off an Elite 8 team and three top-50 prospects, and are looking to continue to fortify the post depth.

Projected points lost by year:
2019: 780
2018: 1,587
2017: 1,105
2016: 317 (all from 4 freshmen)

I feel like looking at the personnel losses in the context of losing only half as much point production as the prior year, you really have to be optimistic about how CH has managed to stem the tide a bit. As of now he is looking at filling 2 scholarship vacancies, one will likely go to a grad transfer of some kind, and the other could go to a prep prospect or a conventional transfer.

I feel like it is a no-brainer for OSU to add either Giddens or Diallo, and they both individually would be guys that could help this team. The harder question is what to do with that last spot. I don't think they will add two bigs unless they intend to redshirt one. But that is one option. If they dont go the 2-big route, I would opt for adding a conventional transfer, basically whoever they can get that is the best scorer who can also play some defense.

Neither one of those guys would really help the team next season. Diallo, if he comes here, might provide some backup minutes to Wesson after next season but I do not see him really helping next season and as far as Gidden goes I guess he could come in and bang guys around next season when Wesson is in foul trouble but that is about it for him.

Regarding the third scholarship, I have no idea what you are talking. You just put it in the bank and use it in the upcoming recruiting season.
that last spot.

I honestly think if you are anti-Diallo you should be happy with Giddens. Will be better than Diallo next season and does not take future scholarships for Loveday or Hugley.
Well if Gidden does come here I will accept it but I will not be happy about it.

As far as Loveday goes, everything I am seeing is pointing him to Louisville unless you have some inside information but all of the nonpremium info is saying Louisville.
Regarding Hugley from Brush, Greater Cleveland area, he has good size but I have sort of kept my eye on him this past season and he will really need to work on his offensive game to be able to help out when Wesson is a senior. I guess he has a year more to develop so he might be a guy to keep an eye on. However, saying that, he does not even have an Ohio State verbal offer yet.

Re: Joey Brunk

IU just had their 2nd frontcourt departure of the offseason as 6'8" freshman forward Jake Forrester (#148, 2018) entered the transfer portal. 6'10 Sophomore Clifton Moore (#151, 2017) had entered the portal as well. Hoosiers are light down low.

Methinks one thing is related to the other with Brunk's interest.

I agree, I think Loveday is headed elsewhere.

As far as Giddens and/or Diallo goes... I don't know, I think it would be a good idea to have a back-up big so that we have some other option with size to play down low when Kaleb comes out. I think Giddens helps more next season than Diallo does (which is not saying much). Not sure if I want Diallo long-term but a guy like Giddens is only here one year and we have a couple scholarships available so it doesn't really have much of a cost associated with it, don't think our other forwards are gonna care too much if they are not getting center minutes because of Giddens (but they will get those minutes if Giddens simply isn't good enough).

We're probably not getting a better option than Giddens so I've come around to the idea of bringing him back if he wants to come back.

Yeah, Giddens is as good as it gets in the grad transfer market. He can bring some elements that OSU is otherwise lacking, and provide some depth at a position currently with no depth. I feel like this past season showed that Holt is a master at mixing and matching his team to give them the best chance to win games, even though they dont have star talent. Giddens could be a very useful tool to have in that toolbox, as they may still need to win with mixing and matching next year.

He averaged 1.9 ppg this season?...yikes, he better be an amazing defender.
