OSU Men's Basketball Recruiting/Projections/General Discussions

I didn't say anything about BR being a better basketball player than our other 2019 guys. But he has a very complementary skill set and brings something different to the table, something our team needs. Offensive skill and versatility.

I have now seen several scouts say (Brian Snow for one) that based on watching BR this year, he is definitely a high major player. His lack of offers at this moment are a product of timing with all the time that he missed with the ACL injury and now his stated intent that he is not going to go into the decision-making process until after his season is done. So programs are biding their time and giving themselves as much opportunity as possible to evaluate him. For the past year prior to this season, programs were not able to watch him. Also, these programs are in the process of finishing their seasons so they are probably evaluating their own needs and how their players are playing, this is how a lot of spring recruiting usually goes.

Once Roderick's season is done, he will pick up more offers, he simply has been playing too well not to. I will be shocked if he doesn't get at least a couple high major offers or offers of the Butler/Xavier/Dayton variety. As his stated goal was to wait and see if he could earn high major interest, after receiving a couple such offers I don't think he will wait too long to pick one. From interviews it is very clear that he is dying for that OSU offer. We will see if he gets it or not.

I just hope he doesn't end up at another B1G school. I keep saying that but, seriously. If it's not OSU, I hope it's somewhere not in the B1G. I don't ever want to watch him play against us. I about guarantee you he'd light it up.

Also, I understand that because of our positional needs and because of Diallo's great height and length, he's really tantalizing. But I look at it this way: what is the most likely outcome with Diallo based on similar raw projects (like Samba Kane at Illinois or David Bell here)? If Diallo sticks with the program for 4-5 years, MAYBE he gives you something in year 3 besides just an insurance policy/positional depth. As a senior or RS junior, maybe he's even a valuable rotation player who plays pretty good D and rebounds the ball. And I'm not saying we don't need that--just that guys like Liddell and Gaffney actually go further towards addressing those types of needs than they do the needs that a wing like Roderick would be addressing. And I think Liddell is going to immediately provide loads more interior scoring than Diallo ever will.

Meanwhile, 6'5ish wings like Roderick with his level of skill and court savvy? IF they can earn the minutes, they're usually double digit scorers no later than their sophomore years. I guess the biggest question is if OSU would afford Roderick enough opportunity to get to that point that quickly? Because I have no doubt that he will get to that point sooner than later--wherever he plays his college ball--if the PT is there for him.

I'm sure Roderick will get more offers after the season and as teams have players that transfers or leave early freeing up ships. I think he's a MAC level guy, much like andre. We are recruiting now to be a top 3 team in the b1g and a final four caliber team. could he play a role on that kinda team? yeah, probably, but we should be able to recruit better and if we don't, we have enough to get by.

With coaches getting fired soon it might be a good idea if we can steal a big man.

Kai Jones, Gaffney's teammate, will probably see his potential coach Shaka Smart get fired in the next couple weeks. Wouldn't mind taking a swing because these recruits are often let free by the school.

Now this interests me. He seems to have a down year compared to his sophomore year but still interested. Off to find some tape.

EDIT: Hmmm, after looking a little deeper it seems he was absolutely dreadful against good teams. Small sample(Virginia, OSU, TCU). Impressive highlights.

didn't see this before posting about pierce in the 18-19 season thread. agree with nomatta and probably you, too, that pierce is a pass. even if his performances against quality teams had been better, i would still be hesitant because a grad transfer at the 3 invites trouble inside the locker room. can't say i'd be all that pleased if i were andre, jallow, ahrens, or liddell. if we lose a small forward, then perhaps it's different. anyway, in my opinion, pretty much any grad transfer from the 1 to the 4 is a risky proposition without attrition.

i'd love to see a grad transfer center, though. even the juco market appeals to me.

yeah, a good JUCO big for 2-3 years might even be ideal. any Derek Funderburks out there? (lol)
the juco player we want is khadim sy, who is another senegalese center that pitt is recruiting hard. was a virginia tech commit at one point. imposing and athletic for 6'10". also, going 32/100 from three this season is impressive. solid form.

edit: damn he looks good. great feet.

edit #2: unless there are off-the-court or between-the-ears concerns, the guy is a no-brainer. sweet fancy moses.

Justin Pierce would be somebody that would need to 'beef up' to be able to contend in the B10. He may be quick around the rim, but he'd take a hip shot and be over the baseline from some of the big boys in our league. That said, with maybe 30 lbs of new muscle, he would weather, but lack of height would make him a tweener four, rather than a solid five. Sorry to see Oden get his undergrad degree (not really), but in the sense of having his expertise in working with the bigs. Maybe a grad asst? What is the rumor about Ledee? Heard he was unhappy about few minutes, but not enough to transfer. Heck, get better! Go Bucks!
