OSU Men's Basketball Recruiting/Projections/General Discussions

I don't know if I can trust the idea that you can just get a knockdown shooter through the grad transfer market.

This isn't to slight Keyshawn because he really was instrumental in our last few games but he finished as a 30% 3-pt shooter for us after averaging 40% from 3 between two seasons playing in the ACC.

You might luck out and get one of those rare grad transfers whose game fully translates for you but far more often it seems like the grad transfer's #s usually dip significantly when they're playing for a new team (and often in a different conference). We're looking at this Pierce kid and his shooting percentages weren't even that great this past season at William & Mary (and were abysmal against good teams) in the freakin' Colonial.
Yes, often Grad transfers are disappointing. Thst being said, you can hit on one if you do your due diligence.

The required level of greatness is also a lot different when completing a lineup like this:

G Carton
G Walker
SF Wesson
PF Liddell
C Wesson

Bench: Gaffney, Jallow, Young, Washington, Muhammad, Ahrens, LeDee

Woods, Muhammad, Ahrens, Jallow, Washington, Young all started in the last few weeks. None are a lock to do so next season (though that 2nd year bump should not be undervalued based on unknown, new talent coming in).

His stats don't stand out as anything special. But he could potentially be a bigger Kyle Young with slightly more offensive game, is the take away I get from his stats. Which I guess would be an improvement.
the thing is, we don't need anything special and probably couldn't sign one of those "anything special" players anyway with kaleb projecting to get 28ish minutes next year. also, brunk progressed enough from his redshirt freshman to sophomore season to show some promise. something else to consider is that he averaged just under 19 minutes. all things being equal, if he had gotten what kaleb averaged in minutes, then brunk would have been a double-digit scorer. with continued development, brunk would be an excellent backup to kaleb. all of that being stated, kaleb and brunk both being true centers is a likely impediment to brunk choosing osu if there is interest from our side. and i'd be surprised if ho1tmann is not pushing hard for brunk.

the more i look at it, the more i expect that brunk will choose indiana. two main reasons: 1) iu is a better fit with tjd at the 4/5 than osu is with kaleb at the 5 and 2) brunk going to butler in the first place. he grew up just south of the indianapolis outerbelt and committed to a school just north of the downtown. bloomington is just over an hour away from high school, which i'm assuming is near his home. while columbus isn't that far away at just under 3 hours, brunk is still a guy who chose the hometown program out of high school. the biggest plus for osu is of course ho1tmann.

Joey lost his father to cancer early in his college career. Great kid. Has worked hard every year he’s played the game to get better. He’s a banger down low, won’t beat you with any athleticism but can catch the ball and hit the fundamental shots downlow. Best aspect is he plays with a lot of emotion, this is a Grade A teammate that will celebrate others.

Know a coach from Southport but I got no inside info at the time. Obviously IU and Ohio State are the word, small outside chance of Northwestern (finalist from HS). I’d lean the Hoosiers here...

another rumor is that he'll be a law student at iu. can't imagine playing high-major basketball the first two years of law school, but more power to him if so.

Brunk would be an absolutely fantastic guy to have manning the 5 with Kaleb. That's the dream scenario. We were wondering how we were going to convince a good big to come share minutes with Kaleb for a year or two. Well, here's the possible solution--a kid who originally committed to Holtmann and loves Holtmann and maybe just feels like he can be a part of something good.

Brunk is so much better than Diallo right now, there is no comparison. Brunk helps our team in a significant way, immediately, and not just for next season but for 2020-2021. Diallo probably wouldn't start helping until 2021-2022. You take Brunk if you can get him, all day every day.

I am not going to get my hopes up too much because Brunk is going to have other options that come with more guaranteed minutes, but his relationship with Holtmann matters. This would be a grand slam solution to the back-up big problem.

I'm not sure IU is definitely the better option in terms of minutes with De'Ron Davis, Clifton Moore, and TJD there but... maybe?
