The Ohio State men's hockey team, the hottest team in the nation, posted a win and a tie in one game last night. According to their league -- the Central Collegiate Hockey Association, which recognizes shootout victories -- the Buckeyes won 3-2. For NCAA purposes, it was 2-2.
Maybe a ruling from Toronto is in order.
Oops. We don't want to go there, do we?
The Buckeyes (16-6-3) semi-defeated Western Michigan (6-13-6) in Value City Arena in front of a throaty little crowd of 4,513. The fans were treated to 25-cent hot dogs and a five-round shootout. The last penalty shooter, Western Michigan winger Cam Watson, was thwarted by the right pad of Ohio State goaltender Dustin Carlson, and that was the end of it.
Carlson had a chance to end the shootout in the third round, but he was beaten on a quick wrist shot. He would not be beaten again. Center John Albert gave the Buckeyes a 2-1 edge, Carlson made the final save -- and Carlson charged out of the net, pumped his arms and met his teammates in a scrum above the right circle.
The Ohio State players don't much care for shootouts. Getting to a shootout means they failed to win in regulation or overtime. It means they gave a point away, at least in the eyes of the NCAA.
"But if we're going to a shootout, we want to win it," center Corey Elkins said.
That is the thing about these Buckeyes. Their propensity is to win, be it in regulation or extra time. They are 12-0-2, with two shootout victories, in their past 14 games. They are 14-1-2, with two shootout victories, in their past 17. They are 3-0 in shootouts and 2-0 in overtime games.
"Everyone keeps the faith," Elkins said. "Everyone keeps it steady emotionally."
Coach John Markell has his program rebounding after three miserable seasons. Last night, he put three seniors, one junior, 13 sophomores and two freshmen on the ice, and he wasn't pleased with the way they played, and the players weren't happy, and they still semi-won in a shootout.

better talent-correctIt's true that Fredo's been playing like dog[censored] since the OHC, but they still have a great deal of talent and a better coach. Until we can get a convincing regulation win against them, I consider the Fredomonkey (it is one word, right?) to still be on this program's back.
Here are the teams fighting for a 1st round bye in the CCHA tournament. Other than ND, anyone can still have their season fall apart at this point. I do like the fact that we have 2 more games to play than Fredo--potentially being a 4 point swing in our favor.

how are they unfair? At this point in this season these statements are very unfair and not needed. The buckeyes are playing with 3 seniors 22 sophomores/freshmen. They are very well coached and playing well above their experience, and where everyone thought they would be.
The best part is how this team is gelling, playing together, and cheering for each other. Markell deserves some credit for bringing this very young talented team together so fast.
At this point this season is a huge success no matter what happens from here on out. They have the toughest schedule left in the league with the easiest series by records being at Michigan State. Heres to hoping they can get points on every weekend.

Wednesday:
5:45 came pretty early Wednesday morning as we had to be to at the Schott by 6:30 to pack the bus and get ready for our trip to Alaska. Scraping the ice and snow off the windshield of my car, the first thing I began to think was how our plane was ever going to leave on time for Minnesota. Once I arrived at the Schott, I asked Leann if our flight was on schedule and she said that some flights had been canceled, but ours was set to leave without any hassle.
