Fredo(OH) takes it 2-1. With their dominance over the Buckeyes the last three seasons, including going 4-0 to date this season, they have now tied the all time series with one more game to go this Friday in Oxhole.

As an added insult, the WOSU announcers said that the Miamites outnumbered our own fans in the building. If that isn't a kick in the ass to Gene Smith as to how far this program has plummeted in the last three years, I don't know what it could possibly take to wake him up. If he can clean house and refuse to accept mediocrity in a non-revenue sport like wrestling, he sure as shit should take the same approach to hockey--a program that not only has the capacity to be a revenue generating sport but one that should be a revenue generating sport. So, what needs to happen?
I've posted a few threads detailing the free fall that this program has been in for three straight seasons. Moving forward, here are the two primary things that needs to be addressed in the next 12 months.
1) Coaching
Markell's time needs to come to an end. Yes, he took the program to the next level, but he's coasted on that season for a decade. Since then, the program stagnated and then went into free fall. We need a new coach! Casey should stay as Associate Head Coach and recruiting guru. For the head coach, however, a change needs to be made. Whether we roll the dice with a young up and coming coach then open up the piggy bank to keep him should he turn the program around or try to buy an established winner, I don't know.
2) Attendance
As much as I'd love to see a 7,500 seat hockey specific arena, it's not going to happen for a generation. Combine the inability to walk away from the Schott with the athletic department's debt load from the recent building boom and the overall slowdown and credit crunch in the economy and I can't foresee the hockey program moving out of the Schott for at least a decade. The question then becomes how to consistently get 7-8 thousand fans in the door and 10K+ for big games. While a top 5 team might fill the building, that's not in the foreseeable future.
My feeling is that the athletic department's marketing of the hockey program has been ass-backwards. Their primary aim seems to be marketing it to the larger Columbus community as a "family friendly" bargain basement version of the Blue Jackets, and the students have been an afterthought. There's no better indication of this than the god damned lame ass "Buckeye Family Feud" played during intermissions. Buckeye Family Feud? That makes me want to fucking puke.
Get the students into the building. Make Ohio State hockey games fun, edgy and young--like the old Columbus Chill games. Replace Buckeye Family Feud with a visit by the Hanson Brothers. Have Slap Shot night. Market it to the students, then run buses specifically for the hockey games from the North and South dorms as well as High Street. The AD needs to create an environment and product that the students want to be a part of several times a year...not one that some Hilliard "dad of three" is going to go to once a year because he doesn't want to pay Blue Jackets prices. There are 36,000 undergraduates and 14,000 gradaute students on that campus. Getting them into the building should be the first, second and third priorities when it comes to marketing. Instead it seems like Hillard Dad is the priority, and the students are the afterthought.
