Any of you (besides your resident Miami hater) have a rooting interest in the Miami v. Michigan series coming up next weekend? Just curious... I know how you all hate Michigan.

#1 vs. #2. Believe it or not, a pair of tickets on E-Bay were bid up to $500 for next Friday's game in Oxford. Its damn-near impossible to get a ticket that's not 10-20x over face value.
how many miami games do you go to?

id like to see what you think of will weber next year...

Fredo(OH) takes it 2-1. With their dominance over the Buckeyes the last three seasons, including going 4-0 to date this season, they have now tied the all time series with one more game to go this Friday in Oxhole.

Men?s Hockey: Buckeyes Clipped by No. 5 RedHawks, 2-1 - The Ohio State Buckeyes Official Athletics Site - OhioStateBuckeyes.com

As an added insult, the WOSU announcers said that the Miamites outnumbered our own fans in the building. If that isn't a kick in the ass to Gene Smith as to how far this program has plummeted in the last three years, I don't know what it could possibly take to wake him up. If he can clean house and refuse to accept mediocrity in a non-revenue sport like wrestling, he sure as shit should take the same approach to hockey--a program that not only has the capacity to be a revenue generating sport but one that should be a revenue generating sport. So, what needs to happen?

I've posted a few threads detailing the free fall that this program has been in for three straight seasons. Moving forward, here are the two primary things that needs to be addressed in the next 12 months.

1) Coaching
Markell's time needs to come to an end. Yes, he took the program to the next level, but he's coasted on that season for a decade. Since then, the program stagnated and then went into free fall. We need a new coach! Casey should stay as Associate Head Coach and recruiting guru. For the head coach, however, a change needs to be made. Whether we roll the dice with a young up and coming coach then open up the piggy bank to keep him should he turn the program around or try to buy an established winner, I don't know.

2) Attendance
As much as I'd love to see a 7,500 seat hockey specific arena, it's not going to happen for a generation. Combine the inability to walk away from the Schott with the athletic department's debt load from the recent building boom and the overall slowdown and credit crunch in the economy and I can't foresee the hockey program moving out of the Schott for at least a decade. The question then becomes how to consistently get 7-8 thousand fans in the door and 10K+ for big games. While a top 5 team might fill the building, that's not in the foreseeable future.

My feeling is that the athletic department's marketing of the hockey program has been ass-backwards. Their primary aim seems to be marketing it to the larger Columbus community as a "family friendly" bargain basement version of the Blue Jackets, and the students have been an afterthought. There's no better indication of this than the god damned lame ass "Buckeye Family Feud" played during intermissions. Buckeye Family Feud? That makes me want to fucking puke.

Get the students into the building. Make Ohio State hockey games fun, edgy and young--like the old Columbus Chill games. Replace Buckeye Family Feud with a visit by the Hanson Brothers. Have Slap Shot night. Market it to the students, then run buses specifically for the hockey games from the North and South dorms as well as High Street. The AD needs to create an environment and product that the students want to be a part of several times a year...not one that some Hilliard "dad of three" is going to go to once a year because he doesn't want to pay Blue Jackets prices. There are 36,000 undergraduates and 14,000 gradaute students on that campus. Getting them into the building should be the first, second and third priorities when it comes to marketing. Instead it seems like Hillard Dad is the priority, and the students are the afterthought.

I was at the game last night and I agree with everything ORD_Buckeye just posted. We were outnumbered and it was embarrasing. It is def time for Markell to go. Dear lord we are a laughingstock in our own state.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again. We are The Ohio State University. We are the flagship institution of the state's system of higher education. There is absolutely NO REASON that we should ever be second to one of The Other State Universities in anything from football to physics...from history to hockey.

:slappy:Even when they're on top (in one single thing), Fredo of Ohio can't stop thinking about their big brother flagship university and can't stop trying to vainly reason how they actually have it better.

This is from one of the more rabid Ohio State haters on the of Ohio board.

I hate to beat that horse again, but the idiots behind me at the Miami at OSU game last night got me thinking on it again. They continued to comment that OSU is better than Miami in just about everything. I won't deny that they'd kick our asses in football in just about any year except 2003, but I can't help but think that losing the national championship is worse than going 6-7...

Personally, I'd like to see the ups and downs of a program - it brings out the best in you as a fan, and as a program.

:bow:Bow down to your flagship, Fredo. Bow down to your betters.

I have mixed emotions about the game last night. I have a dregree from both institutions. I did my undergrad work at Miami and my graduate work at OSU. I understand both points of view on the subject. I liked seeing Miami do well in a sport, but as an OSU fan I don't like seeing the visitors outnumber the home side. Well for me it was a win/win situation.

some of their fans were even doing the gator chomp last night. stay classy fredo

Somebody on the USCHO Ohio State thread had a great response to a Miamite troll who came over to flame during their temporary moment of glory. He told Fredo, "you remind me of Peter Lorre's character in Casablanca during an exchange with Humphrey Bogart...

Miami of Ohio(Lorre): You really despise me don't you, Rick?

Ohio State(Bogart): If I gave you any thought, I probably would.

coaching: the world knows where i stand

other: schotts not a bad hockey venue, that being said why not just let students and kids in free? hockey isnt going to be a revenue sport, thats just the facts. a fan base and youth interest will pay dividends in the long run.

a feeder system is in place with the ushl jr jackets, why isnt this being fed?

Any idea on what the men's hockey team's budget is? I was hoping that the Indy Star's database would have it, but they just break down athletic department budgets into football, m bball, w bball, other sports and general overhead.

Dude, it wasn't even close. Official attendance at VCA last night was 3871. There were not more than a few hundred Miami (OH) fans there. To outnumber Buckeye fans last night, they would have to have at least 1936 fans in attendance. It wasn't anywhere near that close. They were just loud (with their annoying stolen classless cheers) and seated mostly together. The large section of Miami (OH) fans seated in sec. 124 couldn't have been any more than 300. Those who were there last night know that?s were the majority were seated. To say they had more than 1936 fans in attendance is completely ludicrous!

I thought there was something in place at Ohio State where you either paid nothing or a little extra on your tuition and you were able to attend all nonrevenue sports. Why couldn't they include hockey in that type of scheme if it does exist? I think that if the Ohio State hockey team would be in contention attendance would go up but there are just a lot of sports at Ohio State and the students have to pick and choose.

I totally agree that if they had built a 7500-10,000 seat arena hockey specific and may be put only 17,000 seats in the Schott and reduce some of the amenities it would have been better for hockey and basketball.
