Hockey

I don't know whether this belongs in this thread or not. So if it doesn't, I apologize.

The MN state hockey tournament is taking place right now. Watching them play....even the small division playoffs is amazing. Some of these teams are really good! For example Warroad... a town of 1722 people total... their high school hockey team beat the US women's team about 3 years ago. Hockey here is football in Ohio. I wish OSU could get up here for some of its recruiting. The U has a kid named Ness coming next year and he is amazing.

I wish Markell had someone on his staff that had connections up here and could get in the door with some of the high schools up here.

Ohio State Upsets Northern Michigan, 4-3

Buckeyes Steal Game 1 on Road

MARQUETTE, Mich. (March 7) ? Round one of the CCHA playoffs began at the Berry Events Center Friday as the sixth seeded Northern Michigan Wildcats took on the 11th seed Ohio State Buckeyes. The two teams came in boasting an even rivalry of 30-30-3 and both were looking to take the first game of this crucial series.
Last season, the Buckeyes faced the Wildcats at home during the first round. After the Wildcats lost 6-2 the first night, they swapped senior goalie Bill Zaniboni for freshman Brian Stewart and stole the series with wins on Saturday and Sunday.
With Stewart in goal to kick off the playoffs this time around, the Wildcats were out for a win. The Buckeyes had other things in mind as Tommy Goebel put the puck past Stewarts left skate into the corner of the net at 6:34 of the first period. John Albert and Jason DeSantis recorded assists on the goal.
?It was kind of fluky,? Goebel said. ?I just snuck in the short side somehow and I think he got the other one back, but I?ll take it.?
The Wildcats retaliated with a power-play goal at 15:39. Erik Gustafsson passed the puck across the ice to Matt Siddall who shot the puck towards the net in one motion. Freshman Jared Brown tipped it in to tie up the game.
With 1:21 left in the first the Buckeyes regained their lead with shot from Patrick Schafer, Chris Reed and Peter Boyd. The puck went underneath Stewart and into the left corner of the net.
?There?s a little bit of apprehension [with our younger players] ,? Wildcat coach Walt Kyle said. ?When you fall behind that?s when inexperience shows.?
?They have the players that capitalize your mistakes and that?s playoff hockey,? Siddall said. ?What do you do? Just try to play a good angle or give it to someone else. Those guys are flying and they?re some of the best players in the league. Tonight we gave them too much ice and that?s what a team like that?s going to do. They?re going to play well.?
The second period was in Ohio State?s favor. At 10:47 Goebel fed the puck to DeSantis who came up the center and put it left of Stewart.
?We didn?t get over excited,? DeSantis said. ?We stuck to the game plan. When we get pucks deep is when we?re on our game. We were just throwing everything we could at the net, just crashing it and create anything we could. We just threw pucks to the net.?
The Buckeyes increased their lead to 4-1 at 13:54 with a power-play goal from Todd Rudasill who sent the puck right of Stewart?s right skate from the right faceoff circle. DeSantis and Goebel had the assists giving them each three points for the game.
?Goebel and DeSantis, they?re our seniors, leading by example,? Buckeye coach John Markell said. ?They have to lead the way. They have the experience. They?ve been there before. They know how to chip in and be a part of it.?
The Wildcats went into the third outshooting the Buckeyes 18-13. At 16:07, Siddall scored with assists from Gustafsson and Tim Hartung.
As the clock ran down, Northern pulled their goalie to give them a 6 on 5 advantage. With 1:56 left, TJ Miller scored with assists from Gustafsson and Mark Olver to end the game 3-4, giving the Buckeyes the series lead.
?The first three shifts they were all over us but we hung with it and we went up 4-1,? Markell said. ?They came back ardently. Joe made some good saves, especially in the second period. Our guys put a great effort in and learned a great lesson: that it?s not over ?til it?s over. We got it done. We got the W and we move forward.?

If the buckeyes can pull another one out over northern, and western loses to ferris state (which should happen easily) we will be playing that state up north next weekend.

Good luck Buckeyes! I will be in ann arbor next weekend for the games if we can pull another win out.

Recruiting is not the issue at Ohio State. Associate head coach Casey is a recruiting monster. We have the second highest rated class in the country (after Minnesota) coming in next year. We've had numerous top 10 and top 5 classes over the last decade.

The issue is one of development after they arrive in Columbus. The most notable cases were NHL 1st round picks Steckell and Umberger who seemed to stagnate development-wise in Columbus after their freshmen years.

IMO, Ohio State has been able to bring in far more talent than would seem likely for a school with a mediocre hockey history in a state with little hockey culture that's shared with two other D1 programs.

Note to mods: if you feel this crosses the line, please delete it. I'm not sure how much I can comment on the program's obvious shortcomings without it being construed as attacking Markell--of which I'll directly stop. Just unsure of what indirect criticisms might be considered over the line.

If we can pull out another against NMU and WMU pulls the upset, we'll be playing Fredo. After 6 straight losses at the hands of little brother, how sweet would it be to bring their dream season crashing to a halt without even making it to The Joe.

Wildcats Even Series With Buckeyes

Stewart Stops Penalty Shot Late In Third

MARQUETTE, Mich. (March 8) ? ?Let the past remain in the past.?
That?s what the Ohio State Buckeyes said as they entered the first round of the CCHA playoffs. After falling to the Northern Michigan Wildcats after holding a one game lead in Columbus during last year?s playoffs, they came up to Marquette with a vengeance and won Friday?s game 4-3.
However, the past decided to show itself again as the Wildcats took an early lead and held on for a 4-2 win, mirroring the pattern of last season?s playoffs.
?Ohio State is definitely a team that can hurt us and we had to come out and just play our game,? Wildcats? junior Nick Sirota said. ?We had a good game yesterday, but the bounces just didn?t go our way and today they just happened to and we?re already looking forward to tomorrow?s match up. It?s going to be the same type of game and we?re just going to have to take it from there.?
The first period kicked off three minutes in with a goal for Northern. Alan Dorich shot the puck from the blue line, and after Buckeyes? goalie Joseph Palmer blocked it with his glove, the puck went behind the net where the Wildcats? Jared Brown passed it forward to Sirota, who put the puck in the five hole.
?That was definitely a confidence booster for them and gave them some momentum,? said Ohio State?s Jason DeSantis, who had two points on the night. ?A goal at the end of a period isn?t something that we want, but it was an unlucky bounce.?
Unwilling to step down, the Buckeyes retaliated with a goal at 7:03 from Kyle Reed, Tommy Goebel, and DeSantis, who shot the puck from the point, putting it behind Wildcats? goalie Brian Stewart?s right side.
?I was nervous at the start because I had a rough game last night,? Stewart said. ?I came into this game and had to get my game back on track. They scored on the second shot of the night. It was a slap shot from the point and there was a half screen. I was a little riled about that but I had to fight my way through it.?
The Wildcats took their lead back at 1:28 of the second. The goal, from Phil Fox, Matt Butcher and Ray Kaunisto, was a wrist shot by Fox that went low stick side.
The same spot gave the ?Cats their two goal lead at 19:59 when Sirota and Erik Gustafsson helped Mark Olver push the puck through unreal traffic in front of the net on a power play.
6:18 in the third, the ?Cats bumped up their lead to 4-1. The goal, from Sirota, Siddall, and Gustafsson, hit two Buckeyes? defensemen before making it into the net.
?We got some goals from some very key guys,? Wildcats? coach Walt Kyle said. ?Sirota was great when we needed him to be great. Siddall and Gustafsson were outstanding. Butcher was outstanding. Greger Hanson was outstanding tonight. Stewart was solid. He made some great saves tonight and he pulled off the penalty shot. We believe in him and we know what he?s capable of.?
?Our defense has done really well the last few months since we all started playing better,? Stewart said. ?We?re stepping up, clearing rebounds and it?s a huge help. We have to keep the same intensity and we cannot hold back. We have to keep on pounding, keep on going, and not give up. No mental errors and keep the momentum going.?
?Honestly, we?ve played the same the last two nights,? Sirota said. ?We lose tomorrow and we?re out and we know that. I don?t doubt this team?s effort. This effort is here every night. It?s just a matter of getting the puck to the net and playing a strong game.?
At 18:05, Ohio State?s Nick Biondo took a penalty shot after Dorich tripped him heading to the net. Stewart had the save.
?That was my first penalty shot I?ve ever had in a game,? Stewart said. ?It was cool. All our guys take about 20 penalty shots on me each every day in practice so I just came out and challenged and just shut down the five hole.?
At 19:45, after pulling their goalie, Ohio State?s Kyle Reed pulled the Buckeyes within two with the help of DeSantis and Kyle Hood. Despite their late effort, the game ended 4-2 for the Wildcats with even shots on goal.
