Oh well, Gene Smith has assured us that all is well, for we have a highly rated recruiting class coming in. We have never, ever had a highly rated recruiting class before so that obviously will be the difference.:hatepc:

Wildcats Win Two Straight To Battle Back

MARQUETTE, Mich. (March 9) ? Northern Michigan coach Walt Kyle compared the first round of playoff hockey to a hockey game itself: best-of-three, like a three-period game. The Ohio State Buckeyes won the first period, or game, on Friday with a score of 4-3. Saturday went to the Wildcats with a score of 4-2. But everyone knows it?s the third period that counts and the Wildcats showed that they played 60-minute hockey with tonight?s 6-1 victory.
?I?m really proud of the effort and one of the things I?ve said about this team all year is there?s not quit in them and they?re really resilient,? Kyle said. ?That?s a credit to the leadership. That?s a credit to all the guys buying into what we talk about. We talk about winning games in the third period and to win a playoff series late.
?We lost the first game and a lot of times the other team can build off of that but these guys kept it together and were able to go out there and come back and win the last two. So I?m really proud of the effort and the discipline and the patience of our team.?
Though the Wildcats won the game, Ohio State controlled the play for the majority of the first period. The calls and shots were even until 19:05 when Northern?s Mark Olver cleared the puck from the Wildcat?s zone. Andrew Sarauer picked it up and banked it back to Olver who put it left of Buckeye goalie Joseph Palmer giving the Wildcats the game?s edge.
The Buckeyes didn?t hold back. They controlled the game in every way during the second. They outskated, outshot and outhit the Wildcats, but took two bad calls at a bad time. At 12:59, Tommy Goebel went to the box for tripping and at 14:46 Jason DeSantis went in for cross checking.
The 15-second overlap gave the Wildcats a window to up their lead. A freshman trio consisting of Jerad Brown and Erik Gustafsson, Olver put the puck past Palmer, showing that you don?t have to have playoff experience to win a game.
The Buckeyes fell to the Wildcats in the third period. At 1:37 the Wildcats scored when TJ Miller fed Olver the puck who gave it to Phil Fox. Fox sent it across the crease and right of Palmer.
1:37 also marked the time when Patrick Schafer took a roughing call to give NMU their second power play goal of the night. Gustafsson passed the puck from the faceoff circle to Brown who waited in front of the net to send the puck past Palmer?s left knee.
Buckeye Peter Boyd wasn?t ready to give up, and at 3:24 he, Schaffer and Kyle Reed took advantage of a moment when Brian Stewart left the goal and put it past his glove.
Northern retaliated at 8:22 with their third power play goal of the night, a one timer from Matt Siddall at the point. The assist went to Alan Dorich.
Ohio State pulled their goalie at 14:37, hoping to give them an advantage. Brown took a delay of game penalty at 16:26 giving the Buckeyes a 6 on 4, but the Wildcat defense prevailed.
?We came out with a game plan and we just wanted to play 60 hard minutes of hockey and that?s what we did and everybody through the lineup brought everything they had and that?s all you can ask from those guys,? Siddall said. ?And those young kids played great. From Stewart to our defense to the guys up front.?
Billy Smith, Blake Cosgrove and Brown summed up the game at 19:08 with an open net goal to send the Wildcats into the next round of the playoffs. Of course, they would have never made it without sophomore goalie Stewart and his 35 saves tonight.
?Stewart wasn?t very good on Friday but he answered two nights in a row,? Kyle said. ?He?s been the backbone of our team. Not necessarily with the goalie performance but with the steady performance. We know what to expect from him.?

Men's hockey

Ohio State gave up goals in the first and second periods and allowed two goals in the first two minutes of the third period in a 6-1 loss to Northern Michigan in Marquette, Mich.

According an O-zone article:

Markell met with director of athletics Gene Smith this week and several sources said the coach has been assured he and his staff will be back next season.
The Buckeyes have had three straight losing seasons after making the NCAA Tournament the previous three years.
Working in Markell?s favor is an improving young team loaded with freshmen that has gone 10-13-3 after a 2-10-1 start and a recruiting class of seven for next season that is ranked second in the nation behind Minnesota?s.

Here is a Rivals article on the 7 hockey recruits coming in this fall:

OSU Icers Ink Seven For 2008-2009

Less than a week after their basketball counterparts signed four players to National Letters of Intent for 2008, the Ohio State men's hockey team welcomed a new class of its own.

After signing a record class a year ago, coach John Markell brought in just seven players for the 2008-09 season, including four forwards and three defensemen. All but two of the recruits come to OSU from the British Columbia Hockey League (BCHL) ? including three teammates from the Penticton Vees ?with one player coming from the U.S. National Team Development Program and another from the United State Hockey League (USHL).

Entire article: BuckeyeGrove.com - OSU icers ink seven for 2008-09

Also. per article (above):

This class comes on the heels of Markell's largest freshman class a year ago. The 2007 recruiting class consisted of 15 players, including nine forwards, five defensemen and goalie Dustin Carlson of Forest Lake, Minn.

The prize of the class was New York defenseman Shane Sims, who was a big get for the Buckeyes out of the USHL.

A #2 recruiting class may be the best class that we've ever had. Ohio State hockey may be "looking up" next year. :) I did find some past recruiting history:

The 2006-07 Rankings: Ohio State's class #11

Keep an eye on: The Buckeyes welcome three of the Central Ontario Junior Hockey League?s finest ? goalie Nick Filion was the circuit?s 2006 rookie of the year and wing Mathieu Picard scored 84 points in 49 games.

The 2005-06 Rankings: Ohio State not in top 15

The 2004-05 Rankings: Ohio State's class #11

Don't let the size of their recruiting class fool you: even though the Buckeyes have 11 freshmen, the quantity contains plenty of quality led by forward Tom Fritsche and defenseman Johann Kroll.
Impact players: Tom Fritsche, Johann Kroll, Kyle Hood

The 2003-04 Rankings: Ohio State's class was not in top 12

Just to clarify, my point was not that we don't have a highly regarded recruiting class coming in. My point was that we've had several highly regarded recruiting classes come in over the last decade (see: Steckell and Umberger) and have never won a CCHA championship with any of them, so forgive me for having a hearty amount of skepticism as to how this class will be any different.

The other issue is that when we do get highly touted recruits, their talent development seems to stagnate after their freshmen year. Again, Steckell and Umberger are perfect examples.

I'm a big fan of what Casey has been able to do as recruiting director. My problem is with how these recruits have been developed upon arriving in Columbus.

I don't post here that much because I do not see the games but over the years everything that I have read here and on other sites is that Casey is one hell of a recruiter and if John Boy should be fired Casey should be kept just because of his recruiting abilities.

I guess with the #2 recruiting class coming in I would give Markell one more year and if he doesn't show a hell of lot of improvement it would be bye-bye. I think you almost owe it to the recruits coming in to keep him.

OTTAWA -- Center Zac Dalpe was drafted into the NHL yesterday, immediately finding himself in a difficult situation.
Dalpe, a center who has signed to play at Ohio State this fall, was drafted in the second round (No. 45) by the Carolina Hurricanes, and therein lies the potential problem.

Hurricanes owner Peter Karmanos also owns the Plymouth Whalers of the Ontario Hockey League, the junior club that owns Dalpe's rights.

There is much speculation that Karmanos, through the Hurricanes, will lean hard on Dalpe to break his commitment to Ohio State and join the junior ranks.

Dalpe, who sat at the draft yesterday with OSU assistant coach Casey Jones, was asked if Ohio State coach John Markell should be nervous.
"He might be a little bit," Dalpe said. "But I gave coach Markell my word.
"I think I want to go to school. There's a lot of speculation, but I'm a pretty loyal guy."

Plymouth coach Greg Stefan hinted that a sales job was forthcoming.
"We think it's in Zac's best interest to play with us," he said. "But I respect his family.

NHL notebook: Draftee reaffirms tie to Ohio State

Tuesday, June 24, 2008 2:59 AM

From staff and wire reports

Ohio State recruit Zac Dalpe said yesterday that he plans to honor his commitment to the university despite being drafted in the second round by the Carolina Hurricanes.
Hurricanes owner Peter Karmanos also owns the junior team, the Plymouth Whalers, that drafted Dalpe last year. The Buckeyes fear that the Hurricanes will steer Dalpe, an 18-year-old forward, toward the Whalers.
"Nothing has changed," Dalpe said by phone from his hometown of Paris, Ontario. "I'm 100 percent committed to Ohio State."

Men's Hockey: Casey Jones, assistant coach with the OSU men's hockey team for the past 13 years, has been hired as the Associate Head Coach at Cornell University, his alma mater.

Jones captained the Big Red during the 1989-1990 season. For his career, he averaged exactly one point a game with 112 points in 112 games.

Jones was previously an assitant at Cornell from 1991-1993.

This is not good news for the Ohio State hockey program and probably Coach Markell. It has always been my understanding that Jones did the majority of the recruiting and brought in some top-level talent and Markell never did anything with it. Always thought that if he was fired Jones would be named the head coach or one of their former players Paul P. would be brought back. I do not think this bold wells for the future of the program but only time will tell.
