OL Taylor Decker (Detroit Lions)

that's the general tradition, but it's not a hard-and-fast rule like in the NFL. The NFL is strict about it, but teams can apply for exceptions to the rule. In college, it's really more just traditional numbering system. Individual teams might have more strict guidelines for themselves, but there aren't any NCAA rules about it as far as I know. But that might not stop ESPN from a headline about Ohio State getting away with breaking offensive linemen numbering rules.

Thought tackles were numbered in the 70's; guards in the 60's'; and centers in the 50's......Decker is #68?

Anyone clarify?

At The Top Of The Deck

August 16, 2012
Since he started playing football and especially while he dominated everyone in his path in high school, Taylor Decker was told he could go far in the sport.

Blessed with size, strength and surprisingly nimble feet, Decker actually was a two-sport star at Vandalia (Ohio) Butler as he also was a three-year letterwinner in basketball. But football was the gig, his path to a major college.

During his senior season, Rivals.com rated him as the No. 23 offensive tackle in the nation and anointed him a four-star prospect. Scout.com considered him to be the 77th-best player overall in the country and the seventh-best player in Ohio from his class.

After leading the Aviators to their first winning season in eight years, he was named first-team all-state in Division II by The Associated Press.

Sure enough, many major programs came courting, and nearly every single one in the Midwest. Decker eventually settled upon Notre Dame. But after Urban Meyer was hired as Ohio State?s new head coach and he lured ND offensive assistants Ed Warinner and Tim Hinton to his staff, Decker began to wonder if Columbus was the better destination.

He did, in fact, change his mind and signed a letter-of-intent to attend Ohio State. Meyer gushed about his prized tackle and then gushed some more after Decker enrolled early and immediately showed coaches and teammates that he had the goods to be on the field.

Still, even with his credentials, his massive frame (6-7, 310), his head start on most of the other newcomers, and Ohio State?s current lack of depth on the offensive line, Decker is amazed that he entered preseason camp with a reasonable chance to start and an excellent chance to play with regularity.

?I?m truly blessed with this opportunity to play here,? he told SportsRappUp.com during OSU?s Media Day on Sunday. ?Coming in, did I think I?d be able to compete like that? Honestly, no. But I?m happy that I?ve been able to take advantage of the physical tools that I?ve been given and taking advantage of learning the offense early before I came here.

?So I?m excited for it. I?m definitely pumped up for it. I just hope I can get on the field.?

The thing about Taylor is that along with Evan Lisle he may have the biggest upside of all of our OL currently on the roster. Mewhort, Norwell, Lindsey and Hall will all go down as having stellar careers at tOSU and logging one, maybe two :-) undefeated seasons. They were the heart of the Offense last year and will be again this year.

But Taylor has some tools that once developed could make him the best OL we have had in a very long time. His Junior and Senior years should be something to watch. JMHO.

BTW - As excited as I am about Taylor's future I am even more excited about Evan Lisle. This guy is going to be an ALL B1G team player and an All American player by the time all is said and done. Again, JMHO.

Totally agreed. Taylor was terrific in the spring, and should be our anchor at LT next season. Hopefully Lisle will earn the RT spot and Farris will nail down one of the guard positions next fall.

Decker could add what OSU offensive line needs
Posted: Sunday, August 18, 2013
By JIM NAVEAU

COLUMBUS ? When Ohio State offensive tackle Jack Mewhort imagines Urban Meyer and the Buckeyes? offensive coordinator Tom Herman formulating OSU?s offensive game plan, it conjures up visions of lab coats, test tubes and new inventions.

?Those two together, it?s like mad scientists at work,? Mewhort said. ?Coach Herman is such a bright guy and a lot of the stuff he draws up is unbelievable. You pair that with a guy like Coach Meyer and being in that room when they?re doing it, I couldn?t even imagine it.?

Mewhort is one of four returning starters on the offensive line for Ohio State. Five, if you count tight end Jeff Heuerman.

Center Corey Linsley and guards Andrew Norwell and Marcus Hall are also back.

The only replacement that needs to be found is someone to fill the right tackle spot Reid Fragel played last season.

It appears sophomore Taylor Decker could be ready provide the missing element on OSU?s offensive line.

?Taylor Decker (Vandalia Butler) has solidified himself as a starting candidate,? Meyer said at OSU?s media day.

But Decker isn?t ready to take that as a guarantee he is a starter.

?I won?t say that to myself, not until I step out onto that field for the first game. I don?t think it?s been officially stated. I feel like I?ve still got work to do. I started camp well. I want to finish camp well. I just have to keep performing better and better,? he said.

Here's to hoping Decker rebounds this week. Not his best of performances which was very surprising to me, but all the word from camp was how great he looked so hopefully it was just first game jitters. Matching up a bit with a guy like Mack didn't make it any easier too, he was gonna get his no matter what but overall Decker looked flustered to me.
