OL Malcolm Pridgeon (Official Thread)

Just food for thought, one of the topics about the recruiting class is the risk of only taking 2 OL.

If Pridgeon red shirts then you are really taking 3 (and already know what you have in one of the 3). Takes a lot of the risk off the table.

So keeping his RS in tact may allow room for an extra 5 star that wants in the '17 class.
I think that's the goal, but if he can help us win a title then they burn the redshirt. Next year is important, but we made the playoffs this year and that's not a guarantee in the next 2.

Unless Prince is just a dumpster fire, slide a TE over there to help and hold The Pridge back. We shouldn't need a junior college recruit to come in and save our bacon in the playoff. We might need it, but we shouldn't. Hopefully, we can sack up and get it done without so we get two solid years from him.

Another thought to throw out there...Prince's struggles have been primarily in pass protection and his run blocking has not been so bad. Perhaps Pridgeon comes in on obvious passing downs at RT, or as an extra OL to help instead of Bowen? Seems really unorthodox and perhaps too limited of a role to burn his RS, but you never know.

And for the record, I highly doubt he plays either since continuity is so important at OL. However, I can't say the continuity factor means as much as it typically does when you have 3 OL taking home awards left and right, while the other 2 rank incredibly low. Usually you see the struggling OL start elevating their game along with their comrades as the season progresses, but that does not appear to be happening here.

Agree with all your points. Continuity is important... if you're playing well as a complete unit. If you have a weak link (and this OL certainly has that), perhaps a shake up is possible, especially considering the extra time to practice. I mean, if Malcolm Pridgeon is pushing guys around in practice like he's Orlando Pace, you ain't keeping him off the field against Clemson just for continuity.

The red shirt is a red herring. If Pridgeon is clearly the better option, the coaches aren't hesitating to throw him in there. And if he's that darn good, he's not staying past next year anyway, even if he redshirts.

The more likely scenario is that Pridgeon just isn't ready to perform or isn't performing better than Prince, not that the coaches would be afraid to mess with chemistry or burn his red shirt.

Reporters crawled to the Woody Hayes Athletic Center on the coldest day of the year Thursday for Ohio State's Fiesta Bowl Media Day. Urban Meyer met with the media in the team room for the first time since Ohio State found out they made the College Football Playoff on Dec. 4.
  • Malcolm Pridgeon isn't ready to play in the Playoff even though he recently got his black stripe off: "But he's going to be a very good player for us here. He still has two years left and he will play for us."

This is why Prince better step his game up in the playoffs and in the offseason, Pridgeon will be breathing down his neck immediately. He didn't come here to sit

Yeah, you have to think if Pridgeon stays health he'll be "right in the mix" competing for a starting position on the OL. Ideally there will be only one definite opening on the OL with Elflein being the only senior. Potentially, I could see both Prince and Pridgeon being starters though; if Jordan or Price moved to center and (probably) Prince moving to guard.

I think that's where Prince ultimately belongs on that unit. I don't think he has the lateral quickness to cover the ground needed to be a Tackle. At least that was my observation this season. He had moments, but never seemed to have a full grasp of the position.

That's assuming going into next season, that Prince is still considered one of our top 5 options along the line... He could very well see himself sitting behind Pridgeon, and we still have some young unproven options sitting right now that could put it together. We could possibly see Wohlbaugh at C, leave Price and Jordan at G, and essentially Prince would be the only man fighting for his spot

Josh Myers should make some noise early. It will be interesting to see how quickly he adapts to being a more balance Tackle, since Miamisburg was a very run heavy team.

I thought I saw somewhere that said that Josh could be G... Not sure
He's so supremely talented as a blocker, he could probably contribute at multiple spots on the line in his first year.

Hearing this guy is healthy makes me feel MUCH better about O-line depth. I remember Urban's first season here, the offense had zero offensive line depth. Next season, were approaching a possibility of having a rotation to keep guys fresh. Crazy.

Agreed, this is great conversation to be able to have!
