Jamarco Jones (54) of Chicago De La Salle, a highly regarded football commitment to OSU, will have to say goodbye to another sport he loves — basketball — when he joins the Buckeyes in 2014.

By Tim May
The Columbus Dispatch Friday October 4, 2013

  • Jamarco Jones is fired up about Ohio State’s game at Northwestern tonight because, to borrow the theme song from ESPN’s College GameDay, “the Buckeyes are coming … to his city.”

“It’s pretty exciting,” said Jones, a blue-chip offensive line prospect from Chicago (De La Salle) who committed to OSU in June. “You get to see all the Buckeye fans come through Chicago —I am sure there will be tons here.

“And it’s another prime-time game for Ohio State, and College GameDay is going to be here.”

If only Jones had a ticket to the game in nearby Evanston. But a week after traveling to Columbus to watch the Buckeyes beat Wisconsin in prime time, for which being an OSU recruit he was allowed to accept free admission, he won’t have that luxury tonight. Already committed to OSU, he isn’t being recruited by Northwestern, and the visiting team is not allowed to play host to prospects at away games.

But he’ll be there in spirit, he said, because in many ways he already feels like he is a Buckeye. Since picking OSU over Michigan and Michigan State, a couple of other schools have stayed in contact with him — he wouldn’t say which ones — but he has remained firm in his decision.

De La Salle welcomed back JaMarco Jones to its offensive line Friday. He, along with the other members of that group, dominated the second half of its game against St. Laurence to take away a 38-16 Catholic League White victory.

Jones, who is committed to Ohio State, played his first game after recovering from a left shoulder injury.

“The O-line really took over the game in the second half,’’ Meteors coach Dan O’Keefe said. “We were very sloppy and a little flat to start the game. That’s unusual. They usually get up for this game.’’

Free ESPN - UA game features fascinating matchups

DE Chad Thomas (Miami/Booker T. Washington) vs. OT Jamarco Jones (Chicago/De La Salle Institute
In a class that features very few true pass-rushers but several topflight run-stoppers, DE Chad Thomas likely will stand out in one-on-one situations. He will be one of the best natural pass-rushers in the 2014 Under Armour All-America game. Conversely, Jamarco Jones is one of the more athletic big men in attendance, but as with most young offensive tackles, he can be raw and technically unrefined. This is where the offense is at a distinct disadvantage. Thomas will be able to pin his ears back and go with an athletic edge between the two. Jones will have to pay close attention to his feet, balance, bend and lateral agility to hold up against Thomas' speed and explosive first step. However, where Jones can shut down Thomas is by using his strength and getting his hands on Thomas quickly. Thomas is undersized and lacks lower-body strength, which Jones must take advantage of to try to frustrate Thomas off the edge.
