OL Chase Farris (Official Thread)

Even Ohio State football players can’t refuse request from Starr

Ohio State offensive lineman, and Elyria native, Chase Farris signs an autograph for Mackenzie Williams, 7, of Elyria, on Thursday.

When Elyria High School intervention specialist Stacie Starr makes a request, her unbridled abundance of energy makes it hard to say no.

It doesn’t matter if you are a former Elyria Schools student, living the college life at The Ohio State University and a part of the national champion Buckeye football team. When Starr calls, you come.

That’s how former EHS Pioneers Chase Farris, class of 2011, and Tracy Sprinkle, class of 2013, ended up in a building full of elementary school children Thursday afternoon at Save Our Children, a non-profit after-school program on the city’s south side. Starr is related to the organization’s executive director, Lisa Bramhall, so getting a foot in the door was no problem for Starr.

Geared toward at-risk kids, Starr said she knew a visit from both football players to the program would be more than welcomed, possibly inspirational.

She was right.

SNAPSHOT: A CHASE FARRIS OHIO STATE REFRESHER

55220_h.jpg,qitok=ZKMvNMd7.pagespeed.ce.UMR38xXYKZ.jpg

For whatever reason, it took Chase Farris longer than expected to finally get his shot.

Roughly a month before word began surfacing concerning former Buckeye coach Jim Tressel's knowledge of NCAA violations regarding his players profiting off their memorabilia, Farris signed his letter of intent to head to Columbus out of Elyria High School.

"It's been a long time coming," Farris said in February 2011. "Just to sign on the dotted line was a wonderful feeling."

Those wonderful feelings turned sour with Ohio State's eventual internal investigation and the resignation of the man who sold Farris on the idea to play for the Buckeyes. Tressel, the man the now fifth-year senior thought he'd be going to battle with on Saturday afternoons in his early 20s, had to step away before Farris' Buckeye career began.

However, through a pair of coaching transitions, position changes and knee surgery, Farris gutted it and remained a Buckeye. He pushed himself to finally get the opportunity to produce between the lines in a consistent role for the Scarlet and Gray.

"Right tackle is cleared up,” Farris' third collegiate head coach, Urban Meyer, said April 13. “Chase Farris will start if he continues to progress at right tackle.”

A starting spot is all but his, even though he entered the program as a four-star defensive end prior to 2011. Farris switched to offensive line in the fall of 2012, only to head to the other side of the ball the following year as a pile of injuries caused depth issues on the D-line.

"I’ve just been taking it one day at a time trying to get better every day," Farris said this spring.

That simplistic approach won over offensive line coach Ed Warinner a long time ago, but with the injury halting his development and Ohio State's offensive line operating at full bore during its run to the first ever College Football Playoff National Championship, there just wasn't space for him on the field.

AS THE ELDER STATESMAN ON OHIO STATE'S OFFENSIVE LINE, TAYLOR DECKER IS 'BUYING STOCK' IN CHASE FARRIS

56952_h.jpg,qitok=KtJMJKP2.pagespeed.ce.y1EipSu155.jpg

When asked last Thursday at Big Ten Media Days who he felt the most improved player was on Ohio State's team, Taylor Decker took a brief moment to ponder his response.

The pause didn't last long, though. It was almost as if Decker knew the player's name he wanted to say instantly, but wanted to hold out to build the suspense.

"I'm buying a lot of stock in Chase Farris right now," Decker said. "Right now, I’d say that he probably had the best offseason of anybody in our program. He had an awesome offseason and I think he’s just developed, not so much physically which he has, but as a leader."

That's pretty high praise from Decker, the elder statesman on Ohio State's offensive line who is a shoe-in to be named a team captain for 2015. Decker is getting ready to enter his third year as a starter on the offensive line and is projected to be a first-round NFL Draft pick following the season.

It also probably shouldn't come as a surprise Decker selected one of his fellow offensive linemen to answer the question. But the fact he did should help ease the minds of some Buckeyes fans who may have been concerned at the right tackle position.

A Slob is a Good Thing at Ohio State

ChaseFarrisAndMilkshake.jpg

In most walks of life, calling someone a slob is taken as an insult. Try walking into the break room during lunchtime at your job and referring to the biggest guy there as a slob. That likely wouldn’t go over well.

Among the Ohio State football team though, slob is a compliment. If you’re an offensive lineman that is.

“It means the world,” new Buckeye right tackle Chase Farris said when asked about becoming one of the slobs. “The fact that I have four other guys on the line with me that have that much confidence in me to go out there and do what they do, since they’ve already done it at the highest level, and to think that they think that I’m the best fit to be in there with them is just amazing.”

The origin of “slob” at Ohio State goes back a few years to the 2012 team. That line was made up of Jack Mewhort, Andrew Norwell, Corey Linsley, Marcus Hall, and Reid Fragel, who helped paved the way for an undefeated season for the Scarlet and Gray.

Those five guys are now on NFL rosters after creating the slob mentality at Ohio State.

So if it’s no longer an insult, what exactly is a slob for the Buckeyes?

Chase Farris Ready to Start for Buckeyes
Now set as Ohio State's starter at right tackle -- line coach Ed Warinner said he has no concerns about Farris' play despite strong falls from Jamarco Jones and Isaiah Prince

Last year, fifth-year senior Darryl Baldwin emerged as a star along the offensive line after having done nothing during his first four seasons. This year, Chase Farris is in the same situation. Let's hope that he can also find some magic and become an anchor at the right tackle position.

FIGHT TO THE END: OHIO STATE OFFENSIVE TACKLE CHASE FARRIS

65243_h.jpg,qitok=YAd3VmtL.pagespeed.ce.HA8W2s8itb.jpg

Ohio State's 2015 senior class has a chance to win its 50th game over a four-year period New Year's Day in the Fiesta Bowl against Notre Dame. Before kickoff in their final collegiate game, Eleven Warriors will take a brief look back at each player's time in Columbus.

WHERE HE'S FROM
Chase Farris signed with Ohio State in 2011 as four-star offensive tackle/defensive end hybrid out of Elyria, Ohio. When Farris signed his name to the dotted line, he did so thinking he would play for Jim Tressel, the man to which he committed in March 2010.

Much like Farris' Buckeye career, it didn't go to plan.

Farris entered Ohio State as a defensive tackle, a position he played during his redshirt season in 2011. He moved to the offensive line in 2012, a position he held until 2013 when he lost the right tackle battle to sophomore Taylor Decker and an injury to defensive tackle Tommy Schutt forced him back into the defensive trenches. Farris made three tackles that season before a pre-Orange Bowl knee injury sidelined him.

Farris switched back to the offensive line in 2014 and played 270 snaps through all 15 games of Ohio State's championship run—the most snaps for any non-starter on the offensive line.

Farris then slid into the starting right tackle spot vacated by Daryl Baldwin in 2015, a spot he held for the entire year.
