OL Alex Boone (Official Thread)

Alex vs. Texas

All,

Alex got taken to task last week. Keep in mind he was going up against a guy who will likely be playing on Sundays and he is a true Soph.

Alex is going to be the guy for the next three years at this spot and I, for one, cannot wait to see how he improves over the course of his career.

He won't likely face a better DT all this year.

He didnt play that bad, he did have a couple penalties and gave up the only sack, but his run blocking was pretty good.

His only problem I see is not locking on to his blocks. He gets a good initial surge or punch and then the guy is able to get off a little too easy. Same with Pass blocking. Needs a little work with his feet, but he is only a soph.

I'm sorry, but you simply cannot rip this guy for struggling a bit against last week's competition. He will not play a better end this year. Can he improve, oh, absolutely. But when you are playing against someone with that kind of talent, you are going to win some and lose a few as well. Personally, I'm VERY glad that Boone is on our side.

Take another look at our first scoring drive, when the second string line was in there.
We had Ballard, Schaefer, Mitchum, Whaley, Person, and Skinner.
Schaefer was "OK" at LT while there, but there was a noticeable dropoff. Whaley got totally blown up a couple of times. The other guys actually looked pretty good.

That D-Line is the best and deepest we will face all year- by far. If we can not only neutralize them but handle them the way we did Sat night, this is going to be a good O-Line the rest of the year. If teams have to blitz us to get pressure on our passing game, and if they have to load the box to stop our running game - it will be a big year for Mr Smith and Co.

Not ripping him, just pointing out things he needs to do to improve his overall game. I am sure the coaches are telling him that he needs to hold on to his blocks longer. Once he is able to do that he will be a great lineman.

As for best DE, we still have to go against Lamarr Woodley, but he should have improved immensly by then and be ready to go.

Boone was matched up with Brian Robison, who is a very good 275-pound fifth-year senior with "4.6" speed - not an easy assignment for anybody, especially with little or no help. Texas has an excellent defensive line (Okam and Crowder are All Big 12), and the Longhorn defense blitzed on many plays, so Boone was on an island most of the time. Yeah, he had a shaky game, but that was to be expected - an "average" OT would have had a much worse time given the circumstances. Chalk this one up to a learning experience. Alex will be alright....

While I remember Alex having some pass blocking problems a year and a half ago in the Army All Star game, I don't think he did that badly against Texas. Their D Line was very good, and while he made a couple mental errors with false starts, he no doubt did so in anticipation of needing to brace against bull rushes from above average players. I think the stats that there were only three sacks, two of which were clearly Troy holding onto the ball way too long, is testimony that the Oline(s) didn't do badly at all. I was amazed most of the evening how much time Troy in fact had in the pocket to pick out receivers.

Alex...work on foot speed and he will be fine. Orlando Pace is the prototype for a really big guy with excellent foot speed.

Go Bucks!

These problems will improve or else JT (or someone in practice...win his position) will take care of it :osu:

I'm with you on this. They played 10 players on the line and Tim switched from LG to LT a few times.

I understand thats probably the best d-liners they'll play all year but, OSU has some great players pushing for time. So the best will play.

They might put Barton over there if the problems continue . He's the best linemen on the team

Boone played well his first game and made some mental errors that cost him in the second game. That's going to happen to young players against tough competition. It is too early to pass on judgement on young players at this point, before the start of conference play. If anything, I expect him to become more dominant as the season progresses.
