Oklahoma dismisses QB Bomar/NCAA probation

I can't possibly see how they say that about Ohio State, two NCAA investigations revealed nothing.

Well, they choose factors that make their case less severe (sound familiar?) and they point out the Myles Brand has commended their response (sound familiar?).

It would be nice if the NCAA would begin a transparent investigation of the Bush affair and clear the air on that one.
The NCAA doesn't do transparent investigations. This newest information about the Oklahoma investigation came to light because of an open records request. As I explained in the SC thread, this is why people believe that nothing has been investigate with SC.

From the OU link in my previous post:

The documents, which were submitted to the Committee on Infractions in advance of a hearing April 14 in Indianapolis, Ind., were obtained Friday by The Oklahoman through an open-records request.

I've highlighted some intersesting quotes from Quinn, the other Sooner who was kicked off the team the same time as Bomar. Quinn transferred to Montana, and is giving the amount he received to charity.

In the article, he later says that he meant players on teams all around the country, but that seems like tap-dancing to me, after the way he said "there's people on the team ...".

Ex-Sooner says dismissal was unfair

Offensive lineman J.D. Quinn: 'All I did was take cash'

TULSA, Okla. (AP) -- A former Oklahoma football player who was kicked off the team with quarterback Rhett Bomar says he believes his dismissal was unfair.

Former offensive lineman J.D. Quinn and Bomar were permanently dismissed from the team the day before the start of practice last fall for taking money for hours they did not work at a Norman auto dealership.

...

"All I did was take cash," Quinn said. "I didn't break any laws and I get kicked off the team, but there's people on the team that are breaking laws and failing drug tests and stuff like that, and there's nobody getting kicked off the team for that type of stuff."

An AP article following Oklahoma's meeting with the NCAA - the article consists primarily of quotes from the University's President. Despite being restricted from commenting about the specifics of the meeting, he puts a favorable spin on things.

Oklahoma defends itself against football allegations

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) ? University President David Boren emerged from an NCAA Committee on Infractions hearing on Saturday believing Oklahoma got a "totally fair" opportunity to defend itself against allegations it failed to adequately monitor athletes' employment at a Norman car dealership.

Boren said most of the 4?-hour meeting was spent on the topic of a "failure to monitor" charge against the university, which has dismissed three players ? including starting quarterback Rhett Bomar ? from the football team for taking extra pay from the dealership.

"I would describe it as totally fair. We had every opportunity to present our case," Boren said in a telephone interview with The Associated Press following the hearing in Indianapolis.

In its written response to the NCAA allegations, Oklahoma said it strongly disagreed with the failure to monitor charge and claimed the rules violations would not have been uncovered if not for the university's "aggressive investigation."

Boren said Saturday that the NCAA restricted him from giving specifics about the meeting's contents.

Looks like OU forced to forfeit every win from 2005 season. Also 2 schollies gone for 2 years and 3 years probation.

Edit: Correction, not forfeit. The games OU won just do not exist any more. 0-4

Edit 2: The article:

NewsOK: NCAA: OU must forfeit 2005 wins

INDIANAPOLIS — The Oklahoma football team will vacate all of its wins from the 2005 season as punishment for major violations, the NCAA Committee on Infractions announced today.

Aside from the vacated wins, OU's penalties.
• Two additional years of probation, extended the period through 2010.
• The loss of two scholarships through the 2009-10 season.
• A reduction by one of the number of coaches who can recruit off campus.
• A public reprimand and censure.
• A disassociation with the dealership manager for five years. The committee found OU "made several mistakes in a narrow, but significant area — the employment of football student-athletes at the dealership, which resulted in a breakdown of its monitoring. When such mistakes result in significant violations of NCAA legislation, as in this case, a finding of failure to monitor is appropriate and justified.”

Espn is saying forfit, not just vacated.

The Oklahoma football program must forfeit its wins from the 2005 season and will lose two scholarships for the 2008-09 and 2009-10 school years.

The penalties, announced Wednesday by the NCAA, stem from a case involving two players, including the Sooners' starting quarterback, who were kicked off the team for being paid for work they had not performed at a Norman car dealership.

The Sooners went 8-4 and beat Oregon in the Holiday Bowl to end the 2005 season. Records from that season involving quarterback Rhett Bomar and offensive lineman J.D. Quinn must be vacated, the NCAA said, and coach Bob Stoops' career record will be amended to reflect the forfeitures, dropping it from 86-19 in eight seasons to 78-27.

NCAA Press Release
Penalties for the violations include adding two years to the university's current probationary period, a reduction in allowable financial aid, and a vacation of records for the 2005 season including a bowl game victory.

What do records do on vacation?

I read soonerfans earlier, and I know that they were expecting much less.

Even if only eight wins are switched to losses, for an elite team that really hurts the old all-time (or other era) win percentage, I imagine. . . (or hope? It may drop than one place?) Stoops' win percentage drops from about 82% to 74%. . .

Did ESPN screw up with the forfeit/vacate distinction?
