It's really nothing more than a slap on the wrist, but since the NCAA is spineless, it's actually more than I was expecting.

I thought the categorization (failure to monitor) was valid. The violations were certainly serious, yet didn't warrant the death penalty.

The penalties do have a limited scope. Two schollies is meaningful, but it's only for a two year period, and won't have a big effect on the program.
The other things the NCAA can really do to punish the program hurt other members of the conference (no Bowl, no TV coverage), so they're very reluctant to impose those.

Any post season penalties? Will this affect upcoming bowl possibilities?

If I were Landry Jones,Jermie Calhoun,Stephen Good,Justin Jihnson,RJ Washingtion,Ben Habern,Joseph iboloye, DeJuan Miller, (Damn Oklahoma has a great class), and the other verbals I would seriously open up my recruiting because this stuff may still change after appeals or whatever.

Oklahoma's Stoops gets preferential treatment from media
Commentary
Keith Britton
Issue date: 7/19/07

Not all things are looking dim in Norman, Okla. these days - At least not for Oklahoma football coach Bob Stoops.

Just a year after the Sooners program dismissed quarterback Rhett Bomar and offensive lineman J.D. Quinn for being paid for work they did not perform, the NCAA forced the program to eliminate all wins from the 2005 season as well as two scholarships for the 2008-09 and 2009-10 seasons.

What the Sooners did not seem to lose was the credibility of its coach.

Despite the NCAA coming down on the program and delivering some form of punishment, Stoops seems to have come out of this situation with barely a nick on his reputation.

While several college coaches have largely lost their credibility among the college football world in the last 20 years or so for similar sanctions against their programs, Stoops seems to have fallen into a different category with fans and the media.

This is about having 3 jerseys with the recruits' high school numbers hanging in the locker room when they visited. None of the 3 went to Oklahoma.

I believe it was only the numbers because Oklahoma didn't use player names on the jerseys last season - they are now going back to having names on their jerseys.

Oklahoma wants secondary violation off its NCAA record

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) ? After consulting with a fellow Big 12 Conference school, the University of Oklahoma wants the NCAA to strike a self-reported secondary rules violation from its record.

Oklahoma originally reported that it had broken NCAA rules when it hung jerseys with three prospects' high school numbers in the Sooners' locker room when the recruits came to visit.

The university's executive director of compliance subsequently sent a letter to the NCAA asking to have that violation removed, according to documents obtained Friday through an open records request by the Associated Press.

The compliance official, Jason Leonard, wrote that Oklahoma heard from compliance staff at Missouri seeking clarification after they'd read an AP story published June 12 detailing secondary violations that had been self-reported by Oklahoma.

Leonard wrote that he was informed that Missouri ? in a similar situation ? had been told by a former NCAA official in 2005 that no secondary violation had occurred in that instance.

Oklahoma files appeal to reclaim wins taken by NCAA

TULSA, Okla.
-- Oklahoma has filed its official appeal requesting the NCAA overturn an infractions committee ruling that would strip the Sooners of eight wins because of rules violations involving former starting quarterback Rhett Bomar.

"We just got acknowledgment that it's been received and in process," university President David Boren said Wednesday following a board of regents meeting.

This is how it works at OU. Team lose a game? Write a letter! This makes the eight games from 2005 they want reversed, the Oregon game from 2006, and I'm sure somebody has sent some strongly worded emails regarding the title game against USC back in the '04 season when Reggie Bush suited up. :roll2:

OK. So am I the only person in the US that sees a great big fucking red flag from the fact that Adrian Peterson was driving a Lexus from Big Red Motors?

ESPN - Gundy quiet, but Cowboys trample Bomar in return vs. Big 12 foe - NCAA College Football Recap

"I didn't look at it any different. Everybody wants to make a big deal about me coming back to Oklahoma, but it's not like I'm from here," Bomar said. "So it's just a one-time thing."

Bomar said it was "ironic" that Sam Houston State's schedule included a game against his former team's primary rival.

"I think they're a solid team," Bomar said. "I have a lot of respect for those guys. They said some nice things to me after the game, and I wish them a lot of luck the rest of the year, especially against that other school here."

Someone's bitter.

Bob Stoops just had his winning percentage go up. He's 97-22 (.815). Now they can focus on getting that on-side kick in Autzen Stadium changed.

NCAA will restore wins from Oklahoma's 2005 season

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) ? Oklahoma will have its wins reinstated from its 2005 Holiday Bowl season after an NCAA appeals committee partially overturned its ruling in the infractions case involving former quarterback Rhett Bomar.

The NCAA Infractions Appeals Committee released a ruling Friday that Oklahoma should not have been found guilty of separate violations for failing to detect that football players were working at a Norman car dealership and failing to monitor those students' employment.

In overturning the violation related to detecting the players' employment, the appeals committee reinstated the Sooners' wins from their 8-4 season in 2005.
