WOW! What a match. OSU wrestled about as well as possible. They just took it to Iowa and appeared to want it more. Great effort from all ten guys. It will be very interesting to see how Iowa rebounds against Penn State tomorrow.

125 - No. 2 Matt McDonough (Iowa) DEC No. 15 Johnni Dijulius (OSU), 5-2

Well, Johnni certainly doesn't have a major knee injury. Coming into this dual, McDonough had won 15 of his 20 matches with bonus, with his four other decisions (he was one loss) all coming by six. Holding this to a three point match was huge for JD and a great way to set the tone. Johnni was actually incredibly close to getting an escape in the second, but McDonough did a great job to hold on to his foot.

133 - No. 4 Logan Stieber (OSU) DEC No. 2 Tony Ramos (Iowa), 7-0

Absolute domination from Logan. Ramos is very very good and Logan had no problems in this match at all. The two were very even on their feet, but on the mat it was all Stieber. Scoreless after the first, Ramos started down. Logan worked him over for a three-point near fall and rode him out the entire period. Logan escaped almost immediately to start the third effectively going up 5-0 and then got a late take down to finish the scoring. This now gives Logan strong wins over both Ramos and Carter. Great win.

141 - No. 7 Hunter Stieber (OSU) DEC No. 3 Montell Marion (Iowa), 4-2

Not to be outdone by his brother, Hunter followed up with a big win. Hunter was the aggressor and scored the early TD to go into the second up 2-1. A technical violation on Marion followed soon after by a Hunter escape put Hunter up 4-1 heading into the third. A Marion escape made it 4-2, which would be final. Hunter did a great job of fighting off a Marion attack in the third, something you don't see in the score buy was a huge key to the match.

149 - No. 16 Cam Tessari (OSU) DEC Mike Kelly (Iowa), 7-4

Cam opened up with a nice throw for a TD and reversed Kelly after being taken down himself to end the first up 4-3. Escaped to open the third to go up 5-4 and then countered late off a desperate Kelly shot to get to the 7-4 margin. Solid win. At this point, Monroeville High School 9, University of Iowa 3.

157 - Josh Demas (OSU) DEC Derek St. John (Iowa), 7-3

Demas was in on an early shot that St. John somehow fought off. On the restart, Demas was lightening quick, picking St. John's ankle for the TD and forcing St. John to take injury time. DSJ looked to be in serious pain, but toughed it out and looked surprisingly ok the rest of the match, though he really didn't take any shots. DSJ kept pushing forward, but Josh was shooting and scored another TD to up 4-1 heading into the third. A DSJ TD made it 4-3 and 5-3 after a Demas escape. Just like Cam, Josh scored a late TD to make it 7-3 and score a huge upset (big win even if DSJ was not at 100%). Bucks up 12-3 at the break.

165 - Derek Garcia (OSU) DEC No. 6 Mike Evans (Iowa), 6-5

This looked to be a sure loss, as Garcia had been handled by Kokesh, while Evans had just dominated Kokesh, but not so. Garcia got an immediate TD and then picked up another to lead 4-2 after the first. Starting from neutral, Derek registered another TD, as Evans looked very susceptible to Garcia's low shots. Garcia built up riding time but was reversed by Evans and led 6-4 going into the third. An Evans escape made it 6-5, but Derek held on for the win. Huge huge win for him. He has been looking better of late and this was a massive step forward. He gets David Taylor next, so the competition will only be tougher. Great to see Garcia still wrestling tough after a rough start to his college career.

174 - No. 9 Ethen Lofthouse (Iowa) DEC Joe Grandominico (OSU), 7-1

With Magrum still out, Tom Ryan opted to bump Helfin up to 184, leaving 157 pounder Joe Grandominico to face off against at top 10 guy with 17 pounds on him. The result? A spirited effort from Grandominco to keep Lofthouse from getting bonus. This was a win for OSU.

184 - No. 8 Nick Heflin (OSU) DEC Vinnie Wagner (Iowa), 7-4

Heflin looked pretty small compared to Wagner, but he was simply a better wrestler. In typical Heflin fashion, nothing happened in the first. Nick escaped immediately to the start the second, while Wagner did the same in the third making it 1-1. Heflin was then able to counter off a Wanger shot to get the TD and go up 3-1. From there it was all Heflin as he registered two more TDs to essentially lock up the match for OSU.

197 - Andrew Campolattano (OSU) DEC Grant Gambrall (Iowa), 8-6

Camp came out aggressive, pushing the action and getting an early TD (see a theme here? OSU really pushed the early action in each match they won). Camp got a little sloppy and gave up an easy TD, but was able to escape to go into the second tied 3-3. Camp started down in the second and got the reversal to lead 5-4 heading into the third. Gambrall escaped to tie it up at 5, but Camp got the TD that good wrestlers need to get in the third to go up 7-5. Gambrall escaped to move within one, but then gave Camp another point when he grabbed his headgear. Gambrall has stuggled this year, but was third at Nationals last year and actually looked better in this match, so this was a very nice win for Camp.

HWT - Blake Rasing (Iowa) DEC No. 15 Peter Capone (OSU), 6-2

Rasing, last year's B1G champ, go the start over No. 9 Telford, who lost three in a row. He had a huge size advantage on Pete and it showed. Pete was down 2-1 after the first and 3-1 after the second. He escaped to start the third to pull within 3-2. He shot on Rasing and then Rasing just kind of plopped down on top of him and that was that. It's going to be tough for Pete against these really big guys, but he continues to fight really well.

21-9! OSU may not beat Iowa at B1Gs or Nationals, but they won yesterday, and they haven't done that since 1966. Iowa had won 84 straight duals until losing on criteria to #2 Oklahoma State a couple weeks ago. Incredible win, especially with Magrum out of the line up and the Bucks extreme youth. The rest of this year should be extremely fun, but they next few years we should really be seeing something special.

Ryan is doing a fantastic job with the program...I had little interest in OSU (just admitting it) when Hellickson was there. Under Ryan, kinda makes me wish I would've rolled around for OSU. Either way, great win.

Attendence 5,684? Ouch!

Would love to see some more support from the students for this "thing" that Ryan has put together. You'd think the students would catch on to this. Wrestling is a "rowdy" sport where the fans can really get into it. If you don't understand whats going on, ask the guy next to you.

Anyway, great win for the Buckeyes.

"Monroeville to Wrestling" is getting pretty close to "Glenville to Football.":oh:

Peace

Hunter Stieber Big Ten Wrestler of the Week

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Hunter Stieber, a freshman on the No. 7 Ohio State wrestling team, was named wrestler of the week, the Big Ten Conference announced Tuesday. Stieber, a native of Monroeville, Ohio, downed No. 3 Montell Marion, 4-2, en route to helping the Buckeyes defeat No. 2 Iowa, 21-9, Friday night in front of 5,684 fans in St. John Arena.

Stieber, who moved to sixth from seventh place in the Intermatwrestle.com polls Tuesday, limited Marion, a two-time senior All-American, to just two escapes in the match. With the win Stieber improved to 18-3 overall and 4-1 in the league.

This is Stieber's first-career Big Ten Wrestler of the Week honor and the fourth for Ohio State this season.

Predictions...

125 - No. 8 Nico Megaludis DEC No. 15 Johnni Dijulius - 0-3

Johnni looked very solid against McDonough last weekend, but Nico looked better. Both are excellent defensive wrestlers, but I think Nico has a better offense. I look for this to be low scoring match with an edge to Meagaluids, but one that Johnni can absolutely win (and will likely have to for OSU to win the dual).

133 - No. 3 Logan Stieber PIN Frank Martellotti - 6-3

Martellotti was dominated by Ramos before being pinned last weekend. The only difference I see is that I think Logan will pin Martellotti earlier. Even if no pin, bonus should be a guarantee.

141 - No. 6 Hunter Stieber DEC Bryan Pearsall - 9-6

I see this as a bit of a trap match for Hunter. Pearsall is decent and Hunter has seemed to "wrestle down" to his competition a bit this year. I'd like to think Hunter will be super focused knowing that this one of the few matches OSU may win in this dual. If Hunter is on his game, he can easily get bonus.

149 - No. 1 Frank Molinaro PIN Alex Gordon - 9-12

My understanding is that OSU will hold Tessari out to allow some injuries to heal up and get him ready for the end of the season. Not sure who will go for OSU in his place, but I'll guess Gordon. Doesn't really matter, as Molinaro should dominate whoever steps on the mat here. If Cam does wrestle, Molinaro is still a heavy favorite, though the margin of victory will be less, and you never know if Cam can do something funky and get a surprise pin.

157 - No. 7 Dylan Alton DEC No. 20 Josh Demas - 9-15

I really want to pick Demas for the upset here, as he has looked great as of late, but I think Alton is the safe choice, especially at home. Regardless, this will be a great test to see where Josh is at right now.

165 - No. 1 David Taylor MDEC Derek Garcia - 9-19

Just like Demas, Garcia has also really turned it on lately. Unfortuately for him, he runs into David Taylor here. Really just not getting pinned or teched here will be good performance I think. Garcia is pretty bad on the bottom so we will see if Taylor is content to rack up riding time or if he will do the takedown and cut routine.

174 - No. 2 Ed Ruth DEC No. 8 Nick Heflin - 9-22

This should be a very interesting match. Ruth has been on fire, while Heflin, not so much, but I'd like to think Nick shows up here. Ruth is the heavy favorite, but I think if Nick wrestles well he can keep this close.

184 No. 2 Quentin Wright PIN Craig Thomas - 9-28

OSU held Magrum out against Iowa, so I don't see why they would bring him back here in a dual they are highly likely to lose against an opponent the caliber of Wright. I think they would rather ease him back in to competition. That means Thomas goes up against the defending national champ, and that won't work out well for OSU. If Magrum does wrestle, I'll take Wright by a major, as I have to assume C.J. will be a bit rusty.

197 - No. 12 Morgan McIntosh DEC No. 20 Andrew Campolattano - 9-31

This should be a great match, as it pits last years top two upper weight recruits in the country. Camp will have a size advantage, and may be a bit better on his feet, but I think McIntosh is more well rounded and will have the advantages of being at home and likely the momentum of coming off a string of PSU victories. Should be a close one whichever way it goes.

HWT - No. 6 Cameron Wade DEC No. 16 Peter Capone - 9-34

Capone hasn't won in a while, but he's been facing top competition every week. That doesn't change for him against Wade, and I see him losing another match in the typical 6-2ish style.

Last week I was rather cautious in my picks for the Iowa match, and that obviously (and happily) didn't turn out too well. But that same Iowa team went to Penn State and got drilled and I really don't see OSU doing too much better, especially on the road. This is not a good matchup for OSU, as Logan and Hunter (our best two) face Penn State's worst two. Still, there will be some very good tests in this match, as the only people I see who really have no chance are Gordon (if he wrestles), Garcia, and Thomas (if he wrestles). PSU is certainly the favorite in many of the other matches, but OSU should be able to hang tough in those.

Impressive call.

It was impressive, but I think he gave PSU 3 points by mistake when he covered the 141 pound class. His call should have totalled up to 9-31. But I'm repping that post anyway. :wink2:

meatchicken comes a calling

With January in the rearview mirror, Ohio State wrestling coach Tom Ryan is still trying to get a grip on his team?s talent level.
Ryan saw his team go 2-3 that month, including the program?s first victory over Iowa since 1966. Nine days later, though, the Buckeyes lost 34-9 at Penn State, leaving Ryan to compare his team with January gym enrollees.

?Can you do that every morning, or is it a once-in-a-while thing?? he said. ?When it?s all the time, the law of consistency is in effect. It?s not yet. The law of inconsistency is in effect for us right now.?
The sixth-ranked Buckeyes will continue to seek that answer on Friday with a home meet against No. 8 Michigan at which assistant football coach Luke Fickell will serve as honorary coach.

Although freshman Hunter Stieber said the rivalry on the mat does not equal the one in football, the match will serve as another chance for Ohio State to get back on track.

?We still don?t want to lose to them,? Stieber said. ?It?s still a rivalry, but not like Iowa because they?re always on top. Michigan, they?re good, but they?re never one of the top teams. We?re trying to prepare like we did for Iowa. All week, we were hyped up for it and ready, and then once we stepped on the mat, we were ready to go.?

Ryan said the week of practice after the Iowa victory showed no signs of an imminent letdown. Although the loss to the Nittany Lions resulted in a gamut of excuses for the team?s performance, Ryan was able to draw one conclusion ? and it came from an earlier loss against Iowa.

Sophomore Joe Grandominico turned in a scrappy performance against the Hawkeyes, moving up two weight classes to take on Ethen Lofthouse. Grandominico lost 7-1, but he inspired his teammates.

Such a performance was missing against Penn State.

?You do not need to be an expert in the sport of wrestling to be able to spot passion,? Ryan said. ?There was none of it to be found at Penn State, and that?s what frustrated me the most.?

No. 6 Ohio State (9-3 overall; 3-3 Big Ten) vs. No. 12 Michigan (6-3 overall; 4-2 Big Ten)

Live Updates: OhioStateBuckeyes.com and twitter.com/wrestlingbucks

Let's see if I can figure out that 3+0=3 and not 6 this time...

125 ? No. 16 Johnni Dijulius MDEC Grant Pizzo - 4-0

After facing a very tough slate of competition thus far in 2012, Johnni will get some respite with Pizzo, who is pretty bad. This should be an easy decision, but bonus could prove very important in this dual and I think Johnni will go after and get it.

133 ? No. 3 Logan Stieber PIN No. 16 Zac Stevens - 10-0

Stevens is not slouch and even put Logan in a 5 point whole the last time they met, though Logan still ended up with the major. Like I said above, bonus could be huge in this dual, and I think Logan will go hard after the pin.

141 ? No. 1 Kellen Russell DEC No. 6 Hunter Stieber - 10-3

Hunter is 1-0 so far against Russell, the defending national champ's only loss over the past two seasons. I don't think that win was a fluke at all, but odds are with Russell here in a close one. Hunter seems to shine is these big matches, though (Russell round 1, Marion), and if he wins here I may never pick against him again.

149 ? No. 7 Eric Grajales DEC No. 14 Cam Tessari - 10-6

Grajales is the favorite, but if Cam is close to 100%, which I believe he is (don't think he'd be wrestling if he wasn't), I think an upset is definitely in play. Cam was laboring a lot in the third period against Kelly, so conditioning could play a role here. Should be an exciting match, as any Tessari match usually is.

157 ? No. 20 Josh Demas DEC Brandon Zeerip - 13-6

If Demas wrestles well, he wins, its as simple as that. The key is that he has to be the "good" Demas and not the guy you think might be asleep.

165 ? No. 14 Dan Yates DEC Derek Garcia 13-9

Garcia has been improved of late, but Yates has put together a very solid season and should be favored here. If Garcia can finish his shots and ride a little bit (like against Evans) he will have a good shot to pull the upset. If he can't or gets countered, not so much.

174 ? No. 8 Justin Zeerip DEC No. 7 Nick Heflin - 13-12

I want to pick Heflin to win, I really do, especially with the home mat advantage, but he hasn't shown any reason this year to think he will win. He's been great at beating guys when he is the favorite, even when they are pretty good. But against equal or better competition, he has nothing to show. Here's hoping that changes tonight.

184 ? No. 10 C.J. Magrum DEC Hunter Collins - 16-12

Magrum should be back tonight, and no better opponent to start his comeback against than Collins. If Magrum hadn't been hurt I would be predicting bonus, but I think coming off the long layoff he will take the solid and safe decision.

197 ? No. 20 Andrew Campolattano DEC No. 15 Max Huntley - 19-12

While I didn't show any faith in Heflin, I will with Camp. I've gotta assume Tom Ryan really got on him about being aggressive this week and I think it will show up at home, much the same as i the Gambrall match. If Hunter can't beat Russell again, Camp or Heflin winning will be crucial for the Bucks if they want to win the dual.

HWT ? No. 10 Ben Apland DEC No. 18 Peter Capone - 19-15

Capone beat Apland back in Vegas, but I really think the grind of a) wrestling top 15 guys every week and b) being at a large size disadvantage is really starting to weigh on Capone. He never quits though, so you never know.

As it stands, I have the matches split 5-5, so bonus will be the key. I think Logan will get bonus, even if no pin, and I think JD has the next highest probability of getting bonus on either team, so that is really in OSU's favor. JD, Logan, and Magrum are virtually assured of winning, while scUM really has no one you can bank on for a win. This one could easily go 18 - 14 the other way, though. Should be a great dual!
