Ohio State Wrestling (2015/2017/2018 B1G Champs, 2015 National Champs, 2019 National Runners-up)

Does Monroeville have anymore Stiebers? If there are any more brothers coming up, or even a sister! With that kinda family, my bet is that she'd be able to pin more than one male in her weight class. May be the 106 that we've been looking for......

Sounds like the team is young, but the coach is recruiting very well. He's building a powerhouse to come for OSU, and that's great. Thanks again, I enjoy the rehash of the meets, the B10 channel doesn't seem to carry OSU wrestling, just the 'other' members.

PS, what happened to Notre Dame Chief?

No. 6 Ohio State (7-2; 1-2 Big Ten) 13 at No. 3 Minnesota (5-2; 2-0 Big Ten) 24
2 p.m. ET Sunday Jan. 8, 2012
Sports Pavilion
Minneapolis, Minn.

174 ? No. 11 Logan Storley DEC No. 5 Nick Heflin, 4-2

Just an awful way to start the match, as pretty much any chance of an upset went out the window with this loss. Heflin really needs to show a greater sense of urgency of trying to do anything, otherwise he leaves himself open to loses like this against quality opponents.

184 ? No. 8 Kevin Steinhaus TECH FALL Craig Thomas, 18-3

Magrum still out with injury, so this was to be expected.

197 ? No. 3 Sonny Yohn DEC Andrew Campolattano, 5-1

Not a bad result here. Camp has more physical skills than Yohn, but Yohn is a senior and Camp a freshman. Yohn does what he does well and is tough to crack. Good weekend for Camp.

125 ? No. 1 Zach Sanders MAJ DEC No. 15 Johnni Dijulius, 20-10

This match started off well, as Johnni was doing a good job of frustrating Sanders. JD led 3-2 after a late first period takedown and hung tough through the second period. He entered the third down 8-6, then the wheels fell off and it looked like he had nothing left as Sanders scored TD after TD. Ahh well.

133 ? Chris Dardanes DEC No. 2 Logan Stieber, 5-3

Ugggh. Logan was the aggressor the entire match, but Dardenes defended very well. Logan finally secured a late first period TD, but as the match wore on Dardanes was able to get in on Logan's leg when countering Logan's attack. Logan did a decent job of fighting him off, but Dardanes was able to get a TD as the match expired for the big win.

For those who don't follow too closely, don't think that Logan lost to an "unranked" opponent. The only reason Dardanes is unranked is because only one wrestler per team gets ranked and David Thorn is ranked #8 for Minnesota. However, Dardanes won the Southern Scuffle while Thorn was third, so Dardanes got the start and the huge win. He is a very good opponent.

141 ? No. 6 Hunter Stieber DEC No. 15 Nick Dardanes, 11-8

Really really nice win here for Hunter. OSU hadn't won a match at this point, his brother had just been upset, and Hunter was coming off a bad loss two days earlier. But he came out aggressive, looked good, and controlled the whole match against a solid opponent.

149 ? No. 16 Cam Tessari PINNED No. 9 Dylan Ness

What an exciting match! Ness scored an early TD and then was awarded a quick 3 point NF. Cam reversed and got some backs himself to move within 5-4. Ness escaped and registered another TD when Cam got the pin. It may not have actually been a pin, but regardless would have been a 4-5 point move for Cam. Nice win.

157 ? Josh Demas MAJ DEC Alec Ortiz, 13-5

Ortiz isn't too good, but this was a nice win for Demas, regardless. He was aggressive and looked confident in what he was doing in registering the major. Something to build from.

165 ? No. 6 Cody Yohn DEC Derek Garcia, 5-3

I think this was a big step forward for Garcia. He obviously has a ways to go, but he looked better than I've seen him, especially against an opponent as good as Yohn. Derek got in on Yohn's leg in the first but couldn't finish and Yohn capitalized with the counter and TD, proceeding to ride Garica for over 2 minutes to close out the first. Must get better on bottom. Yohn escaped to start the second and go up 3-0 before Garcia was able to get in the leg after a few good previous shots. The TD made it 3-2. Yohn escaped to move up 4-2 and then Garcia got a point when Yohn was hit for stalling. Garcia fought hard for the TD to tie (Yohn had the riding time point locked up), but just couldn't get it.

Overall, this started out ugly, but ended on a very positive note. If OSU's two captains don't get upset, they actually pull the upset and win this dual. What a difference a year makes (I'll probably be saying this next year too).

No. 8 Ohio State 27 vs. Purdue 10
7 p.m. Thursday Jan. 12, 2012
St. John Arena
Columbus, Ohio
Match started at: 125
Attendance: 1271

http://www.ohiostatebuckeyes.com/sports/m-wrestl/spec-rel/011212aac.html

125 - Bo Touris DEC Luke Schroeder 15-6

Touris got the nod tonight over JD, who may have a major injury, but hopefully just healing up for the Iowa match. Regardless, nice performance from Bo. Schroder isn't good, but stepping into the lineup and getting a major is always great.

133 - No. 4 Logan Stieber PINNED No. 8 Cash? Quiroga

Quiroga may be a bit over ranked, but great to see Logan bounce back with quick pin.

141 - No. 7 Hunter Stieber DEC Nick Lawrence 4-3

Hunter found himself behind 2-1, but came back to eke out the win. Not great, but avoided disaster. Moving on.

149 - No. 13 Ivan Lopouchanski DEC Alex Gordon 7-2

Cam was out as well, and Gordon did well to keep it to a decision against Lopouchanski.

157 - No. 20 Tommy Churchard DEC T.J. Rigel 9-6

Subbing for Demas, Rigel acquitted himself quite well.

165 - Derek Garcia DEC. Kyle Mosier 8-4

Good win for Garica over a solid opponent. He seems to be moving in the right direction.

174 - No. 8 Nick Heflin DEC Drake Stein 15-6

Nice to Helfin open things up, regardless if the opponent isn't good.

184 - No. 19 Braden Atwood DEC Craig Thomas 9-1

Magrum can't get back soon enough.

197 - Andrew Campolattano DEC Justin Dinius 18-6

Camp put on TD clinic here.

HWT - No. 17 Peter Capone DEC Roger Vukobratovich 4-2

Nice to see Pete pick up a W against a solid opponent after dropping some close matches to very difficult competition.

Logan Stieber--Big Ten Co-Wrestler of the Week

COLUMBUS, Ohio? Logan Stieber, a redshirt freshman on the No. 8 Ohio State wrestling team, was named Big Ten Co-Wrestler of the Week the conference announced Tuesday. It is Stieber?s third-career weekly honor. Stieber shares the award with Penn State?s Ed Ruth.

A native of Monroeville, Ohio, Stieber pinned No. 8 Cash? Quiroga of Purdue in 1:12 to record his team-leading 10th pin of the season en route to the Buckeyes? 27-10 win in St. John Arena Jan. 12. With an 18-1 overall record, including a 3-1 conference ledger, Stieber has scored bonus points in 15 of his matches. Stieber, ranked fourth in the country at 133 pounds, also boasts a 9-1 dual record.

Stieber and the No. 8 Buckeyes (8-2; 2-2 Big Ten) will host No. 2 Iowa (9-1; 4-0 Big Ten) at 7 p.m. Friday in St. John Arena. The match will air live on BTN.com and Buckeye fans are encouraged to wear white to White Out the Hawkeyes.

No. 7 Ohio State (8-2; 2-2 Big Ten) vs. No. 2 Iowa (9-1; 4-0 Big Ten)
7 p.m., Friday, Jan. 20, 2012
St. John Arena
Columbus, Ohio
Broadcast: BTN.com
Live Stats: OhioStateBuckeyes.com

Why this isn't on TV is beyond me. BTN is showing the Purdue/Wisconsin match instead, which will not be good. Makes no sense. Anyway, on to predictions...

125: No. 2 Matt McDonough FALL No. 15 Johnni DiJulius 0-6

DiJulius is rumored to have a serious knee injury and may not even wrestle. If Touris wrestles this is almost a sure pin or tech fall, and an injured DiJulius probably won't fare much better. If JD wrestles and is healthy, I'll go with a major here.

133: No. 2 Tony Ramos DEC No. 4 Logan Stieber 0-9

This should be a great match and could easily go either way. Ramos has been hot, knocking off Oliver and Logan has looked a bit flat lately. Dardanes was able to frustrate Logan and I think Ramos can do the same, only he is better than Dardanes. Will not be the least bit surprised to see Logan win, though. Should be very close either way. Perhaps a good home crowd can help out?

141: No. 3 Montell Marion DEC No. 7 Hunter Stieber 0-12

Hunter looked real bad against Sueflohn, but came back strong against Dardanes and then eeked out a win against Purdue. I absolutely believe Hunter can win this, especially as Marion has looked a bit out of sorts this year, but I'm still taking MM's experience in this one. Should be a great match.

149: No. 16 Cam Tessari DEC Mike Kelly 3-12

Kelly is no slouch, but I think Cam wins this one. Cam did sit out last week, so maybe there is an injury concern, but I have no real knowledge of that so I'm going with this result.

157: No. 2 Derek St. John DEC Josh Demas 3-15

A lot of unknowns here. Demas sat out last week, so not sure if he is hurt. St. John has missed most of the season, but is rumored to be back this week, but not sure what kind of shape he's in. If he is 100% this may be a major. But if St. John is out and Demas is healthy, I like Demas to win a close match of Nick Moore.

165: No. 6 Mike Evans MDEC Derek Garcia 3-19

Evans has been on fire lately, with a big win over Kokesh the highlight. Garcia has been looking better, but Evans will be relentless and I don't know if Garica will have an answer.

174: No. 9 Ethan Lofthouse DEC No. 8 Nick Heflin 3-22

This is a match Heflin should win, but they way he's been wrestling (i.e. no urgency to go anything) I don't know that he will. Iowa is always on the offensive, so he is going to have to score some points somehow. Should be another close one, regardless. Would be a very nice win for Nick to hopefully kick start him in the right direction.

184: No. 10 C.J. Magrum DEC Vinnie Wagner 6-22

Magrum has been out for a while now with his hamstring injury but is supposed to be back. If not, Thomas loses to Wagner. This could still be in doubt if Magrum is out of shape.

197: Andrew Campolattano DEC Grant Gambrall 9-22

Gambrall was 3rd in the country at 184 last year, but has been awful this year at 197. Camp has been looking tough recently, but still needs to get over this hump of consistently beating solid but not great competition like Gambrall. At home in a big match would be a great time to start. I think Camp will show more desire than Gambrall and that will propel him to the win.

285: No. 12 Bobby Telford DEC No. 15 Peter Capone 9-25

Telford has lost four in a row I think, but all against good competition. This will probably be a tight match (see a theme here?) but I think Telford has a edge. Would be a really nice win for Capone.

Overall, there looks to be lots of close matches in this one and should be a fantastic dual even the final score doesn't reflect it. OSU could pull a 16-15 upset or could lose big as I have predicted. Either way it will be exciting (though, let's be honest, the upset will be WAY more exciting). Where the match starts could also be big. Say it starts at 184 and OSU can win 2 of those 3 matches at 184, 197, and HVY, suddenly there is lots of momentum heading into those tossup matches which might give OSU and edge. We'll see.

Major upset in the making!! Through 5 matches, Ohio State (#8) over Iowa (#2) 12-3. The Stiebers both upset higher ranked wrestlers, along with Josh Demas. Remaining 5 matches will be spectacular. Could be a huge win for the program and for Tom Ryan.

Not just a major upset of #8 over #2; but also the symbolic value of finally beating Iowa. And not just an upset, but a dominating victory (winning 7 of 10 matches). Congrats to Tom Ryan on the signature win and to the Buckeye grapplers for showing your stuff. As a side note, there were zero bonus points in this dual - haven't seen that too many times before. Shows how tough each of these wins were. Damn!!

Great stuff for sure, Iowa is the golden standard to beat and we did resoundly. No bonus points is crazy though, tons of tough wrestling.

Great win by the Grapplers. Those Monroeville kids feed off of each other, great to see the Stiebers both win, then Cam come through as well, then followed up by nice wins by Demas and Garcia, great job guys, keep it up :oh:
