Ohio State Wrestling (2015/2017/2018 B1G Champs, 2015 National Champs, 2019 National Runners-up)

Nov. 8, 2011

COLUMBUS, Ohio? Logan Stieber, a member of the 13th-ranked Ohio State wrestling team, was named Big Ten Wrestler of the Week, the conference announced Tuesday. A redshirt-freshman, Stieber went 4-0 at the Eastern Michigan Open Nov. 4 en route to the 133-pound title. It is the first conference weekly honor of Stieber?s career.

Stieber, the fourth-ranked wrestler in the nation, scored bonus points in each of his matches, including a pair of pins in a total time of 2:43. Additionally, the Monroeville, Ohio, native posted a 15-2 major decision against eighth-ranked Cashe Quiroga of Purdue in the final. The Eastern Michigan Open served as Stieber's first collegiate match since injuring his hand a season ago.

This past summer, Stieber was the runner-up (60kg, 132 pounds) at the 2011 FILA Junior World Championships in Bucharest, Romania.

The Buckeyes went 3-0 in dominant fashion at the Wrestle for a Cure Duals this weekend.

COLUMBUS, Ohio- The 13th-ranked Ohio State wrestling team began the 2011-12 season 3-0 Saturday after completing action at the Second Annual Wrestle for a Cure Duals in Harrisburg, Pa. In a span of six hours, the Buckeyes defeated Utah Valley (36-0), Old Dominion (30-3) and North Carolina (36-6) at the Pennsylvania Farm Show Complex and Expo Center.

The Second Annual Wrestle for a Cure Duals helped raise awareness and funds for those afflicted with Cystic Fibrosis. Wrestle for a Cure "was founded in 2009 to promote the advancement of charitable giving through the sport of wrestling."

The young Buckeyes dropped only two matches on the day en route to their fast start. In all five freshmen, two redshirt freshmen, a pair of redshirt sophomores and one redshirt junior started Saturday.

PREVIEW: Ohio State #8, #20, #13 v. Virginia Tech #19, #18, #17
November 20, 2011, 4:00 p.m. at St. John Arena

All rankings are shown in the following order: Intermat, The Open Mat, D1 College Wrestling

125: Johnni Dijulius; UR, UR, UR v. Ty Mitch; UR, #20, UR

Two Ohioans square off in this match (a common theme throughout this dual). This one should be very close, but I think Mitch wins. 0-3 VT.

133: Logan Stieber; #4, #7, #4 v. Devin Carter; #5, #5, #5

This will be a great test for Logan. He took care of Carter in high school and is looking great right now, so I see him winning in a solid decision. 3-3.

141: Hunter Stieber; #15, #16, #18 v. Zach Niebert; UR, #17, #19

Another match up of Ohioans, this one could, much like 125, go either way. Niebert has the experience advantage, but I like Hunter in a close decision. 6-3 OSU.

149: Cam Tessari; #16, #20, #17 v. Nick Murray or Nick Bracessta

If Bracessta wrestles, this is another all-Ohio match. Regardless, I think Cam wins comfortably by decision. 9-3 OSU.

157: Josh Demas; #13, #16, #16 v. Jesse Dong; #5, #7, #5

These two are not only both from Ohio, but from the same high school! Dong has been very good at this weight and has a significant experience edge. Demas, meanwhile has looked very impressive thus far, though this will be his stiffest test to date. Dong should win, but I'd like to see Demas keep it close. 9-6 OSU.

165: Derek Garcia v. Peter Yates; #14, #12, #16

This will be a tough match for Garcia, who has not looked as impressive as hoped, thus far. To be fair, he hasn't wrestled folkstyle in two years due to injuries, so hopefully we continue to see improvement throughout they year. Regardless, I don't know if he will be ready for Yates, and to be conservative, I will predict Yates wins by major. 9-10 VT.

174: Nick Heflin; #4, #4, #4 v. Chris Moon or Austin Gabel

Heflin should win here easily. The real question is if he decides to fire up the offense enough to get bonus points. I'm hoping yes, but will predict that he wins decision. 12-10 OSU.

184: C.J. Magrum UR; UR; #22 v. John Dickson

Magrum has looked solid thus far this year, and I expect that to continue against Dickson. C.J. by decision. 15-10 OSU.

197: Andrew Campolattano; #14, #13, #15 v. Nick Vetterlein

Vetterlein is a solid wrestler, but is someone Camp should beat so long as he is focused. Another decision for OSU. 18-10 OSU.

285: Peter Capone v. David Marone; #17, #19, #16

Marone is obviously the favorite. Capone has been progressing at this weight. A solid result here will be for Peter to keep this to a decision, though a pin or major is possible as Capone continues to adjust. Capone is a cagey, and I think he gets the job done. 18-13 OSU.

This will be a close match. The results of 165 (VT), 174 (OSU), and 285 (VT) are pretty certain, but everything else is up in the air. Will be a great test for the Bucks. Go out and support them if you can.

So far, so good... Heflin wins 6-2 at 174# to open the afternoon.
Magrum follows w/ a win. OSU up 6-0.
Campolattano led 2-1 after two but falls 4-3. OSU up 6-3.
Copone starts strongly up 4-0; Marone gets hurt and unable to finish. OSU up 12-3.
Dijulius loses in OT. OSU up 12-6.
L Stiebler starts and finishes strongly 6-1; OSU up 15-6.
H Stiebler pulls out the victory despite trailing to start the 3rd; OSU up 18-6.
Tessari looked like he'd be upset (judging by ranking) but pulls out late victory; OSU up 21-6
Demas loses 7-2; OSU up 21-9.
Garcia down large after 1, 7-2 and loses; OSU wins 21-12.

Looking forward to how they do in Las Vegas and for stkoran's breakdown of the Virginia Tech match.

November 20, 2011 - OSU takes down Virginia Tech 21-12

A very solid win for the Bucks.

174: No. 4 Nick Heflin DEC Chris Moon, 6-2

Heflin got the easy win here, as he should have. He didn't do much, though, and Coach Ryan indicated he really needs to be more aggressive going forward. No bonus was disappointing, especially when it was simply due to lack of attacks.

184: C.J. Magrum DEC John Dickson, 12-6

Another win that was never in doubt for OSU, but where bonus would have been nice. Magrum gave up a couple takedowns to an inferior opponent and needs to improve on top.

197: Nick Vetterlein DEC No. 14 Andrew Campolattano, 4-3

This was not a good effort from Camp in a match he should have won. Gave up an escape with only seconds remaining in the first period, and then in third got in on some shots but couldn't finish, only to get taken down with two seconds left in the match. Focus cannot drift like that. Hopefully this will serve as a learning experience. Vetterlein is no slouch, but Camp gave this one away.

HWT: Peter Capone wins by injury default No. 17 David Marone

Great job by Capone here. He was up 4-0 on Marone in the first off a TD into NF off a scramble. Pete picked up an escape in the second right before Marone defaulted. Capone looking good at Heavy right now. Definitely adjusting to the weight. Bigger guy may still pose a problem.

125: Ty Mitch DEC Johnni Dijulius, 7-5

Johnni was up 5-4 before getting hit with his second stalling call to tie the match with eight seconds left. Mitch picked up a TD with four seconds left in OT for the win. Disagree with the stalling calls, but that happens. Dijulius needs to improve his offense. Good effort, regardless.

133: No. 4 Logan Stieber DEC No. 5 Devin Carter, 6-1

Logan gets an easy win over a very very good wrestler and likely AA in Carter. He just keeps rolling. Excited to see how he does out in Vegas.

141: No. 15 Hunter Stieber DEC Zach Neibert, 7-6

Great job by Hunter here to never give up, picking up two TDs in the last minute of the match to win. He certainly has some things to work on, but desire like this is going to keep him in most matches.

149: No. 16 Cam Tessari DEC Nick Brascetta, 6-4

See above. The Monroeville kids don't quit.

157: No. 5 Jesse Dong DEC No. 13 Josh Demas, 7-2

Good effort by Demas. This was just a case of him going up against a better and more experienced wrestler. Got off to a good start by being aggressive and getting the opening TD.

165: No. 14 Pete Yates DEC Derek Garcia, 9-3

This was not actually as bad as it looks. Garcia got the opening TD then Yates got basically a seven point move after Derek moved into a bad position by reversing him and getting a four-point near fall. Garica had to take injury time, and under the new rules, the opponent gets to pick the position on the return to action. Yates took down and got the escape. The match was even otherwise.

Overall a nice win over a solid opponent. Highlights have to be Logan and Capone. Lowlights were Camp falling asleep and Heflin not showing any signs of offense.

Quick update from CKLV Invitational.

125: Dijulius with a first round bye then a huge win over #3 seed an #7 in the country Trent Sprenkle 11-8.

133: Logan with two pins.

141: Hunter with a first round major followed by a 9-3 decision over #9 seed Mitchell Port.

149: Cam wins 8-2 and then 8-3 over #10 seed Justin Accordino. Faces #2 seed Cole Von Ohlen next.

157: The lone disappointment of the day, Demas fall 8-2 in the first round to Kent's Mallie Shuster as the #3 seed. 4-3 win in his first consolation match followed by a 5-4 win over the #8 seed in his next.

165: Garcia wins 6-5 then defaults out of the tournament with a stomach issue.

174: Heflin wins 5-1 and 11-3. #7 seed Patrick Martinez is next.

184: Magrum with a pin and then a 4-3 OT victory over #7 seed and #18 in the country Ben Clymer. Faces #2 seed and #4 in the country Joe LeBlanc next.

197: Camp with a quick pin and then an 8-3 win. Faces #4 seed and #12 in the country Tyler Meeks next.

285: 11-2 MD for Capone followed by a 2-1 win in the tiebreaker against #5 seed and #15 in the country Ernest James. Up next is #4 seed and #14 in the county Ben Apland from scUM.

All in all a great first session for the Buckeyes. Eight alive in the championship bracket with great wins from Dijulius, Magrum, and Capone. Logan is dominating and everyone looks good. Only real question mark is what happened to Demas. Hopefully he fights back well through the consolation bracket.

First, I'll finish up with the last result from session 1, then get to the good stuff.

In his final consolation bout of the night, Demas won 3-1. That's three in a row for him after his rough start. Read about his loss and it seems he forced a lot of the action but came out on the wrong end of every scramble and had a few calls go against him. He will face #2 seed and 7th ranked Walter Peppelman. Peppelman defaulted in his last match, so he may do so again, ensuring that Demas will at least place. If he doesn't default, this will be a stiff test for Josh.

Now, onto the championship quarterfinals...

125: Coming off his big win earlier, DiJulius faced #6 seed and 20th ranked Tyler Iwamura. The result? A 15-6 MD for Johnni. Absolutely fabulous tournament for him so far. Up next is #2 seed and #6 in the country Frank Perrelli from Cornell.

133: Another match, another pin for Logan, this time over #8 seed Steven Keith. #5 seed and #11 in the country Zac Stevens from scUM is next.

141: Hunter faced off against scUM's #1 ranked Kellen Russell, an undefeated national champion last season and three time B1G champion and WON!!!! A 6-5 decision for Hunter that was no fluke. Hunter was better on his feet than Russell, did well from the bottom, and ok on top. Huge huge win for him. Video of the match is here: http://intermatwrestle.com/articles/9257 Up next is #10 ranked Tyler Small from Kent State.

149: Cam suffered the first quarterfinal loss for the Bucks, a 6-4 setback against #2 seed and #5 in the country Cole Von Ohlen. Nothing to be ashamed of there. Then just minutes ago Cam picked up a 5-2 decision in the consolation bracket, ensuring he will place at least 8th.

157: All Demas results already discussed.

165: Garcia out of tournament due to stomach issues.

174: Heflin being Heflin, wins 3-2 over the #7 seed. #3 seed and #7 in the country Ryan DesRoches is next.

184: Magrum got worked 17-1 by #2 seed and #4 in the country Joe LeBlanc. The loss was expected but I was hoping it wouldn't be so lopsided.

197: Camp fell 6-4 to #4 seed and #12 ranked Taylor Meeks.

285: Capone continues to impress. Coming off his big win over James, Capone won over scUM's #4 seed and #14 ranked Ben Apland 5-2. Capone is really adjusting well to heavyweight, much better than I expected. This is a wrestler who won a NY state title at 152, came to OSU as a 174, bumped up to 184 and then 197 last year, where he was a national qualifier, and is now at heavyweight and knocking off two top 15 guys back to back.

In the team race, OSU leads with 69 points over scUM (63.5) and Cornell (61).

Brackets are here: http://postedresults.escapesports.com/

This team is looking tough!

Ohio State captured the team title at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational last weekend, finishing with 129 points to runner-up scUM's 116.

125: Picking up where I left off, Johnni fell 5-2 to #2 seed Frank Perelli in the semis, came back and pounded #3 seed Sprenkle again in the consolation semis, and then fell 8-2 to #5 seed Steve Bonanno to finish 4th. Really great tournament from Johnni.

133: After succumbing to an early 5 point move, Logan proceeded to dismantle scUM's #5 seed Zac Stevens in a 14-6 major decision. He then took down #3 Aaron Schopp in the finals to win the tournament with ease.

141: Hunter picked up where he left off after taking down #1 Kellen Russel by winning his semifinal match 6-2 against Kent's #4 seed Tyler Small. Hunter fell to #3 seed Mike Mangrum in the finals to finish second. Still, a great tournament for him.

149: In the cono bracket, Cam got a big win over #3 seed Scott Sakaguchi by a 5-3 score. He then fell 7-6 in the tiebreaker to #9 seed David Habat and then fell 4-2 to Josh Wilson to finish 6th. Cam picked up some good wins and wrestled a tough bracket and solid tournament overall.

157: Demas picked up a 3-1 win in the cono bracket then won by med. forfeit over #2 seed Walter Peppleman, and then defeated Dakota Friesth 9-4 to reach the conso semis where he fell 5-0 to #4 seed Steven Monk. He was then pinned by Roger Pena to finish 6th. Josh fought back well through the conso bracket, but not a great performance.

165: Garcia was out with stomach issues.

174: Heflin fell 3-2 to Ryan DesRoches in the semis, beat Ryan LeBlanc 3-1 in sudden victory in the conso semis, and then defeated Martinez once more 3-2 to finish 3rd. Ok tournament I guess. He lost to the best guy he faced, and with his style he never wins by much, so it's hard to pinpoint how he's doing.

184: In the cono bracket Magrum picked up a 9-4 win and another win by medical forfeit before losing 3-1 in the tie breaker to #4 seed Jacob Swartz in the conso semis. He reversed that outcome to finish 5th, beating #5 seed Luke Reburtus, who beat C.J. at the EMU Open. Besides getting dismantled by LeBlanc, this was a very strong tournament for C.J.

197: Camp got bumped from the tourny down in the conso bracket in his first match, losing 8-7 to James Fox. Not a good performance from Camp, as he continues to take some freshman lumps. The good news is he is in all of his matches, he just needs to start finishing off these guys.

285: Huge tourney for Capone. After having already downed the #4 and #5 seeds, Pete slayed #1 seed Levi Cooper 5-2 to reach the finals. There, Pete faced off against #2 seed Clayton Jack. Fifty pounds lighter than Jack, Pete wrestled a great match, leading 4-3 with only seconds left in the match, Pete got called for stalling to tie it up (a very questionable call in my mind) and then got slammed down and pinned by Jack as the match was about to head to OT. A sad result but an absolutely monster tournament for Capone.

OSU takes on #9 Pittsburgh tonight at Pitt. Predictions as follows:

125: No. 13 Johnni Dijulius v. No. 17 Anthony Zanetta

I'm going with Zanetta here by close decision, thought the outcome could easily be reversed. 0-3 Pitt.

133: No. 3 Logan Stieber v. No. 20 Shelton Mack

I think Logan wins by pin, but I'll go with a major here just to be conservative. 4-3 OSU.

141: No. 6 Hunter Stieber v. Travis Shaffer

I also think Hunter wins by pin, but again I'll go major to be conservative. 8-3 OSU.

149: No. 15 Cam Tessari v. 149 ? No. 11 Tyler Nauman

Another tough match for Cam. I'll take Nauman by decision, though, like 125, this could easily go our way. 8-6 OSU.

157: 157 ? No. 19 Josh Demas v. 157 ? Donnie Tasser

After last weekend's performance, I'm not sure what to expect from Josh. I'll take Tasser by decision. 9-8 Pitt.

165: Derek Garcia v. Tyler Wilps

Garcia is hard to get a read on right now, but I'll take him over Wilps, provided he's healthy. 12-9 OSU.

174: No. 5 Nick Heflin v. No. 20 Ethan Headlee

Heflin wins in his typical Heflin style. 15-9 OSU.

184: No. 15 C.J. Magrum v. Max Thomusseit

Max hasn't done much this year, so I'm taking Magrum by decision. 18-9 OSU.

197: Andrew Campolattano v. No. 6 Matt Wilps

Excited to see how Camp does here. I think he keeps it to a decision, but probably not that close. 18-12 OSU.

HWT: No. 11 Peter Capone v. No. 16 Zac Thomusseit

Capone finally gets to face a heavy close to his size, and I think he wins this one by decision. OSU wins 21-12.

Wins at 133, 141, and 174 seem very safe. A loss at 197 seems very likely, but everything else could go either way.
