COLUMBUS, Ohio - Behind wins from a quartet of Buckeyes in Bo Touris, Colt Sponseller, Nick Heflin, and C.J. Magrum, the Ohio State wrestling team scored 12 points, but dropped a 21-12 decision at No. 19 Illinois Friday night in Huff Hall.

The Buckeyes (2-8; 1-4 Big Ten) will now promptly prepare for a home dual vs. No. 4 Minnesota at 7 p.m. Saturday in St. John Arena in Columbus. The match will air live on the Big Ten Network.

Cont.

125 Bo Touris (Ohio State) DEC Logan Arlis (Illinois), 11 - 6
133 #7 Bernard Futrell (Illinois) MD #20 Ian Paddock (Ohio State), 16 - 6
141 #4 James Kennedy (Illinois) MD Randy Languis (Ohio State), 13 - 4
149 #20 Eric Terrazas (Illinois) DEC Mike Fee (Ohio State), 8 - 2
157 Jackson Morse (Illinois) MD Kusar, Jared (Ohio State), 16 - 5
165 #7 Colt Sponseller (Ohio State) DEC Conrad Polz (Illinois), 3 - 2
174 #15 Nick Heflin (Ohio State) DEC Dan Stelter (Illinois), 1 - 0
184 C.J. Magrum (Ohio State) DEC Tony Dallago (Illinois), 3 - 1
197 Joseph Barczak (Illinois) DEC Peter Capone (Ohio State), 9 - 3
285 Patrick Walker (Illinois) DEC Zach Stolarsky (Ohio State), 8 - 4

Not too much to say, as this went about as expected. Nice to see Touris pick up his first win. Good job by Fee to keep it to a decision. Heflin is maddening, but at least he wins.

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Nearly 24 hours after the Ohio State wrestling team matched-up against No. 19 Illinois in Champaign Friday night, the Buckeyes quickly returned to action vs. No. 4 Minnesota Saturday evening in St. John Arena.

Knowing a match vs. the Gophers is never an easy feat, the Scarlet and Gray did not let a five-and-a-half hour drive back to Columbus in the middle of the morning detract from the task at hand. An early pin by Peter Capone at 197 pounds appeared to give the Buckeyes (2-9; 1-5 Big Ten) the early momentum needed to take on a Minnesota team that entered the match undefeated in the Big Ten (5-0; 14-3 overall).

125 #5 Zachary Sanders (Minnesota) MD Bo Touris (Ohio State),18 - 4

This actually wasn't as bad as it looks, as Touris was actually quite game for the first two periods, entering the 3rd down only 4-2. Then Sanders put on a clinic.

133 David Thorn (Minnesota) MD Jacob Vaughan (Ohio State), 19 - 11

Vaughan got the start for Paddock, who has looked horrible lately. He started out hot, getting after Thorn and leading 5-4 after the 1st Period. Three Thorn TDs put Vaughan down 2 entering the 3rd, where Thorn, like Sanders, really went to work. Good effort from Vaughan, though.

141 #2 Michael Thorn (Minnesota) TF5 Randy Languis (Ohio State), 16 - 0 (1:33)

Tough last week+ for Languis, having to face #1 Russell, #4 Kennedy and #2 Thorn. At least he didn't get pinned.

149 Daniel Zilverberg (Minnesota) DEC Mike Fee (Ohio State), 7 - 1

Fee losing by decision is the best result that can be hoped for.

157 Matt Mincey (Minnesota) DEC Sean Nemec (Ohio State), 11 - 8

Nemec was back in the lineup for the Bucks. Came out and the opening TD, before Mincey escaped and then picked up a TD and NF3 of his own. Another TD made it 8-3 Mincey going into the 3rd. Down 9-3 after a Mincey escape, Nemec fought back with a TD/NF3 of his own to pull within one, but a Mincey escape plus riding time provided closed out the scoring. A pretty typical Nemec match - flashes of brilliance combined with lack of focus.

165 #7 Colt Sponseller (Ohio State) DEC #11 Cody Yohn (Minnesota), 5 - 2

Nice win for Colt. This should hopefully secure him as the #1 seed for the B1G tournament so long as he continues to take care of business. Colt was the aggressor for most of the match and looked good. He seems to rounding into form.

174 #13 Scott Glasser (Minnesota) DEC #15 Nick Heflin (Ohio State), 4 - 2

Glasser was penalized for fleeing the mat in the 1st and Heflin escaped in the 2nd to leasd 2-0 going into the 3rd. After a Glasser escape made it 2-1, Heflin seemed content to try and let the clock run out without doing anything, which didn't work at all, as he was penalized for stalling with about 10 seconds left and was then immediately taken down as the match ended, just like the finish to his match against Lofthouse. If Heflin continues to do absolutely nothing against quality opponents I can't imagine he will come out on top too often.

184 #8 Kevin Steinhaus (Minnesota) DEC C.J. Magrum (Ohio State), 4 - 2

Not a bad effort from Magrum. A Steinhaus TD followed by a Magrum reversal put the score at 2-2 entering the 2nd. This is where C.J. lost the match, as he started down and couldn't escape. A Steinhaus escape and riding time accounted for the 4-2 result. C.J. was aggressive and was in on several shots, but couldn't finish.

197 Peter Capone (Ohio State) FALL Joe Nord (Minnesota), (2:30)

Nice work from Capone getting the early stick against Nord. Minny will obviously be much improved when Yohn takes over this weight after he gets back from injury.

285 #8 Anthony Nelson (Minnesota) FALL Zach Stolarsky (Ohio State), 1:19

Nothing much to say here.

Wisconsin is up next. The Bucks will be favored at 165, and wins can be had at 125, 141, 157, and 174. At 184 I don't expect Magrum to beat Rutt, but I'm very interested to see how he does. I expect Wisconsin to get significant bonus at 133, 149, 285 and perhaps 197, though Capone has been a gamer this year..

Big Ten championships

2 guys will be wrestling for Big Ten championships today at 4 PM on the Big Ten network (nice scheduling):(
For the second-consecutive season, senior Colt Sponseller of the Ohio State wrestling team will compete in the final of the Big Ten championships at 165 pounds. Joining Sponseller in the championships finals is redshirt-freshman Nick Heflin at 174 pounds. Both Buckeyes are No. 2 seeds.

A runner-up a year ago, Sponseller will look to win the title at 4 p.m. ET Sunday after beating Minnesota's Cody Yohn, 2-0. Sponseller now has upped his consecutive win streak to 10. Heflin held on for a 2-1 overtime win against Ben Jordan of Wisconsin. With both wrestlers knotted up at 1 each at the end of regulation, Heflin chose bottom to start the first 30 second period. Managing to escape, Heflin literally held on to Jordan the next 30 seconds and earned his first trip to the league championships' final in his first attempt.

In the team race, Penn State leads the field with 110.5 points, but Iowa is not far behind with 109 points. Minnesota rounds out the Top 3 with 96.5 points. Ohio State improved two places to seventh with 52.5 points.

Eighth place finish in the Big Ten championship

Just wait until next year:osu:
Senior Colt Sponseller finished second at 165 pounds and redshirt freshman Nick Heflin was runner-up at 174, as Ohio State finished in eighth place at the Big Ten wrestling championships yesterday in Evanston, Ill.

Sophomore C.J. Magrum was fourth at 184. Ian Paddock, who forfeited his final two matches because of injury, will join Sponseller, Heflin and Magrum in the NCAA Tournament, March 17-19 in Philadelphia.

Penn State edged Iowa 139-138 to win the team title, and Minnesota finished third.

Sponseller lost to Andrew Howe of Wisconsin 3-1 in overtime, and Heflin fell to Ed Ruth of Penn State 8-5.

Not a bad first day at all for the Buckeyes at the NCAA Championships, as the five competing went a combined 6-4. Everyone got a win, so all are still alive today, and Colt won both of his matches to advance to the quarter finals.

133: Paddock fell to #9 Devin Carter in his opening match 16-8, but bounced back in his consolation bout to beat Garrett Drucker 3-1. He will face Minnesota's David Thorn in his next match.

165: Colt started things off by majoring Chad Porter 11-3, before defeating Eren Civan 7-3. He will take on #4 Josh Asper in a huge bout this morning. If he wins, he is guaranteed to AA.

174: Nick started things off with a dominating 6-0 over Matt Demichiel, before falling to #7 Nick Amuchasteghi 6-1. He will face Matt Desino this morning in the consolation bracket. Beyond that, he will likely need wins over Scott Glasser (who he lost to earlier this year, close) and then likely #8 Mike Letts in order to AA.

184: Magrum got off to a poor start, losing 8-0 to Daniel Rinaldi, but he bounced back in the consolation to win 3-0 over Mike Larson. He will face #5 Joe LeBlanc in his next match. A.J. Kissel, who Magrum beat at B1Gs, gave LeBlanc all he could handle when the faced off yesterday, and then Iowa's Grant Gambrall beat LeBlanc pretty good, so Magrum seemingly does have a chance.

197: Pete Capone fell 7-3 to #6 Micah Burak in his opening bout. Though he trailed only 1-0 after two periods and started the third on the bottom, Burak was able to turn Capone for a near fall, effectively eliminating any chance he had to win. Capone bounced back in the consis with a nice 7-3 over Eric Schuth. He will take on Nebraska's Andy Johnson this morning in what looks to be a winnable match.

Two Buckeyes are still alive after today's morning session.

At 165, Colt Sponseller picked up a huge 3-1 win over #4 Josh Asper of Maryland to advance to the semi-finals. Colt is now guaranteed to be an All-American (he can finish no worse than 6th) and is still in the hunt for the national title. He faces #1 Jordan Burroughs of Nebraska next. Burroughs may be the best wrestler in the NCAA at any weight, so odds are Colt will lose, but I do think he has an excellent chance to finish 3rd. In any event, congrats to Colt for locking up that elusive AA.

Nick Heflin is also still alive in the consolation bracket at 174. He started the day off by working Mike Dessino over in an 8-2 victory. He then went out and avenged his loss earlier this season to Minnesota's Scott Glasser by picking up a 4-2 win in sudden victory. After picking up a 2nd period espace to go up 1-0, Heflin was twice penalized for stalling in the final period. He was, however, able to ride out Glasser to pick up the riding time point, despite being near a third stalling call. The overtime TD secured the victory. Heflin will face Maryland's #8 seed Mike Letts in his next match. If he wins, he is an All-American.

The other three Bucks all lost their first match today. At 133, Ian Paddock fell 8-2 to Minnesota's David Thorn, ending a tough and injury plagued season for him. Cody Magrum fell 12-8 to #5 Joe LeBlanc at 184. Magrum put up a spirited effort, but it wasn't enough. Hopefully next year Magrum will be a bit more comfortable at 184 and will have a bigger gas tank. Finally, Peter Capone fell 11-2 to Andy Johnson at 197. Overall, I think getting a victory at Nationals at a non-ideal weight made for a good season for Capone.

Penn State cruised to the team title, and Cornell beat out Iowa for second.

Anthony Robles completed a perfect season winning at 125 pounds. He has a unique story.

Colt Sponseller finished in 4th place, while Heflin failed to place.

Colt fell 14-6 to eventual national champion Jordan Burroughs in the semifinals. He then bounced back with a 3-2 decision over #7 Shane Onufer to advance to the 3rd place match where he would meet defending national champion Andrew Howe. Colt fell to Howe 6-4 to finish fourth.

Also, to put things in perspective regarding his "disappointing" performance last year, the two wrestlers Colt lost to both finished as national runner-ups this year. That means that in Colt's four losses over the past two national championships, he has fallen to two national champions and two national runner-ups. Not exactly something to be ashamed of.

Regarding Heflin, he fell 9-2 to #8 Mike Letts in his AA match. A solid first national tournament for Nick.

Overall, the team finished 29th with 20.5 points.

In terms of outlook for next year, I think there is a lot to be excited about. While the team likely won't be in the B1G or national title hunt, it should be much improved. I'll break down this year's team v. next year's hypothetical lineup. Wrestlers will be ranked from 0-10, 0 being someone likely to be pinned every time, while 10 is a national champion level wrestler.

125: 2011 - Bo Touris (2); 2012 - Nikko Triggas (8); Net +6

Touris showed some flashes that he could be decent this year, but ultimately didn't do very much. Triggas has improved at nationals every year so far, winning one match, then two, then four to finish 8th and AA at last year championships. He should be in the hunt to AA once again. Huge improvement at this weight.

133: 2011 - Ian Paddock (6); 2012 - Logan Steiber (9); Net +3

Last year, I would have ranked Ian as a 7, as he had a very solid freshman year. This year was a step back, though that was due mostly to his injury troubles. In any event, I expect to see Steiber at this weight next year, and anything less than an AA finish will be considered a disappointment. Solid improvement at this weight.

141: 2011 - Randy Languis (3); 2012 - Ian Paddock/Hunter Steiber/Cam Tessari (7); Net +4

I'm not exactly sure who will wrestle at this weight. I think Paddock definitely moves up to 141, but he may redshirt next year in order to get his injury issues sorted out. Not sure if Steiber or Tessari are ready to AA as true freshman, though they may well be. In any event, I anticipate a big improvement here regardless of who mans the weight.

149: 2011 - Mike Fee (2); 2012 - ????; Net ????

This weight is a bit of a mystery. It's possible that Steiber or Tessari could take this weight, perhaps Kusar could move down, or maybe we will see Fee again. I really have no idea. I think ideally Kusar is able to get down to 149 and I would rate him at a 5.

157: 2011 - Sean Nemec (5); 2012 - Josh Demas (6); Net +1

I may be selling Demas a bit short here, but I'm trying to be conservative. Nemec seemed to have the potential, but just couldn't put it together. Demas looked good this year in open tournaments. I look for slight to solid improvement here. Demas should be competitive with most everyone.

165: 2011 - Colt Sponseller (9); 2012 - Derek Garcia (8); Net -1

This is the first weight where I see the Bucks taking step back, but it is only a slight one (if that). Colt was easily the best guy on the team this year, but Garcia comes in as a top national recruit who spent the last year training at the Olympic Training Center, so there is a great chance that he steps into the lineup and doesn't miss a beat. This weight will continue to be very solid.

174: 2011 - Nick Heflin (8); 2012 - Nick Heflin (8); Net +0

Heflin had a very nice freshman year, finishing as the B1G runner up and then making it to the round of 12 at nationals. He will be strong candidate to earn AA honors next year, as five AAs at this weight graduate. He should perhaps be a 9, but again, being conservative.

184: 2011 - C.J. Magrum (6); 2012 - C.J. Magrum (7): Net +1

Magrum had a tough year adjusting from 197 to 184, and appeared to have some energy issues. He had a solid finish to the year, though, taking 4th at B1Gs and then wrestling well at the NCAA tournament. I expect to see improvement after a full year adjusting to the weight.

197: 2011 - Peter Capone (6); 2012 - Peter Capone (7); Net +1

Capone had a very nice freshman year after being forced to move up from 184. Once he is able to add some weight, I really think Capone can be quite effective at this weight.

285: 2011 - Zach Stolarsky (1); 2012 - ????; Net ????

Based on the roster, it looks like Dominic Jontony, who I would rate as a 1, will take the weight next year, as I expect Elor to redshirt. However, I am holding out hope that OSU can find a JUCO or a transfer to man the weight, as it would be a shame to have a such a hole in what looks to be an otherwise solid lineup.

As it stands, that's a +15 improvement from last year, and +18 assuming Kusar can make 149 (perhaps more if Steiber or Tessari take the weight).

The suspense officially ended early Monday afternoon when Andrew Campolattano walked into the Bound Brook High School library, sporting a scarlet, gray and white sweater vest ? the colors of the Ohio State Buckeyes.

After months of reflection and deciding college wrestling was in his better interest than football, New Jersey's second four-time state champion and its all-time winningest wrestler has settled on Ohio State.

He chose the Buckeyes after seriously considering Virginia Tech and Nebraska.

"I chose Ohio State because they are going to give me the tools I need to reach every one of my goals as far as academics and wrestling goes," said Campolattano, adding praise for Nebraska coach Mark Manning and Virginia Tech coach Kevin Dresser for their recruiting efforts and help. "It's great. It's a great day to be a Buckeye. "

It is a huge pickup. Camp is rated by Intermat as the #14 recruit in the country. The key will be which weight he wrestles at (215 in high school, so a cut to get to 197 or will need to bulk up to go Heavy). Some have questioned he motivation to be a great wrestler (he originally committed to Rutgers to play football) but I think that sort of discussion is premature.

This article from the Columbus Dispatch backs up what our knowledge wrestling poster skoran posted above.
This time will be different.

That's the mantra the Ohio State wrestling staff is living by as it welcomes the nation's top-ranked recruiting class to Columbus. Five recruits ranked in the top 33, according to InterMat

wrestle.com, arrived yesterday for summer classes and voluntary offseason workouts.

This is the second ballyhooed group that coach Tom Ryan has recruited in his five seasons. The 2007 class was also ranked No. 1, but it didn't live up to expectations.

Ryan and his staff are working to make sure that this class lives up to the hype. Having them on campus already, which didn't happen in 2007, is the first step. Making sure the class remains committed to offseason work is the next one.

"(Ryan) makes it quite clear about what he expects of us," freshman Kenny Courts said. "He brought this group in to win, and that's what he expects this group to do. He told us that this group has a crazy amount of potential. He expects us to contend for a national championship and bring the first one to Columbus."

Ryan will reinforce that message throughout the summer and into the preseason.

"We've got some stats when they come in on how No. 1 classes have done two or three years down the road," Ryan said, "and for them to feel, 'It's your destiny to bring the first (wrestling) national championship to Ohio State.' So really it is about getting them to believe that."

Ohio State needed reinforcements after suffering through its worst season of Ryan's tenure in 2010-11. Hunter Stieber (No. 7 nationally), Cam Tessari (27) and Johnni DiJulius (33) - all from Ohio - will fill holes at the low to middle weights. Andrew Campolattano (14) and Courts (16) will provide a boost at the upper weights. Heavyweight Orry Elor isn't ranked but is a Greco-Roman junior national champion.

Some will be inserted into the lineup immediately, possibly at 141, 149, 184 or 197 pounds. With redshirt freshmen Logan Stieber (133) and Westerville North graduate Josh Demas (157) likely to start along with Derek Garcia (165), who delayed his enrollment from 2010, Ohio State could have freshman at six of 10 weights.

Haven't looked at this thread for awhile, but wanted to find out 'what happened', as coaching changes shouldn't affect the wrestlers as it's more of an individual sport......coaching technique (actually coaching the wrestlers on THEIR technique) is the main difference, and the guys already on the team should still be pretty sound.

Heck, I know the OSU kids are disappointed in what they did not accomplish, and it sounds like the recruiting for the last two years has been pretty spectacular. Now, how it pans out on the mat against pretty stiff competition (the B10 IS the toughest league, my not-so-humble apologies to the B12), is all relative to how the kids develop.

Seems hard to believe it's been 5 years since Hellickson departed, but there it is, so gotta believe. Like seeing these guys succeed, it's the hardest 2 minutes in sport - any sport.

You've obviously never been in a potato sack race.

But I agree - I have been looking for the program to hit the top ever since Logan Stieber committed when he was like 12.
