I had heard strong rumors that Snyder would take an Olympic redshirt next season but unfortunately, it looks to be about positive after this interview with Flo. I can pretty comfortably say that with no Snyder, there will be no repeat. Can't blame him though, he is on top of his game for freestyle right now and might as well capitalize on it. At least I don't think this will be like a Howe situation, where he transfers to another school after the redshirt. He is a Buckeye through and through.

And Snyder just dominated the World bronze medalist Cortina of Cuba 4-0. Taylor got a TF, Burroughs a fall, Tervel a tech, Metcalf an 8-5 decision. Ramos got destroyed in a tech and Herbert went down 8-4. But some amazing wrestling by Snyder as of late.

Good for him! I hope he gets the gold. Can't fault a guy for trying to be the champion of the world. Good luck, Kyle!

I think my money is on Penn State right now.

I think it would take the perfect storm to make a run at a consecutive title without Snyder. You get a likely title with Tomasello back (particularly with Delgado and Waters gone, though Gilman and Garrett are tough) and tons of bonus, Bo will make a run at a title (hoping Dieringer moves up to 174 though) and get plenty of bonus points, and you might have two potential finalists in Hunter Stieber and DiJulius. All depends on Hunter's health and if DiJulius can be consistent in his senior year and not get caught out of position all the time. I am hoping Hunter goes 149 and Hayes goes 141. Mic Jordan is a wildcard at 157 but I am hoping he can AA, he was almost as good as Bo in high school. Martin I don't have much hope in but Courts showed it can be done in the final hour. No idea who slots in at 197, probably won't get any points there. Then I am hoping Haines can get the spot at heavy or Tav is full strength...we need some real points there. Regardless, I have PSU as the clear favorite and Iowa/Cornell will be very tough.

Snyder murders everyone at the Pan Am Games to take gold...all tech falls. This kid has a chance to be an American wrestling legend and win an Olympic gold medal...he is that good right now. Also, Burroughs and Rey win gold, Herbert gets silver.

Really excited to watch Snyder in the Olympics. He is going to be a legend when he finishes up his college career.

Two questions for people with better wrestling minds than me:

1) Snyder lost to a college kid in the NCAAs and now is killing it against pros (at least I think some are pros in these competitions). Did he just keep getting better or is it the style of wrestling that is better suited for him? Please keep in mind I am not complaining or saying anything bad about losing the NCAA tournament, just an observation.

2) If Snyder continues like this why would he come back to OSU after the Olympics? Why not turn pro? I'd love to have him back but if he can make a good living after the Olympics then what is in it for him to maintain amateur status?

TIA!

JMO but:

1) He just got caught in the finals, it was a bit of a fluke...not saying he for sure would have beat Gadsen but getting stuck like that makes it tough to say. But Snyder had a few losses total this year and I think some of that was a byproduct of him foregoing his senior year of high school to train at the Olympic center and only wrestling freestyle. Once he was getting re-acclimated, he started getting some big time wins (namely over Cox, Schiller, and Burak). At the end of the day I do think Kyle is a little better in freestyle but I also think 197 last year was about as loaded as I have ever seen a weight class at NCAA's.

2) Well, "turning pro" is relative because there is no actual pros. I know there is a lot to be made in sponsorships but you have to build a brand in the college first. Dake and Taylor both turned in great college careers and then cashed in. In wrestling, you have to immediately cash in after school but unless he wins a gold medal at the Oympics, I don't think it translates to more money down the line than if he comes back to OSU. Winning 3 NCAA titles could mean more. And aside from that, Kyle loves OSU and him and his family place a VERY high amount of emphasis on education. They will see to it that he gets his degree sooner rather than later (at least that is what I have gathered). And not to mention that after he returns for 3 years, he will have another year to prepare for the next Olympics after graduation. But a gold medal could influence his thinking no doubt.

You can be an Olympic caliber athlete and still lose one here and there. I'm sure wrestling in a tournament you're being scouted, you're getting fatigued deeper into the tournament possibly. I also would say he would likely finish his degree and have a good chance of coming back to wrestle. It also may be the style of wrestling the is better suited for him. He accomplished a great achievement this year at his age so nothing to be ashamed of at all. You win some you lose some.

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State head wrestling coach Tom Ryan has signed a five-year contract extension, TJ Shelton, associate athletics director for sports administration, announced today.

“Our wrestling program has enjoyed unprecedented success under Coach Ryan’s leadership and he has established himself as one of the nation’s best coaches,” said Shelton. “Tom has led us to a place among the nation's elite during his nine years as our head coach. He and his staff have demonstrated the importance of the overall development of our student-athletes - providing outstanding community service, building a championship program and placing an emphasis on success in the classroom. We are delighted that Coach Ryan will continue to build character, integrity and accountability with our student-athletes for years to come.”

Congrats, coach. This was well earned.
