Ohio State Wrestling (2015/2017/2018 B1G Champs, 2015 National Champs, 2019 National Runners-up)

Decent shot Bo will be back for the Iowa dual on 1/4. That is the idea but it is difficult to have a set recovery date with the nature of his injury. If we have him back at full strength, it will be very interesting to see how we fare with a healthy Hunter and Bo.

OSU will need a few individual upsets and extra points from a few of the favorites to pull off the upset

Bo is supposed to go tomorrow (not positive though)...even with him, we need our best performance. Bo will take Moore if he is healthy, tell you that now. Need Tomasello to win (which he should if he wrestles smart imo), DiJulius will be a tough matchup with Clark, need bonus from Stieber (at least a major), need Hunter to win (he should be going too...need bonus if against Grothus, a solid win against Sorensen), Demas needs to win (I'd say bonus but he will wrestle a one point match no matter what), Bo to just win, Martin to not give up bonus, Courts to wrestle a close match (I'd ask for a win but he is crumbling as of late), Snyder needs to beat Burak (I think he will/should, he just lost matches to some top guys), and for Tav to only lose by decision.

I think we win this meet if Bo and Hunter wrestle and are relatively healthy. Could go either way really but I like us in that scenario by around 3 points.

Iowa 18 OSU 14

Quick observations... Tomasello had no offense vs Gilman. He looked frustrated most of the match and was not able to keep Gilman down when he was on top and unable to escape on bottom. Dijulius wrestled a good match against Clark. Logan Stieber was dominant at 141 with the TF. Hunter Stieber looked injured. Favored his elbow from the opening whistle and lost. It's clear that this is some kind of structural injury (Tommy John was rumored on one of the message forums). And if that is the case he may be done for 2015. Demas wrestled well - not a lot of offense but he won. Bo Jordan looked solid over Moore. He was fluid the entire match and generally in decent shape in the 3rd. Martin was outclassed by Evans. Courts showed no offense at all - he looked gassed again. Snyder had to take injury time at the end of the 1st period. He lost choice and got a stalling warning which all added up to being down 2-0 entering the 3rd with riding time in. He was not able to generate any offense at all in this match. Tav was dominated by Telford even if the score was not indicative.

I was at the meet...fantastic turnout and awesome atmosphere with many knowledgeable fans in attendance. Hunter is just out of wrestling shape...great 1st period and just got gassed...those last two takedowns he gave up were too easy. Courts needs to get tougher, apparently he folds all the time in practice. Big time performances out of Bo and DiJulius but Snyder and Tomasello were very disappointing. Overall I thought we wrestled them tough but we should have won that dual...no doubt we should have won one of Toms, Hunter, or Snyder's match and that is all we needed as long as Tav doesn't get pinned at heavy.

Just sealed a win over #3 Penn State with a huge 6-1 win for Snyder over the #4 McIntosh (first big signature win). The other results:

125: #7 Tomasello over #8 Conway 10-2 MD. Huge win for Toms over a very quality opponent and bonus points to boot for us.
133: #10 Gulibon over #3 DiJulius 5-4 Dec. Tough loss for Johnny against a very good wrestler...wish he could've got the win to keep the momentum going after his big win over Clark against Iowa. He'll be fine though, tough match.
141: #1 L. Stieber over NR Moss by fall. Another pin for Logie Bear.
149: #8 H. Stieber over #16 Beitz 7-2 Dec. Very nice win for Hunter after looking way out of it his last two matches. Beitz is a quality wrestler and Hunter handled him...glad to see him finish the match strong as well.
157: #7 Alton over #4 Demas 3-1 Dec. Yet another boring match from Demas where a score near the end wins it, except he ended up on the wrong end of the result...that will happen when you consistently wrestle passively.
165: #6 Jordan over NR Hammond 11-6 Dec. Surprised Hammond is not ranked but a decent win for Bo. Gave up a takedown and you would have liked to see bonus here, but a solid win nonetheless.
174: #4 Brown over NR Prezzia by fall. Not sure where Martin was but giving up the fall really hurt here.
184: #15 Courts over #17 McCutcheon 4-2 Dec. Really good win for Kenny and at a CRUCIAL moment in the dual. Hopefully this gets him back on track.
197: #7 Snyder over #4 McIntosh 6-1 Dec. Huge, huge win for Kyle personally and a clutch win for the team to seal the dual.
Hvy: #6 Lawson over #13 Tavanello 3-1 Dec. Tav has yet to earn a win over anyone of note this year...really starting to get concerning. He needs to get a big win sometime soon.

Overall: A 22-15 win against a very good team. Honestly, the score could have been much worse in our favor but a very good effort overall.

Overall happy with the way we wrestled but Courts and Demas need to pick it up and I mean pick it up big time. They both need to AA and this whole drag your feet and hope for a takedown in the final 30 seconds crap will not do it. Good opportunity to get Hunter, Martin, and Tav some rest though.

Neither one of the guys that you mentioned won up north yesterday which is not a good sign. Also, Hunter did not wrestle again and I thought he was supposed to.

I'm worried Hunter will not be able to come back 100% all season. The issue with trying to rest and recover is handling your weight...really tough for him to stay down at 149 without wrestling...only so much weight you can lose by shadow drilling, biking, etc. Hopefully he can get full go soon and shake off the rust before March. If Hunter does not AA high for us (ideally make it to finals), I do not think we likely win the title. But Demas and Courts are just making me want to put a fist through a wall...it is not that they lose those close matches. I just want to see them actually attack their opponents and quit hoping to get a takedown in the last few seconds. To me, that shows either a passive attitude or a lack of conditioning, neither of which are excusable at this point in the season. Courts had a chance to get a big win and got handled.

I still think this is a team that can win the title if our freshman perform like they have been the past few times. All of Toms, Jordan, and Snyder can win the whole thing if they peak at the right time. Snyder picked up some big wins over McIntosh and Huntley that should be huge for his confidence, Bo beat Massa again (he has a big one coming up against the #5 Walsh from Indiana), and Toms finally got a big win with his major over Conaway. Upsets happen to older guys like Johnny D and Hunter, but they have proved they can forget about it and peak at the tourney. For the freshman, winning some big matches at this point in the season is so big for confidence.

Just for our wrestling fans here (not Ohio State related)...just saw Foxcatcher tonight. Thought the film was fantastic but I think knowing the back story before going to see it will enhance the movie. I thought it was a good crossroads of actual wrestling action and cinematography/acting. Not going too in-depth but I think it is at least worth a watch for the wrestling fans.
