Ohio State Wrestling (2015/2017/2018 B1G Champs, 2015 National Champs, 2019 National Runners-up)

Not happy on the Snyder match but anything could happen in March...Gadson/Cox/Schiller/Snyder is about the tightest and most talented young grouping of wrestlers I have seen. Gadson beat Schiller (the current #1) in the finals, it is anyone's weight pending progress and I like our true freshy's odds there.

Tomasello breezed through to a 3rd place finish (really wish he would not have got caught so he could beat Dance and get a matchup with Garrett). DiJulius came back for a 3rd place finish too, good job but no idea how he loses that early. Logie Bear KILLED the #3 wrestler in the country at his weight in finals...if he is healthy all year, nobody will touch him. Tav fought back to pin the guy he lost to and place 5th, hopefully he peaks late. But that is the end of the good news. Courts imploded to not even place and Martin was the same old, same old.

Keep in mind though that it is early and we seem to do this every season. We just need to learn, keep improving, and peak at the right time.

All in all, I thought it was a pretty respectable 2nd place finish considering we essentially had three weight classes missing.

It was encouraging to see guys fight back in the consi's. My biggest issue was Toms, DiJulius, and Courts going down so early. Those guys had the opportunity to match up with some guys they will have to beat in February but went out too early to get those matchups.

Had a chance to watch a few of what is now free content on Flow. Couple thoughts

Tomasello got pinned in a match he was dominating against Peters. It happened so quickly and he was unable to fight off his back. He needs to correct that but at least he's not one of the guys lacking aggression and pushing pace. He needs to stay out of the scrambles.

Snyder was pushing pace but he's finding it hard to get his offense going against some of the better, more mature, athletic wrestlers at 197. His weakness is top. Not a surprise considering he is better at freestyle. I thought Gadson was borderline stalling at the end but not nearly enough to get a point for Snyder. Gadson then went and pretty much controlled Schiller in the finals. Not worried at all about Snyder. He'll lose a few more but barring injury he should be in contention in March.

Courts... not much more to say that hasn't already been said. Conditioning, aggressiveness and pace... all seem to be lacking again. He is gonna need to really pick it up if he wants to score at nationals. DiJulius pretty much the same situation but he looked decent in the consolations and nabbed 3rd. Martin was unimpressive - expectations are low for him. That wasn't a loaded field at HVY. Thought Tav could do better but he is what he is. I do not expect him to AA in March.

January is going to be really interesting with Bo and Hunter back in the lineup. The dual schedule is absolutely loaded

Courts and Tav MUST score for us in the NCAA's to make a run for a title. Perhaps not AA for Tav but he has to score and Courts needs to AA. Right now, neither look likely but this seems to always be what we get in December. Martin is just going to be bonus if he manages to win a match or two somehow. Tough to judge team performance overall without Bo and Hunter but certain individuals need to pick it up fast.

Ironman is going (one day through) and this tournament is basically early Christmas for me. My Graham Falcons have delivered strong so far and are in 3rd but narrowly behind (3 behind the leader, 1.5 behind 2nd). The "Dream 3" (as I shall henceforth call the three stud freshman at Graham) have mostly performed. Mitch Moore has scrapped his way to quarter finals at 113 and Rocky Jordan (yes, the prodigal Jordan son) handily beat a state placer and about tech falled a big seed on his way to quarters. Ryan Thomas at 138 got caught in his first match and then lost in the last second in his last consolation match...he is far from done, watch for him down the road.

As for Ohio State-bound guys, we mostly dominated. However, Rodriguez got beat 3-0 in the very first round by some nobody...that is not exciting. But Ohio State fans and general wrestling fans alike should be excited about a likely matchup of #2 Myles Martin vs. #1 Zahid Valencia in the finals.

My Graham Falcons just locked it up, they are the national #1 now! So needless to say, I am pumped. Mitch Moore blasted the #2 in the country 11-1 in the semi's and dominated 6-1 over the #5 guy nationally in the finals...this kid is out of the world talented. Rocky made it to finals and lost narrowly to a Bellbrook kid, thought he should have won the match but oh well, still a great tourney. Marinelli beat #2 nationally ranked Manville of Blair in SV, huge match for him and some of the best wrestling you will watch...really wish he would have stuck with us.

Martin just lost narrowly in 4 OTs to Valencia (#1 overall)...this will be a huge matchup down the road, really good wrestling. Hayes did not come to Ironman to wrestle but Kolodzik got beat by a kid from Oklahoma in SV.

Finally, Rodriguez got 5th and the guy who beat him turned out to be a stud who got 4th and nearly beat the #5 guy overall. Still a disappointing tournament for Rodriguez though,

Correction posted on OSU site. Tied at 19-19 - 5 matches each. OSU with 48 scored points - Missouri with 48. Next criteria first takedown...OSU 19 - Missouri 20

Thoughts.... Hunter Stieber was not ready to wrestle. I think we now see why he has been held out. Tomasello out wrestled Waters in the 3rd period. Had he not given up the 5 point counter in the 1st he probably wins. Kresevic had the match won and the Missouri kid was completely gassed and somehow Kres lost it. Martin wrestled better against an unranked guy. Snyder picked up the extra points they needed. Tav kept things close, looked improved and Cox was unable to get bonus points. Courts was out with a shoulder injury. Bo Jordan still out.

^ Good points above. Talked to "my guy" (I guess I will just leave it at that) and Hunter was told to sit out but refused to stay off the mat. I like that attitude but he was not ready to go and it cost us the duel. Just get healthy and be ready to help us win a title.

But really I think we will be in for a much different January. Hunter will be full go, Bo should be as well, and Tomasello will start wrestling smarter at this level. Toms is really winning all his matches, sans one stupid mistake every match that inevitably gets him an L. Correct that and he is competing for a title. Overall, I think this was not a terrible result given what we had available.

I've had a chance now to watch some of the marquee teams OSU has left on their dual schedule - PSU, Iowa and Minnesota. I think being objective OSU is going to be the underdog in 2-3 of those - maybe all three. If the rumors about the extent of Hunter Stieber's elbow injury are true they lose a lot of scoring in the duals and every tournament of meaning without him in that lineup. I hope that they can get surprise points from someone else that catches fire in Feb & March but I am not expecting it. The expectations were high this year. Ryan has done an incredible job of recruiting and the future is bright for OSU wrestling. But the B1G is a tough conference and Sanderson, Robinson and Brands are proven top notch guys too and they aren't about to give an inch.

Well if we are down Hunter the rest of the year, we just are not going to have a chance to win it all in February...too many points left on the table and likely bonus. But I think we will be a much better tourney team than dual team, plus Ryan gets everyone peaking in late January. We "lost" two duals on criteria and without two of our best wrestlers in Hunter and Bo. Without those guys against Iowa or Minnesota, the dual could look bad. But we absolutely need those guys healthy here in a few weeks.

I hope you are right about peaking in January. I looked at the potential OSU-PSU match in early Jan. One that I was considering driving in for. PSU could be favored in 6 of those matches with the current lineups. That seems crazy considering how much they lost to graduation and red shirting.

Worked out with the now-ranked #1 Graham Falcons and saw some familiar faces. Guys are training incredibly hard, very impressed with quite a few guys. Bo has a toe injury that will keep him out for a couple more weeks most likely but man is he JACKED right now. I drilled some with him and Max Thommuseit (#1 guy from Pitt at 184) and it is unreal how powerful those guys are. Mic Jordan was there and he will be redshirting this season. Probably a good move, as Demas and Languis will both graduate and he will slot in nicely at 157...then you likely have Hunter, Mic, and Bo all in a row, which will be a beastly sequence (and then probably Myles Martin/Mike Martin, Courts, Snyder, and Tav/Haines to close out).

As for the Graham prospects for OSU down the road, they are numerous. Mitch Moore at 113 might well be the next "thing"...he is wrestling up against guys 20-30 lbs. heavier than him in practice and being competitive. Might end up being the #1 overall guy at his weight for the next 4 years. No idea what his thoughts are on OSU, way too early...wearing a VTech shirt but those guys rotate their college shirts almost daily. Eli Seipel was very impressive at 126 as well and is headed to Pitt (one of our lone seniors)...he could do damage there...every bit as impressive as Rodriguez if not more. Rocky Jordan at 132 might be the best of any of the Jordans...the loss to Kelly at Ironman was a fluke imo and he has a chance to avenge it this weekend at the Holiday Tourney in Vandalia. He will probably fill out up near the 170 range I would say and he will likely be a Buckeye like his brothers (they both love OSU/Coach Ryan). Ryan Thomas at 138 is a beast freshman who just had a bad showing at Ironman...seriously keep your eye on him. Brent Moore at 145 is very, very tough...ranked #9 right now as a junior but can hang with/beat anyone. Could definitely get looked at by OSU. Kyle Lawson at 152 is a sophomore that has a chance to be a 4x state champ...very aggressive kid in a senior-laden weight (ranked #20 right now at 152)...he will definitely get looked at next year. And finally, we already know Marinelli flipped to Iowa but he is a very good kid and extremely talented. I think he is going to be instantly in contention to AA, his body already looks college ready. Lots of kids to watch, particularly the big 3 freshman but in sum, you can see why Graham is so stacked this year...likely the best team we've had in terms of depth.
