Ohio State Wrestling (2015/2017/2018 B1G Champs, 2015 National Champs, 2019 National Runners-up)

For those who follow closely, 133 has been interesting trying to see the balance between Bouzakis and Davino. Didn't Davino win the wrestle-off, but Bouzakis is essentially the starter? I'm not sure if they are trying to save a redshirt for Davino, but it seems like he's shown better between the two of them.
I believe if Davino wrestles against PSU he'll wrestle at the B1G's...

I agree with you. I can’t help but think Bouzakis is unfortunately on his way out. He is an enigma. One match he looks unstoppable and the next he has that “HEW” gaze. Whatever he decides, he is easy to cheer for.

There is a fairly reasonable discussion about development going on at Yappi. I saw you occasionally chime in. It’s tough to put a finger on the state of the program. I try not to be too critical either, but maybe mix it up in the staff a bit. Does loyalty override the need to win? Need, not want nor desire.

One poster mentioned this and I completely agree with the thought that OSU needs to showcase Davino, Welsh, and Mendez on the senior circuit of freestyle. They need to be the face of the program/RTC. Highlight their path. I would love to know how much involvement Coleman Scott has too. If he is the breath of fresh air the program needs, build upon that! Maybe there are some former studs who are still vying for spots on the men’s team that aren’t affiliated with a specific room’s RTC. What’s Nolf doing right now? Is he with NLWC? Pry Dake away. What is Mark Hall doing? What about the Hidlay brothers? Where are Joey McKenna and Luke Pletcher training/coaching? Young guys that had good to great collegiate careers that are either still mixing it up at the senior level or who are starting their coaching careers.

I fully understand that what I type is easier said than done, but maybe look outside the program a bit or try to bring back dudes who were here and left for whatever reason.

The plan was to redshirt Davino and Rocco for a run at a title next year. That will not happen now after all of the recruiting misses, so they may pull the redshirt to try and keep Davino at OSU. He is the better wrestler and Bouzakis could very well transfer to Pitt to be with his brother next year anyways. At this point I say let Davino go at it, we're not winning a team title in the foreseeable future if we are being honest about a reality check, so let's get the best individual performances possible and finish as high as we can in the team race.

Saw this right after I posted. I think Bouzakis will not be on next year's team and I'm not being negative on him, but something is just not working for him at OSU. Kind of shocked because coming in he was on the same level as Mendez, then just fizzled out. To me, you might as well just let Davino go for a run kind of like what we did with Myles Martin...very little tape on the guy pulling the RS this late in the game.

On the state of the program, Ryan made a calculated move to redshirt Davino and Welsh with the hopes of landing some combination of Blaze, Bassett and Forest (and keeping Vince Bouzakis). I don't think loyalty factored in at all, but the plan didn't work and now you have to be concerned on keeping Davino and Welsh if you don't wrestle them...we cannot lose either of them.

In terms of what the room looks like with veteran wrestlers, they do need to make a splash with some big names for the RTC in Columbus, whether is is OSU wrestlers or others. We are not even close to the trajectory PSU, Iowa, and OK State are on right now. So if we want to compete with those schools, change needs to happen (and I don't mean fire Ryan). If we are fine trying to land in the top 6-10 at nationals, then keep doing what we are doing.

I'm not quite sure about that either...

This announcement on ohiortc page.

From CKLV.

Scott was at CKLV sporting Buckeye gear.

Below was Jan 31

The Buckeyes are tapping into the wisdom of Japanese World and Olympic coaches and wrestlers while hosting members of their national team. Ryan said having high-octane partners such as 2021 Olympic gold medalist, Takuto Otoguro, World silver medalist Yoshinosuke Aoyagi, 2024 Olympic silver medalist Daichi Takatani, 2024 Olympic team member Hayato Ishiguro, along with their coach, Shogo Maeda, has proven invaluable for his staff and wrestlers.

“Coleman Scott is friends with their coach,” Ryan said. “He was able to organize bringing them here. When you get Olympic champions and World medalists added to your room, and the international perspective of what they think and do in certain positions, it’s incredible for our guys.”

And in between all of that I read.

"he never moved from Stillwater but was traveling back and forth to Columbus."

With all of that, still no idea...

Projected lineups taken from OSU’s official athletics page.

125-No. 21 Brendan McCrone (R-So.) vs. No. 7 Luke Lilledahl (Fr.) MD for Lilledahl 4-0 PSU (McCrone could hit a big move, that could change things)
133-No. 11 Nic Bouzakis (R-So.) vs. No. 8 Braeden Davis (So.) Dec. for Davis, PSU, 7-0 PSU (Davino will beat Davis imo if they wrestle him, if they don't Bouzakis will likely fall by decision)
141-No. 1 Jesse Mendez (Jr.) vs. No. 3 Beau Bartlett (Sr.+) Dec. for Mendez,, PSU 7-3 (Mendez is dialed in and knows Bartlett, I see him winning narrowly)
149-No. 7 Dylan D'Emilio (Gr.) vs. No. 2 Shayne Van Ness (So.) MD for Van Ness, PSU 11-3. I would like to see this stick to a decision, but really don't think it'll happen.
157-Brandon Cannon (R-Fr.) vs. No. 1 Tyler Kasak (So.) Fall for Kasak, PSU 17-3. Maybe a tech fall, but that is best case.
165-Brock Herman (R-Fr.) vs. No. 1 Mitchell Mesenbrink (So.) Fall for Mesenbrink, PSU 23-3. Best case scenario is a tech fall again.
174-No. 5 Carson Kharchla (Gr.) vs. No. 2 Levi Haines (Jr.) Dec. for Kharchla, PSU 23-6 (this may seem wild, but Carson is wrestling really well...this will at the very least be a hard fought match)
184-No. 18 Ryder Rogotzke (So.) vs. No. 1 Carter Starocci (Gr.) Dec. for Starocci, PSU 26-6 (Starocci is great but he keeps the score down)
197-No. 23 Seth Shumate (R-So.) vs. No. 3 Josh Barr (R-Fr.) Fall for Barr, PSU 33-6 (Barr will get bonus points here but at a time the dual is determined)
HWT-No. 9 Nick Feldman (R-So.) vs. No. 2 Greg Kirkvliet (Sr.+) TF for Kirkvliet, PSU 38-6 (Feldman doesn't get pinned, but this will be where we turn off the TV...there is no reason to watch this match as an OSU fan)
Not trying to be negative at all, but here is my honest projection in red. 38-6 PSU. That might be optimistic.

Yeah, this is going to be a tough one. I’ll take the other path and be slightly more optimistic.

125-No. 21 Brendan McCrone (R-So.) vs. No. 7 Luke Lilledahl (Fr.) Fingers crossed, I’m going with McCrone and his length. 3-0 Bucks
133-No. 11 Nic Bouzakis (R-So.) vs. No. 8 Braeden Davis (So.) Bouzakis gets Kilkeary’s revenge. 6-0 Bucks If Davino goes, he slaps Braeden around for 7 minutes. Still…6-0 Bucks
141-No. 1 Jesse Mendez (Jr.) vs. No. 3 Beau Bartlett (Sr.+) Jesse has Beau’s number, although it’ll be close. 9-0 Bucks
149-No. 7 Dylan D'Emilio (Gr.) vs. No. 2 Shayne Van Ness (So.) Van Ness with the MD. 9-4 Bucks
157-Brandon Cannon (R-Fr.) vs. No. 1 Tyler Kasak (So.) Kasak TF. 9-9
165-Brock Herman (R-Fr.) vs. No. 1 Mitchell Mesenbrink (So.) Mesenbrink TF. 14-9 PSU
174-No. 5 Carson Kharchla (Gr.) vs. No. 2 Levi Haines (Jr.) I think Carson gets it done here too. He’s wrestling like a mobile and hostile fire hydrant. 14-12 PSU
184-No. 18 Ryder Rogotzke (So.) vs. No. 1 Carter Starocci (Gr.) Ryder keeps it interesting early, then Carter’s skill takes over. Starocci with the MD. 18-12 PSU
197-No. 23 Seth Shumate (R-So.) vs. No. 3 Josh Barr (R-Fr.) Barr sticks Shumate. 24-12 PSU. Somewhere, though, Rocco is lurking and keeping receipts.
HWT-No. 9 Nick Feldman (R-So.) vs. No. 2 Greg Kirkvliet (Sr.+) Kerkvliet with the MD. 28-12 final.

Looking tough for the Bucks to qualify at 157, 165, and 197 for NCAAs unless they have a great showing at the Big Ten championships. I would hope Ryder makes the cut or at least can get an at large bid at 184. I think he deserves one.

I could see 125-141 could be a waterfall of wins by decision. Certainly will not count out McCrone/Bouzakis (or Davino)/Mendez for that part of the dual. Then we hit a brick wall unfortunately with the only realistic win being Kharchla, I'm with you that he is absolutely peaking right now, he can pull it off against Haines even though Haines is a freaking monster. The dual will be a loss, but its a matter of how much and hoping for some quality wins on the resume.

We won't have a qualifier at 157/165 unless we have one of Paddy or e'Than back. I think Shumate at least gets an at-large bid at 197 even if B1G's don't go well. Even if we get qualifiers though, we could be seeing a lot of two and outs. But just get them in and hope for the best.

RTC funding through 2022. Interesting numbers.

That is staggering. Where did you find that? I wonder what the difference is between the Penn State club and the Nittany Lion club. I think the Pennsylvania club is out of Philly and there are a lot of clubs that fall under Titan Mercury’s umbrella too. I wonder if the main TMWC is for athletes that do not want to be affiliated with a specific RTC. I met Royce Alger when he was in Cleveland for the NCAAs. Good dude. He’s got a lot of stories. He was out of his mind shit faced, but we spoke for about an hour or so.
