Ohio State Wrestling (2015/2017/2018 B1G Champs, 2015 National Champs, 2019 National Runners-up)

Bo Bassett is set to announce his college choice tomorrow. He was interviewed on Flo today where he narrowed his decision down to four schools: Iowa, Oklahoma State, Penn State, and Virginia Tech. We’ll see how much influence his choice has on Jax Forrest too.

This is a bummer.
We needed that one bad to make up for Blaze and we were going all in for his commitment. My guess is OK State. The gap between us and PSU/OK State/Iowa is about to get larger.

Chose Iowa…where’s @Thump with his bagmen post ($5MM NIL?!?!)? I’m not entirely surprised though. He has some Spencer Lee in him. Good luck. I hope he does well. He has a bright future especially in freestyle with the world team and hopefully Olympics at some point.

Edit: some silly numbers being tossed out there for his NIL package. Who knows if that’s true.

Looking back I shouldn't be too surprised, even though there were strong indications we were out in front for awhile and then fizzled out. This recruiting cycle has not been kind to us. Swung for the fences on Blaze, Bassett, Forest and V. Bouzakis. I can't fault that strategy at all, but when you wind up 0-4 after expending significant resources recruiting those guys...it stings. I don't even think we will be top 10 in recruiting classes for this year, so absent some top portal transfers next year looks more bleak.

On portal transfers, I am also concerned on Welsh despite his social media posts (word is he was fuming about the redshirt initially, but maybe he has come around on it) and N. Bouzakis (I would be on a transfer to Pitt to wrestle with his brother after this season). Trying not to be a debbie downer, but this was supposed to be a rebuilding year with redshirts and top commits coming in next season to make a real run at a title. Imo its time to readjust any such hopes in the upcoming seasons...PSU, Iowa and OK State are only furthering the gap between all the other teams.

I'll always support the team no matter what, but we really need some surprise commitments and portal transfers for a competitive season next year.

I do wonder how much more gas in the tank Tom Ryan has. He's been at OSU for nearly 20 years, recruiting is getting tougher, NIL has to annoy the hell out of him, he's obviously been through a lot physically, that 2015-19 peak is getting further and further in the rear view mirror, you have what seems to be some young coaching talent on the staff....I'm not pushing him out by any means, but it'd be understandable if he questioned how much longer he wants to do this.

Yeah, it’s interesting all around. I like Tom Ryan. He is about as solid of a human being there is. I reached out to him personally about an issue I was working on, and he responded. He didn’t have to, but he was incredibly gracious and kind.

Does anybody know what our “room” looks like? Meaning, aside from the roster, who is challenging our wrestlers on a daily basis? How does ours compare to Oklahoma State’s, PSU’s, NC State’s, Cornell’s, New Jersey’s, etc.? These rooms all have RTCs that have been feeding our national team. I don’t have that answer.

There was talk several years ago when Snyder left that the Ohio RTC was going to pull in J’den Cox. I believe we did for a hot minute, but he left just as soon as he got there. Joey McKenna is not in the room either, but is actively on the senior team. I know Moore left his shoes on the mat, but I think he is around. I’m not being critical, and I would love to know your guys’ thoughts on this.

Well said. Ryan has been incredible up to this point, but I think he's starting to fade some. Like you, I'm not calling for his job whatsoever...but you made all the right points. We needed this recruiting class to propel us back forward even though I do think we've wrestled well.

Can't help what happened to Sammy, but the decision to redshirt Rocco still baffles it. That was done in the prospect of bringing in some of the aforementioned recruits. None of that happened and now we have roster gaps next year, plus potentially disgruntled stars on the roster that were redshirted and may very well transfer. We'll see if Ryan rebounds on those fronts, but it's looking like a real step backwards right now if the goal is to compete for a Natty.

Love Ryan as well, I'm just also curious about longevity right now for the reasons above.

You bring up what the room looks like and great point. I mean, I'm not there but you at least have two very quality assistants in Bo and Logie who still go at it. But you hit a great point that no Snyder, McKenna, etc. definitely hurts. We used to have that going for us and now...not so much. Easy thing to overlook, but it makes a huge difference. Not really sure what to do about that from Ryan's perspective, but it's not ideal for the team.

Not trying to paint a dire picture or anything, but to be a top 5 team moving forward there needs to be adjustments.

Ended up losing to Minny in the final match, but Cannon and Herman at 157/165 pretty much spelled out a loss, the bonus points there was the major difference. That said, there were some highlights. McCrone's MD against a highly ranked opponent was encouraging, Shumate hung in tough, Kharchla and D'Emilio had solid wins, and Davino got a win over a ranked guy.

We beat Indiana 27-13 and honestly not many good things I have to say about that one. Ryder and Kharchla finished us out strong and Mendez was himself with a tech, but lackluster performance...McCrone turns around with a loss and Bouzakis loses to an unranked opponent. Really not sure what to make of some of these individual performances down the stretch, but hopefully some of these guys peak at the right time...the only two I have strong confidence in getting to the podium is Mendez (obviously) and Kharchla (he's on fire right now). The rest are complete wildcards for the most part.

Outlook now is we dual PSU at home on 2/14 to finish the dual season and that will be an absolute drubbing...they beat Iowa 30-8, so I will make my predictions quick. We will lose at 125, 133 is a loss if the backup for PSU is not in (unless we put in Davino, who could make it a match), 141 will be another battle with Mendez and Bartlett that could go either way, 149 will be a loss likely with bonus points, 157-165 will be tech falls or pin losses for sure, 174 might be a chance for a win with how Kharchla is wrestling but probably not against Haines, 184 the score may end up looking somewhat close but it will be a loss unless Ryder hits some crazy throw, 197 will be a bonus point loss, and HWT will be a major or a tech loss. My prediction is 41-3 PSU where we manage a win in there somehow, maybe 38-6 if we pull an upset. Not trying to depress everyone, but it is not going to be fun for us to watch, so don't cancel any Valentine's Day plans for this one.

For those who follow closely, 133 has been interesting trying to see the balance between Bouzakis and Davino. Didn't Davino win the wrestle-off, but Bouzakis is essentially the starter? I'm not sure if they are trying to save a redshirt for Davino, but it seems like he's shown better between the two of them.
