Ohio State Wrestling (2015/2017/2018 B1G Champs, 2015 National Champs, 2019 National Runners-up)

Buckeyes come back to win at Northwestern after losing at Iowa.
The fourth-ranked Ohio State wrestling team won eight matches on the way to defeating No. 15 Northwestern 33-6 yesterday at Welsh-Ryan Arena in Evanston, Ill. The Buckeyes improved to 7-1 overall and 1-1 in the Big Ten. Northwestern is 4-3, 0-2.

Nikko Triggas pinned Northwestern’s Dominick Malone at 125 pounds, giving him 44 career falls, fourth in Ohio State history. Buckeyes redshirt freshman Kyle Visconti, competing at 133 pounds, earned his first career victory with a 6-5 decision over Garrison White. Visconti was leading 4-3 in the third period when he scored a takedown with 27 seconds left for a 6-3 lead.

Ohio State sophomore Hunter Stieber, at 141 pounds, improved to 20-0 this season with a 10-5 victory over Pat Greco.

I thought this match might be a little closer:(
Minnesota defeated Ohio State 25-9 in a matchup of two of the nation?s top five-ranked teams.

The No. 3 Golden Gophers (9-1, 3-0 Big Ten) overcame a 9-8 deficit at intermission against the No. 5 Buckeyes (7-2, 1-2) by scoring the final 16 points. Ohio State lost all five matches between 165 pounds and heavyweight.

The Buckeyes were mathematically eliminated from winning when No. 9 Andrew Campolattano lost 5-2 to No. 14 Scott Schiller at 197 pounds.

?There are not many positives we can take away for tonight?s match,? Ohio State coach Tom Ryan said. ?Nikko Triggas did a great job and wrestled hard. Peter Capone did a good job, as well as showing energy.?

Triggas, Hunter Stieber and Cam Tessari earned victories for the Buckeyes. Undefeated sophomore Logan Stieber missed his third straight match because of an injury.

High school notebook: CVCA?s Nathan Tomasello ranked No. 1 in nation
By Michael Beaven Beacon Journal sports writer

Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy senior wrestler Nathan Tomasello continues to hold the No. 1 ranking in the country at 120 pounds, according to Amateur Wrestling News and InterMat.

Tomasello won his third Top Gun Tournament championship Saturday at Alliance by defeating Perry junior David Bavery 18-7 in the final round.

Tomasello, an Ohio State University recruit, will seek his fourth state title in March.

Logan Stiebler will be back for tonight's match against :bonk: Illinois
Time and training are of the essence to Logan Stieber, so he fielded a reporter’s questions while running two miles on a treadmill before Ohio State’s wrestling team began practice.

Doing an interview during a workout isn’t surprising to anyone who knows Stieber, the reigning 133-pound NCAA and Big Ten champion.

“That’s why he’s a champ,” OSU coach Tom Ryan said.

A treadmill’s hum and the sound of Stieber’s pounding feet revealed his eagerness about returning to competition tonight against Illinois in Oak Harbor, Ohio, his first match since mid-December. The third-year sophomore has missed OSU’s past five matches because of a hamstring injury.

“I feel great,” said Stieber, the team captain. “I’ve been full-go in practice the past two weeks. My weight is better than ever. I’m excited.”

OSU was 6-0 after Stieber won two matches — improving his record to 15-0 — against Maryland and Hofstra in the Grapple at the Garden in New York on Dec. 16. But he twice hurt his left hamstring during practice before a Jan. 4 match at Iowa.

Stieber didn’t wrestle and the Buckeyes lost to Iowa. Results from an MRI on his leg suggested patience was in order.

“You’ve got to make sure it heals properly because a hamstring injury can just linger,” Ryan said.

So Ryan kept his All-American from Monroeville, Ohio — who had advanced to the final at the U.S. Olympic wrestling trials last March — sidelined during OSU’s win at Northwestern, home loss to Minnesota, win at Indiana, and home victory over Wisconsin.

A warm-up for next week when we take on sCum
In front of a sold-out crowd at Oak Harbor High School, fifth-ranked Ohio State defeated No. 6 Illinois 25-9 in a Big Ten wrestling showdown.

Defending national champion Logan Stieber, a 133-pounder, returned from a December injury to pin Darryl Thomas in 2:04 to highlight the Buckeyes’ night.

Hunter Stieber (141) notched his team-leading 24th victory with a 10-2 major decision over Illini star Stephen Rodrigues, and Peter Capone (heavyweight) closed out the match with a 2-0 shutout of Chris Lopez.

Big win to be sure...handled a really solid team in Illinois. Now we have that state up north in basketball and wrestling, let's get it done twice.
I have been meaning to ask you since you are one of BP's wrestling gurus is why is Ohio State so weak in the top weight classes. It seems like for the past couple years we have been very weak in that area and don't seem to recruit very many guys in the upper weight classes. Also, what the hell is that guy from St. Paris Graham wrestling for PSU:huh:

Because we are young 165+...you just don't typically see many freshmen or sophomores in the top 3-6 nationally. Martin was tops in the country back in high school but is having growing pains at 165 as a freshman. I expect him to be a stud down the road. Heflin is a junior at 174 and can wrestle with about anyone in the country, but I think he looks worse than he is since the Big Ten is stacked at 174 this year. Courts is an absolute stud at 184 and should contend for a national title come his junior or senior year, but tough to compete at the top level as a freshman. Camp is tough at 197 as well for a sophomore but it just doesn't help to have such young guys from 165-197...likely not an AA in there this year other than Heflin. As for Capone, I've never been overly impressed and he is a junior. If we can get him to AA for us next year, it would be huge.

All in all, this isn't our year to make a run at the title...PSU, OK State, and Iowa are clearly out in front. If we can sneak in to #3 or #4 at nationals it would be huge, an I wouldn't rule it out since Ryan gets our guys to peak then. But next year we should have a GREAT shot and a stacked lineup, as we only lose Triggas and arguably get an upgrade with Roberts/Tomasello. Looks like this, obviously subject to weight changes:

125: Roberts (was #1 at 119 in high school)/Tomasello (currently ranked #1 in the country at 125 in high school). McDonough graduates from Iowa, but Megaludis will be a junior for PSU and likely #1 nationally.

133: L. Stieber (national champion last year). Might move up a weight but clearly the best wrestler on our team and will only be a junior...nobody can touch the kid at this weight. Ramos will be a senior for Iowa and is #2 behind Stieber, plus OK State has the #4 kid that will be a senior, but we have the clear advantage.

141: H. Stieber (AA at 6th place as a freshman, #2 nationally right now). Hunter is an animal and Ballweg from Iowa (#6 nationally) graduates and PSU doesn't have anyone there. Only problem may be that Kendric Maple will be a senior for Oklahoma and is currently #1, although I think Hunter can take him.

149: Tessari (AA at 4th place as a freshman, currently #19 at 149). After an outstanding freshman year, I really think injuries are bothering Tessari. But he is a great wrestler and if he gets back to form, the sky is the limit. If not, Ian Paddock is a great wrestler behind him and will be a senior. Luckily many top guys at this weight graduate, although A. Alton from PSU will be a junior as well next year and will give Cam some stiff competition.

157: Demas (ranked #19 as a sophomore at 157 now)/Bo Jordan (#1 wrestler overall in high school from Graham). Demas has his moments but gets injured alot and Bo is a freaking stud, so I think Bo wins out here. Could also see Paddock up here. Whoever it is will get tested though, especially if St. John stays at this weight for his senior year (#1 right now as a junior at 157 and took runner-up last year to Dake, the nation's top wrestler overall). Also has D. Alton from PSU who is #4 at 157 and will be a junior next year. How Bo adjusts determines how good we are here imo...if he can AA, it would be huge.

165: Martin (see above). Really think he will adjust and be an AA as a sophomore. However, this weight is stacked with kids coming back with Taylor for PSU, Caldwell for OK State, and Moore for Iowa. He is going to need to get competitive here (not ever going to touch Taylor, but possibly the other two).

174: Heflin (AA last year at 5th place, #7 at 174 currently). As a senior, he will need to be consistent and place top 3 for us. Perry from OK State (#1), Brown from PSU (#4), and Evans from Iowa (#6) will all be ahead of him. Kid can beat anyone, including Perry but he needs to pull out a big performance at nationals.

184: Courts (#15 as a freshman currently, highly ranked in HS). All the talent in the world and many are graduating here. Unfortunately for Courts, Ruth returns here for PSU as a senior and is basically not going to be beat. However, a high AA finish helps us with team points.

197: Campolattano (currently #14 at 197 and was #1 in high school at his weight)/Kyle Snyder (#3 wrestler overall in HS and #1 at 220). My feeling is Camp hangs onto his spot and he is a talented guy. Lots of guys in front of him are graduating, although Rosholt from OK State will be back as a senior. I still think a high AA here is likely.

Hwt: Capone (currently #12 at Hwt). Has a few guys coming back in front of him, one being Telford of Iowa (#6). If Capone could AA it would be huge but it just seems he can't get a signature win. Perhaps Camp or Snyder could bump up, though it doesn't look likely.

- Overall: I honestly think we have an AA in every class except maybe 2 or 3 next year. Further, we should have at least one champion, possibly up to 3. Only issue is if PSU gets more big points for finalists, as all of Ruth, Taylor, and Magaludis should win it all. Either way, we will be more experienced then and make a serious run.

As for David Taylor, he idolized Sanderson growing up. Simply put, wherever Sanderson was coaching was where Taylor was going...he switched from Iowa State to PSU almost immediately after Sanderson left. There was some OSU talk but he only looked at the Buckeyes to be polite.

I have to spread some rep around before I can rep you again but I just wanted to thank you for the comprehensive post. Very educational and can't wait until next year.

No prob. And the beautiful thing about wrestling is you have both the team and individual component...though the team likely won't compete for the national title this year, it will be fun watching the Stieber brothers make a run. Logan has a chance to be a 4-time national champ. Plus there are plenty of guys who could crack into the AA ranks aside from those two, so the tourney as a whole will still be fun to watch.

Just rewatched on BTN2GO and saw some really good wrestling. Here is my synopsis (and I can do this for some of the bigger matches if anybody wants me to?):

125: Classic Triggas and a pretty good effort against the #15 Boyle. Really aware of where he is at on top and an excellent scrambler. One of the few wrestlers I see pick top and it actually makes tactical sense when it works...he gets his 1 point for riding time the same as if he picked bottom but he is really dangerous with his pin combos, so it gives him a shot at the homerun. However, when someone is as defensive as Boyle it makes it tough to get backpoints to get the win. Tough start and I'm not sure I would have Triggas take top when he wrestles someone as good as Boyle. Kid can wrestle from his feet and from the bottom, let him do it.

133: Logan being a hammer as usual. The turn he was using was something I've honestly never seen before...some type of power tilt swithced over from half, but he damn near pins himself when he does it. Works though. Beautiful switch from the bottom in the 2nd, took all of 2 seconds to do. Really great job of blocking of Bruno's arm for an explosive step over...if he kept it tight, he would've got the fall. Got the tech fall quick though.

141: Great single and switch to the double for Hunter. Wore Hillock down with the double arm-bar and credit to Hillock for fighting off his back twice with that figure 4 sunk in deep on him...I can tell you that is NOT a fun position to be in. Hunter needs to keep low and sink once he has the figure 4 in, he kept letting his legs slip up the head. He's also taking shots from a mile away without a setup, needs to cut that out when he faces better competition. Really would've liked to see him get more points.

149: Great job by Paddock of setting the tone and getting offensive. Really leverages the arm well and keeps pressure on Grajales. Glad Paddock just cut him loose when he was getting loose with his hips on top. Great job of getting in on the leg but he needs to try and finish quicker...can't try to switch to a double that late...just finish quickly with a single leg progression. Crazy position in the air from the bottom in the 3rd had me laughing. Really needed to quit going for the reversal and just get the escape. Good effort and I would have liked to see how Tessari would've matched up here though.

157: Nice duck under to a double but once he had the single on his feet, he just needed to keep working the tree top...going to the mat with the single is just asking for a wizzer and a stalemate. Hits the spladle! I haven't seen that since junior high  I don't know if his shoulder blades touched but great fall.

165: Martin looks nothing like he did in high school unfortunately. He is quick with his shots but he is keeping no pressure on the leg and doesn't even look like he is trying to finish the shot...just sits there. He has really gotta step it up and compete with guys like Massa, especially considering Massa is also a true freshman. If he doesn't step it up, Bo is going to come in and take his spot next year.

174: Great first takedown by Heflin, really quick to sprawl, get behind Yates, and roll through with the granby. Really wrestled smart in the 2nd and didn't get greedy on a tough defensive from Yates. Quick escape in the 3rd. Not so smart getting pushed out early in the third, that will always get you a stalling warning. Good job recovering though with the counter-shots and work off his feet. Really well wrestled match overall and a big win for Heflin.

184: Gave up a silly takedown on the edge right away, but way to finish the head inside single quickly by pressuring the free leg (take notes Martin). Love using the optional start to pressure into a shot right away. Great job off his feet of setting up his shots and finishing with urgency. Dominated the second with some great takedowns and really broke his opponent there. Like the confidence in the 3rd to cut him and try to get the takedown for the major decision, but I personally would have rather seen him try to ride it out.

197: Nothing in the 1st. Good escape in the first 5 seconds by Courts. Really slick slideby at the end of the 2nd, definitely had the takedown but perhaps just not in time I guess? Hate watching wrestlers walk back to the center of the mat...run back there. Patient wrestling by Courts when Huntley got in on the leg...kept his position and when Huntley went high, Courts attacked. Great job wrestling up a weight by Courts.

Hwt: Didn't bother watching with Capone out.

Side notes: Those Golden Singlets were awesome, I didn't know they did that for wrestling. Overall a good showing heading into our big matchup with PSU tomorrow.

Preview for PSU:

125 lbs. #12 Triggas vs. #2 Megaludis: Triggas is really unpredictable but we really need a steady performance from him and he CANNOT give up bonus points. Doubt he pulls an upset.

PSU 3-OSU 0

133 #1 L. Stieber vs. NR Connoway: Really need bonus points from Logan here and I think we get them in a big way to swing the lead back with a pin or tech fall.

OSU 5-PSU 3

141 #2 H. Stieber vs. NR Pearsall: Need another big set of bonus points here and again, I think we get it. Hunter needs to be more active than he was against *ichigan though.

OSU 10-PSU 3

149 #19 Tessari/NR Paddock vs. #7 A. Alton: Really hope we have Tessari back, as I like him matching up again Alton better here. Doubt we give up bonus points (again, we cannot) and I really think Cam can win it. However, I'll have to say Alton wins by decision

OSU 10-PSU 6

157 #19 Demas vs. #5 D. Alton: Demas has a ton of skill and has a tendency to surprise you, but Alton is too good to overcome. I see a major decision for Alton.

OSU 10-PSU 10

165 NR Martin vs. #2 Taylor: This match is going to be a bloodbath. Taylor gets the tech fall.

PSU 15-OSU 10

174 #7 Heflin vs. #5 Brown: I like Heflin in a slight upset here with a decision. Heflin has been wrestling really smart lately.

PSU 15-OSU 13

184 #16 Courts/NR Magrum vs. #1 Ruth: Not sure who wrestles here (couldn't find if Camp will be back at 197) but I see a major decision either way. As good as Courts and Magrum are wrestling, Ruth is simply an animal.

PSU 19-OSU 13

197 #16 Courts/#13 Campolatanno vs. #3 Wright: Wright has been on fire this year with an undefeated record and just pinned the #2 wrestler in the country. However, he does have a tendency to go close in matches aside from that. I think Courts keeps it to a decision and gives him a match.

PSU 22-OSU 13

Hwt #12 Capone vs. #19 Gingrich: I like Capone here in a close decision. Capone has been wrestling pretty tough as of late.

Final score: PSU 22-OSU 16

- If we can keep it that close, it will be respectable. However, this could really get out of hand if Triggas, Demas, and Tessari give up bonus points and Heflin loses. We need upsets at 149 and 157, bonus points, and wins at every weight we are favored to conceivably pull of the upset. Probably not our year to knock them off though, they are just too talented from top to bottom.
