Ohio State Wrestling (2015/2017/2018 B1G Champs, 2015 National Champs, 2019 National Runners-up)

COLUMBUS, Ohio- Behind seven victories, the fourth-ranked Ohio State wrestling team downed Kent State, 27-10, Friday night in St. John Arena. Hunter Stieber, Logan Stieber and Nikko Triggas scored bonus points for Ohio State as the squad moves to 4-0 in dual competition.

At 125 pounds, Triggas, a senior from Moraga, Calif., lifted Ohio State to a quick 6-0 lead following his 1:59 pin over Steve Mitchell. Triggas earned the 43rd pin of his career which ties him for fourth all-time in the Ohio State records book.

Stieber, the Buckeyes' No. 1 ranked wrestler at 133 pounds, remained undefeated (13-0) when he recorded an 18-1 technical fall over Kyle Bauer. Twelve of the redshirt-sophomore's 13 wins have been bonus point victories (92 percent) - two major decisions, three technical falls and seven falls.)

Hunter Stieber, also undefeated with a 16-0 record at 141 pounds, propelled the Scarlet and Gray to a 15-0 advantage following his 13-5 major decision vs. Lukas Kern. Backed by a trio of takedowns in the first period, Stieber owned a 6-2 advantage heading into the second period. Stieber, a sophomore from Monroeville, Ohio, added another pair of takedowns, two escapes and a riding time of 1:15 for the final score.

After sophomore Cam Tessari dropped a 10-3 decision to Nicholas Carr at 149 pounds, the Buckeyes won back-to-back matches at 157 and 165 pounds, respectively. Redshirt sophomore Josh Demas edged Mallie Shuster, 3-2, at 157 pounds before freshman Mark Martin beat Caleb Marsh, 2-1. An escape by Demas in the third period broke a 2-2 tie and the Buckeye from Westerville, Ohio, was able to hold on the remaining 1:54 seconds for the victory. After a scoreless first period, Martin trailed Marsh, 1-0, entering the final period, but a reversal by Martin with 37 seconds remaining sealed the Ohio State victory.

I don't know if I could be this mentally tough. I want that other piece of turkey:)
It’s Ohio State coach Tom Ryan’s policy that his wrestling team not compete during the holidays, but that doesn’t mean the wrestlers get any time off.

The Buckeyes wrapped up the first half of their season with two victories on Sunday in New York to remain undefeated. Their next competition won’t be until the new year.

In the meantime, the wrestlers are faced with the task of staying in shape and maintaining proper weight during the holidays.

“It’s the worst thing ever. Thanksgiving and Christmas are just terrible for eating,” Ohio State senior C.J. Magrum said. “It’s good to see your family, but everyone else is eating big meals and desserts, but you can’t really partake in that.”

The Buckeyes won’t hold another official practice until the end of next week, but the work will continue for the wrestlers.

During the break, the athletes are sent home with detailed individualized plans to keep them in shape and allow them to return from the break at their target weights.

“Some of them have a mentor back home to make sure that plan happens,” Ryan said. “We send the work out to the person, often a high-school coach, that can assist them and hold them accountable.”

Ryan said the plans never call for someone to skip a meal, but the wrestlers are required to track their calories each day and base that day’s workout on what they eat.

“You want to have another piece of turkey? OK, but your run just went from 45 minutes to an hour,” he said.

Remember these guys have been in the same position since they were freshmen in HS (or even younger).

I've been eating like a hog the last few holiday breaks to make up for all those years where I missed out  But holiday break is torture for a wrestler.

New recruit

Looks like we have a great upper weight guy coming!

On New Year?s Day, 2013, perhaps the nation?s most coveted JR, Kyle Snyder, made a pledge to the Ohio State Buckeyes in what is a well deserved and rewarding opportunity for a youngster with utmost talent and the character to match it.

Snyder burst on the high school scene by winning The Beast of the East, one of the nation?s premier in-season tournaments, as a Freshmen in 2010. And he?s never looked back. Wrestling 220lbs, he?s never lost a regular season match. He?s won all the major events, including Fargo, Super 32, Ironman, and FloNationals.

Huge get. #1 wrestlers in the country at their weight with Tomasello, Jordan, and now Snyder. Should be the top class in the country. Snyder is especially big if he can wrestle heavyweight for us.

Saw him last weekend at the Powerade Wrestling Tournament at CanonMac High School where he was named Most Outstanding Wrestler of the tournament after scoring a 16-6 major decision in the finals. You can go here to watch the final.

OSU heads to Iowa this Friday at 8:00 p.m. The match will be on BTN.

Preview:

125: #1 McDonough MD #12 Triggas - 4-0 Iowa

McDonough cuts a lot of weight and will be feeling the cut more during the dual than a tournament, but he is a monster, wrestling at Carver, and knows that points will be important. Hopefully Niko can keep the pace slow and ride for a while on top to keep the scoring down. I see this as either a 6-9 point McD win, and will predict the major based on being at home.

133: #1 L. Stieber Dec. #2 Ramos - 4-3 Iowa

This should be a great match. Ramos has been looking forward to this all year and will have his home crowd behind him. But Logan has been a monster all year, looking improved over last seasons national title campaign, where he beat Ramos three times.

141: #2 H. Stieber Dec. #8 Ballweg - 6-4 Ohio State

Hunter has looked great all year and has already defeated Mangrum, Port, and Nevinger with relative ease. I see a comfortable 2-4 point win for Hunter.

149: #19 Kelly Dec. #14 Tessari - 7-6 Iowa

First, I'm not sure if Cam or Ian will be wrestling here for OSU. Ian looked good at the weight in NY, but wasn't going against top flight competition. Kelly is solid but not great and definitely beatable for both. But it seems all but assured that Iowa will pull of an upset at home (see OSU doing the same at home last year) and this seems like a prime weight for that to happen. Gut says OSU win but brain is telling me something else. Brain usually loses in these situations, but going with it anyway.

157: #1 St. John MD Demas - 11-6 Iowa

Demas beat a one-legged DSJ last year, so I think DSJ will be out to run up the score this year. Demas has been hard to get a read on, as he started off solid, though with a lack of offense, then started to get lit up, then seems to have gotten things back on track a bit. This will be a loss - the question is just how big?

165: #19 Moore Dec. Martin - 14-6 Iowa

Martin just has not been getting it done, as he has been thrown right into the fire this year with Garcia apparently being unavailable. Another match that I could see being a MD for Iowa, but hopefully Martin can hold it to a 6-7 point loss.

174: #7 Evans Dec. #2 Heflin - 17-6 Iowa

Heflin has been out for a while now and though I think he will wrestle am not 100% sure. I imagine that he will be rusty. Even if he is not, this is still a very tough match in a very tough venue against a very strong opponent. Nick has been great at keeping matches close and pulling out 1-2 point wins, but in this case the cards seem stacked against that.

184: #9 Lofthouse Dec. #16 Courts - 20-6 Iowa

If the match was at OSU I could see this one being a potential upset, but not at Iowa. Lofthouse will be a great test for Kenny, but I'm taking the more seasoned wrestler at home. But definitely someone Kenny can beat in a few months at a neutral site.

197: #9 Campolattano Dec. Burak - 20-9 Iowa

Camp should cruise and bonus isn't out of the question.

HVY: #4 Telford Dec. #13 Capone - 23-9 Iowa

Pete is a gamer but Telford is huge. Will be a tough matchup for Pete.

For OSU to win, they have to have 149 and 174 and they either need to avoid bonus or have someone pick up bonus. They also have to have 133. 149 and 174 are both exceedingly winnable, but will be tough and I gave the edge to the Iowa wrestlers because 1) they are at Carver and 2) they are out for revenge after losing last year. No bonus at 125, 157, 165, and HVY will be crucial, as will potential bonus from either Hunter or Camp.

Interesting take stkoran. Really thoughtful and well-informed breakdown.

To me, Triggas has been more consistent this year but the problem is he has a kill or be killed mentality at heart. It is usually a MD-Pin, win or lose and with McDonough to spar with, likely lose. However, I see Paddock in the lineup and kicking ass. I don't know the deal with Tessari, but Paddock is looking tough this year and I do not see him losing to Kelly (even in a tough venue). Plus I don't see Heflin losing...kid is having a great year. Also, not sure Martin gives up a major...he has struggled a ton this year after coming in with such high expectations, but I think the talent is there to keep it close enough with Moore. Really interested to see what Courts can do as well, as he has been an enigma thus far.

Overall, I do agree it is going to be really tough to pull off the win on the raod. Of course being a dual it greatly depends on the momentum. I know momentum in a dual is tough to combat on the road from experience and hopefully the earlier weights get the job done. Either way, great breakdown brother!

I don't pay that much attention to wrestling but I'm watching this matchup tonight. Super tough looking match for the Buckeyes. Steiber is indeed out according to BTN. Visconti taking his place and looks outmatched on paper.
