Please correct me if I'm wrong, but don't they wrestle 'up'? Meaning going from the lightest weights to the heavyweights? It looks like OSU will be 'thick' in the earlies and the middle classes, rendering the heaver weights moot. (That's kinda my question).

Having said that, we've not had a great heavyweight since the guy that almost got on the Olympics, believe he's an assistant coach now..(Rowlands?)...

There is a random selection of a weight class (don't know exactly how they pick it) but you start at that class and go up; but then loop around to the lowest weight class and start working back up again too.

That way a team loaded a low weights can't close out a match before the upper weights come up.

Forgot about Rowlands leaving. It would be awesome to have him come back and get our higher weights up to where the lower weights are.

Wrestle offs tonight!

197 Campolattano over Ray
125 Triggas over Dijulius
133 L Stieber over Stone
141 Paddock over H Stieber?????
149 Tessari over Gordon
157 Demas over Rigel
165 Martin over Grandominico(157)
174 Heflin over O'Hara
184 Courts over Thomas
285/Heavyweight Capone over Elor

Unreal news with Paddock over Stieber. Paddock is a stud, but nobody saw that comming. It is a shame we can't bump around some to get them both in the lineup.

As for questions on "wrestling up"...alot of times they will just randomly draw a weight and it starts there for duals.

The team is going to be really interesting to watch develop. Martin is a flat out stud but 165 can be a tough weight for a freshy. With all the young talent, we still have many proven guys. Intermat has Triggas ranked #7 nationally, Logan Stieber (returning national champion) at #1, Hunter at #4 (shows how tough we are here with Paddock), Tessari at #5, Demas at #19, Heflin at #3, Courts at #14, Camp at #9, and Capone at #18. Looking at our roster, we have some absolute hammers that can get us bonus points and also a consistent bunch at nearly every weight. I really think this team is going to be dangerous in duals.

We will be tough of course this year, but adding Bo Jordan and Tomasello next year is going to make this team even more scary. Triggas is our only senior this year and one of Tomasello, DiJulius, or Roberts will be almost no dropoff at 125.

OSU has already wrestled in a couple tournaments so far, opening the season with basically the full squad at the Buffalo Invite, with a partial squad (redshirt candidates and young guys) wrestling in the MSU Open this past weekend.

UB Invite recap is here: http://www.ohiostatebuckeyes.com/sports/m-wrestl/recaps/110412aaa.html

COLUMBUS, Ohio? The fifth-ranked Ohio State wrestling team tallied 148 points en route to winning the UB Invitational Sunday at Alumni Arena in Buffalo, N.Y. In the Scarlet and Gray?s 2012-13 season-opening event, five Buckeyes won titles in their respective weight classes. Logan Stieber (133 pounds), Hunter Stieber (141 pounds), Josh Demas (157 pounds), Nick Heflin (174 pounds) and Peter Capone (HWT pounds) collected titles at the event.

Ohio State will begin its dual schedule Nov. 15 when it travels to Davidson, N.C., to take on Davidson at 7 p.m. The following day, the Buckeyes will face Virginia Tech at 7 p.m.

At the UB Invitational, a pair of weight classes featured all-Buckeye finals. At 133 pounds, L. Stieber and Johnni Dijulius were slated to wrestle in the final, but DiJulius forfeited the match to the 2012 Big Ten and NCAA champion Stieber. In the 141-pound matchup, H. Stieber edged Ian Paddock, 3-2.

The big intrigue here, of course, is Hunter beating Paddock, reversing the wrestle-off result. Hunter has the available redshirt, so it will be interesting to see what happens here. I will try to get MSU Open results up soon, but Hunter wrestled there as well, winning the tourney by beating 9th ranked Mitchell Port with ease. DiJulius and Camp also both wrestled at MSU, both finishing 2nd to tough opponents (Schopp, Kilgore). Triggas and Martin and Tessari have all struggled somewhat thus far. Courts started slow but won the Fr/So division at MSU.

Coming up, OSU has three duals in four days, taking on Davidson on Thursday (should be an OSU romp), Va Tech on Friday (will be a very tough dual), and Pitt at home on Sunday (another tough one).

I guess I don't understand why they can't bump one of the guys down in weight class to 149 or is Tessari (or the guy beneath him) that good that some bumping could not be done. I know that losing weight would be harmful but going down a weight class wouldn't be that difficult or am I way off:huh:

Paddock and Hunter are at 141, so they would be wrestling up a weight to go at 149. And Paddock was at 133 up until this year. Wrestling up 8 pounds may put either at a significant disadvantage. Moreover, Tessari is already manning the 149 spot, and he finished 4th in the country last year (though is off to a poor start so far this season), so it's not as if this is a hole in the lineup.

OSU beat down Davidson last night 40-3. Several backups wrestled and performed well. The only blemish was a 4-3 loss suffered by Heflin's backup Matt O'Hara.

Recording bonus point wins in six matches, the fifth-ranked Ohio State wrestling team downed Davidson, 40-3, in the Buckeyes' season dual opener Thursday in Davidson, N.C. Nikko Triggas, Randy Languis and C.J. Magrum provided six points each to the team score with pins. Logan Stieber added a technical fall at 133 pounds, while freshman Mark Martin and redshirt junior Peter Capone scored major decisions at 165 pounds and heavyweight, respectively.

Ohio State will continue its trip on the East Coast at 7 p.m. Friday when it faces No. 12 Virginia Tech at Cassell Coliseum in Blacksburg, Va. The Buckeyes will wrestle No. 18 Pittsburgh in their 2012-13 home opener at 2 p.m. Sunday in St. John Arena.

Ohio State takes care of Virginia Tech

What happened to the wrestling guys:huh:

http://www.ohiostatebuckeyes.com/sports/m-wrestl/recaps/111612aaa.html

COLUMBUS, Ohio? Holding on to an 11-10 lead with four matches remaining, the No. 5 Ohio State wrestling team (2-0) won four consecutive bouts between 174 pounds and heavyweight to pull out a 23-10 victory at No. 12 Virginia Tech Friday night at Cassell Coliseum in Blacksburg, Va.

Trailing only once following the opening match at 125 pounds, the Buckeyes held a narrow 8-7 advantage after the 149-pound bout before clinching their second dual win of the season on senior C.J. Magrum?s 7-4 decision over Derrick Borlie in the 197-pound matchup. A pair of takedowns in the third period lifted Magrum to victory. Tied 3-3 with 1:35 remaining, Magrum scored a crucial takedown, but Borlie answered with an escape for a 5-4 score. In the waning moments, Magrum recorded his second takedown of the match for the eventual victory.

Ohio State trailed Virginia Tech, 4-0, early on when senior 125-pounder Nikko Triggas dropped a 10-2 major decision to No. 9 Jarrod Garnett. However, sophomore Logan Stieber got the Buckeyes on the board when he recorded a 19-4 technical fall over Erik Spjut at 133 pounds. Stieber led Spjut, 5-1, after the first period and, 10-1, to start the third period and with four takedowns, plus riding time, amassed 19 points in his sixth win of the season.

In his 2012-13 dual meet debut, sophomore and 141-pounder Hunter Stieber secured an 8-5 decision vs. No. 11 Zach Neibert. Owning a slim 5-4 lead at the end of the second period, Stieber was able to escape Neibert?s clutch to increase his lead by two. Stieber then notched a takedown to secure the win despite an escape by Neibert with 30 seconds

Ohio State takes care of Pittsburgh

http://www.ohiostatebuckeyes.com/sports/m-wrestl/recaps/111812aaa.html

COLUMBUS, Ohio- A fast start that included two pins and a pair of major decisions in the first four matches helped lift the fifth-ranked Ohio State wrestling team to a 26-13 win over No. 18 Pittsburgh Sunday afternoon in St. John Arena. The Buckeyes improve to 3-0 on the season, while the Panthers drop to 0-2.

In all, Ohio State won six of 10 matches and had a 23-0 lead at the halfway mark. Back-to-back pins by senior Nikko Triggas and redshirt sophomore Logan Stieber at 125 and 133 pounds, respectively, immediately gave the Buckeyes a 12-0 advantage. Facing Godwin Nyama, Triggas, scored a takedown before pinning Nyama in 2:32. Stieber followed suit, pinning No. 7 Shelton Mack in 4:26. Stieber was up 8-0 before tallying six team points for the Scarlet and Gray.

Leading, 2-1, and, 5-1, after the first and second periods, sophomore Hunter Stieber added four points to the Buckeye score on a 10-2 major decision over Travis Shaffer in the 141-pound matchup. Sophomore 149-pounder Cam Tessari rebounded from his opening dual-season loss at Virginia Tech with an 11-3 major decision victory vs. Donnie Tasser. Holding on to a 4-1 lead after the first period, Tessari quickly got to work and increased his advantage to 8-2 after the second period.

One of the more exciting matches of the afternoon, it was a last second takedown by Josh Demas in the 157-pound bout that propelled the Buckeye redshirt sophomore to a 3-1 win against Troy Reaghard. Following a scoreless tie after the first period, an escape by Reaghard was the only scoring in the second. Demas answered Reaghard's escape with one of his own and as the more than 1,000 fans in St. John Arena were about to settle in for some overtime wrestling, Demas notched the takedown en route to his eighth win of the season.

Ohio State's Nick Heflin was the remaining Buckeye to put points on the board for the Scarlet and Gray. Wrestling at 174 pounds, the Buckeye redshirt-junior's riding time of 1:07 was the difference maker in a 3-3 score at the end of regulation.

CUYAHOGA FALLS: Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy senior wrestler Nathan Toma*sello’s long list of accomplishments got a little longer Saturday night when he won his third Ironman Wrestling Tournament title in The Dome at Walsh Jesuit High School.

The Ironman welcomed the top wrestlers from 18 different states, and has been called “The nation’s top wrestling tournament” by Sports Illustrated.

Tomasello, an Ohio State recruit, looked comfortable and in control and pinned Blair Academy senior Matt Kolodzik 3:22 into the match to win the 120-pound title. That’s his third title in as many weight classes and in as many years. And he made it look easy.
