Ohio State Women's Basketball (2023-24 B1G CHAMPS)

The Lady Bucks certainly have some experienced players to go with the newbies. Yeah, the big girl looks awesome, hope she's more mobile than the centers that we've had. Has been the limiting factor from prior years in my opinion. Cotie has taken over games before, and she'll need to take over more this year. Taylor Thierry (my personal fave), will also have to step up quite a bit, as will Maddy. Wish could take some of the earned experience, and transfer some to these very talented freshwomen, however. Kinda easy to forget that most have been playing club ball since they were six years old, so there's plenty of learned experience there. Anyway, hope springs eternal, and wishing the Lady Bucks a very good season (as I do with the men, certainly). Big shoes to fill, and comparisons will be made, but they still have to play the games. Go Bucks!

I just hope 1 or 2 assassins are developing as we speak that can simulate the 3 point shooting we've seen in the past. We have several players that are good to great in their roles we just need a couple of glue players that all of a sudden catch ligthening in a bottle. I think one of them could be Eboni Walker. She plays taller than she is and has a knack of making plays in the paint. God willing Maddie has been through enough just let her play a full basketball season. She's wearing 0 this year too!

Thought I saw enough of Maddie last year that she's healed completely, and that she trusts her legs. Am expecting her to be the leader, but also expect the freshwoman point guard to split some time with her. Maybe even getting more minutes as the season progresses? I'm hoping that McDuff is teaching how to play college D, as well as working on the 3 point jumpers. Bestbuck, that's where Eboni shines. She would give up 5-8" to the opposing center, and muscle her or block her away from the boards. And let's not forget her foul-line jumper that several times made the difference. Will be interesting to see who steps into the Jacy role, or maybe by committee?

Maddie has to become the Jacy replacement such is basically impossible. Jacy never ever got tired! If she can get back to her true Sophomore form she'll be huge for us. I'm confident that our D will be great again but we have to have someone with height come on to be a force as good as Eboni is, 6'5 is too much in the reach category. I'm picturing trying to play Cardoza types that you have to beat to win a championship.

Agreed that when Buckeyes get 'out of league' they face a different type of talent. Not sure who, but someone said, "You can't teach height". Well, you can teach height to move their feet better, shoot the 3, and all, but other than the rack (medieval punishment, not the bucket), gotta go with what you got. Will be anxious to see the new big girl, and hope that Ebonie works with her on how to use her body. Or that she's smart enough to see how Ebonie uses her body to work the opponents. Anyway, will be an interesting season. What with what talent remaining, savvy transfers, and some new, raw talent will be worth watching.

Last year, Mika got her 3's because the 'plan' was for her to shoot, make, and pull out their 5 to guard her, allowing Jacy, and Cotie to drive to the hoop. Kinda worked, until it didn't, and wouldn't have, unless Mika could have hit about 70% of her shots. Still miss Dorkas, who is playing for the Lynx now. PS, McDuff said he'd be filling his last asst coach slot, but had to wait until the WNBA season is over. Well, except for two, it is over. Anyone else thinking that he might be bringing back Katie Smith? Or is this just me wishin' and a prayin'?

Ajae Petty joins Ohio State’s roster to improve the Big Ten’s worst rebounding team

The Kentucky transfer gets one year to make her mark in Columbus.

What to Expect

Take a guess at what you can expect from Petty. Yes, it’s rebounding.

The 6-foot-3 forward is physical, quick, and will grab more boards than the Buckeyes, but there are pros and cons within the post-game. On one hand, Petty hasn’t fouled out of a game, despite the manner in which she grabs boards. That shows discipline to not foul in the act.

On the other hand, free throw efficiency doesn’t jump off the stat sheet. Petty is a 50.7% shooter from the line, meaning when the game is on the line, the old “Hack-a-Shaq” game plan could come into play.
Also, Petty doesn’t provide an outside shooting game. In four seasons, Petty hasn’t attempted a three-point shot. If McGuff had years with Petty, that might be something to improve over time but there’s one season before Petty’s eligibility runs out. That means the five-out offensive game plan will adjust slightly, with defenders not going to run out and cover Petty on the perimeter.
That doesn’t likely mean an all-out shift in offensive strategy but expect tweaks.
Off the court, Petty’s already saying what needs to be said and is a team-first kind of player.
“My mindset currently is just to come in, you know, do whatever the team needs me to do,” said Petty. “Whether it’s stepping into a leadership role, whether it’s following TT [Taylor Thierry] and all the other older people who’ve already been here. It’s whatever the team needs me to be.”

Prediction

There’s a close to 100% chance Petty starts from day one and doesn’t lose it, barring injury. Petty will not only grab boards but be an outlet to a group of four surrounding the big who all have the ability to attack the basket. The speed and skill of the four perimeter players could make life difficult for defenders, and give Petty open baskets in the paint as a by-product.

Petty of course won’t be able to play 40 minutes each night. Supporting the forward is a pair with varying levels of experience. Forward Eboni Walker has the most, but McGuff is high on new freshman center Elsa Lemmilä. The 6-foot-6 Finnish big is the likely next player in behind Petty.

Highlights

Watch Petty in an exhibition game before last season. Outside of rebounding, Petty shows presence and timing to pick up blocks and see her work on the offensive end of the floor.

Am wondering if this wealth of tall talent will push Taylor Thierry (TT) out of her comfort zone. TT would lurk on the edges, and then slash in to grab the board for a put-back or kick-out. Didn't realize that tOSU had worst rebound stat in the league. Don't remember (brain fuzz) if TT made a basket outside of 6'....nonetheless, she was either the 3-4 leading scorer in the box score. And not to forget, that TT jumped center more than Mika did. Also believe that for certain sure there's no Jacy on the roster, but one that is made up of a point guard (Maddie), a shooter (tbd), and a defender (also tbd), and on-court leadership (Cotie, Maddie, TT and ?). The skill sets appear to exist within the team, will depend on McDuff to bring them out on the court. Should be an interesting season. Maybe the biggest question mark is on-court leadership, which would be to ask Cotie to evolve into a team leader this year. Go Bucks!

Ohio State women’s basketball vibe different heading into 2024-25 season

The new version of the Buckeyes are different, and that’s a good thing.

Vibes aren’t tangible. They aren’t something you can reach out and touch. File it in the same category as someone having an aura. Even so, you can sense it. It’s a feeling that radiates off a person or in the case of Ohio State women’s basketball: an entire team.

Covering and following this team for the past three seasons, there are of course roster changes. A player’s time in college is finite, and the transfer portal allows a player to make the most of that time and find the environment that suits them best.

What’s going on with the Scarlet and Gray this year is different, but don’t take it from someone covering it.

Cotie McMahon is one of those people who radiate vibes. She’s someone who shares her emotions and thoughts freely. They make McMahon the dominate force that she’s become for Ohio State.

When McMahon arrived in Columbus though, it was already an established side with upperclassmen who all had an extra year of eligibility due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We’ve had an older team,” said McMahon. “They’ve been in college for so long, like they have a routine and then, you know, they just want to be by themselves.”

Now, the roster reset of losing six upperclassmen to graduation or the portal isn’t only about a new on court product but the chance to create a different kind of family.
