Ohio State Women's Basketball (2023-24 B1G CHAMPS)

Assume that Eboni got her 'tiff' with McGuff all straightened out. The 'missing for personal reasons' pretty much indicates a 'sit your a** on the bench until you straighten out' type of thing. Anyway, Eboni is a bulldog, and stands tall in the paint, even when she's giving away 6-8" to the opponent. Go Bucks! If Maddie can refind her shooting stroke, or this Candace person can add points, plus maintaining the defensive prowess for tOSU press, might be OK. Losing two players to the WNBA has gotta hurt, but seems to be some good newcomers. Go Bucks!

What inside info do you have on this to take an unwarranted shot at a player? Ever heard of sick parents/grandparents/sibling? Grade problems? Mental health issues? Shall I go on?

Tara VanDerveer, NCAA's winningest basketball coach, retires

Tara VanDerveer, the NCAA's winningest basketball coach with 1,216 victories across 45 years, is retiring, Stanford announced Tuesday evening.

Negotiations are underway for Kate Paye, a former player under VanDerveer and a longtime member of her staff, to become her successor, the school added.

VanDerveer, 70, has been one of the most illustrious coaches in the sport, winning three national championships (1990, 1992 and 2021) in her 38 seasons at Stanford and guiding them to 14 Final Fours. The Naismith and Women's Basketball Hall of Famer previously coached at Idaho (1978 to 1980) and Ohio State (1980 to 1985).

Burning Question: Does Big Ten Expansion end conference title dreams for OSU women’s basketball?

The Buckeyes have new weapons aplenty, but will they have enough power to cook against two West Coast powerhouses?

For a moment there, things looked pretty bleak for Ohio State women’s basketball.

Hot on the heels of two consecutive successful seasons, which included a Big Ten regular season title and a Sweet 16 appearance in 2021-2022, followed by an Elite Eight appearance in 2022-2023, this year’s regular season brought more of the same success fans had become accustomed to.

With a 26-6 overall record (16-2 in the Big Ten), the Buckeyes once again secured the Big Ten regular season title. And then they ran out of steam. In a shocking loss, they fell to Maryland in their first game of the Big Ten Tournament before being upset at home by No. 7 Duke in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

Then came the complete roster restock.

Starters Jacy Sheldon (G), Celeste Taylor (G), and Rebeka Mikulasikova (F) finished their collegiate careers, leaving behind enormous shoes to fill. Sheldon, for example, started for most of the last five seasons, save for some injuries, and after leading the Buckeyes this season with 17.8 points and 3.8 assists per game, she was drafted by the Dallas Wings as the No. 4 overall WNBA Draft pick. Taylor averaged 10.1 points and 2.5 steals per game, and went to the Indiana Fever as the 15th overall pick, while Mikulasikova put up 9.4 points per game for her part.

Still, it was the unexpected losses that stung the most, when three backup guards entered the transfer portal. Rikki Harris and Emma Shumate (who each had the potential to help fill the gaps left by Sheldon and Taylor), plus Diana Collins hit the road, leaving head coach Kevin McGuff to pick up the pieces.

While he still had two key returners in junior forward Cotie McMahon and senior guard Taylor Thierry, he needed to bring in new faces to the mix.

He wasted no time, adding two top 25-rated transfers from the portal (forward Ajae Perry from Kentucky and guard Chance Gray from Oregon) and five incoming freshmen.

The incoming recruits include the No. 2 overall recruit in guard Jaloni Cambridge (younger sister of returning Buckeye guard Kennedy Cambridge), along with guard Ava Watson and center Ella Hobbs, both national top 100 players.

In an offseason where the mass exodus of experienced talent could have left fans with questions, McGuff quickly found answers.

But the landscape is changing, and a major conference realignment triggered by football deals has downstream implications for Big Ten Women’s Basketball. Even without the roster upheaval, the Buckeyes had their work cut out for them. The Big Ten Conference was already full of heavy hitters, and two more are about to pose a real challenge to Ohio State’s title hopes: USC and UCLA.

UCLA made it to the Sweet 16 last season after finishing the year as Pac-12 semifinalists. Now, they’re projected as high as No. 5 in (perhaps too early) preseason predictions, including that of ESPN analyst Charlie Creme.

Where the Buckeyes had to scramble to fill roster holes, the Bruins have been sitting pretty—six of their top eight scorers are back for the 2024-2025 season.

And then there’s USC, hot on the heels of a successful run that ended with an Elite Eight appearance. The Trojans join the Big Ten as last year’s reigning Pac-12 Champions, and Creme puts them at No. 2 in his predictions. No doubt, that’s in large part because of sophomore standout JuJu Watkins, whose name will likely be on everyone’s lips yet again. Watkins spent her freshman year smashing records (including, it’s worth noting, Caitlin Clark’s record as the highest-scoring freshman), for which she was named Freshman of the Year and earned All-America First Team honors.

After her overseas trip last year, Cotie came back and started hot for the Buckeyes in her sophomore year. Hopefully, she comes back and continues that pattern in her junior year. Looks like some good pieces on the team, and -finally- some mobile/strong heighth up front. They'll be green, but with some potential. Been watching the WNBA (due to the CC aura), and drool at those bigs running the floor, rebounding, and putting the ball in the hole. Hoping that these newbies bring that to Ohio State basketball. Go Bucks!

NO TIME TO SLEEP. One order of Shrimp on the Barbie for Ms. Sheldon, please.

This week, former Ohio State and current Dallas Wings guard Jacy Sheldon signed a contract with the Townsville Fire for the upcoming 2024 WNBL season in Australia. Sheldon will use her time in the league to develop and enhance her skills against professional competition before returning to the Wings next summer.

“Jacy is a very exciting player who has the ability to turn a game with her elite speed and shooting,” Townsville head coach Shannon Seebohm said in a statement. “She’s an extremely tough defender and competes every second she is on the floor. Additionally, she’s a great person and someone who ticked all the boxes for us during the recruiting process. We are really excited to have her join our team as soon as she completes her rookie WNBA season.”

Cotie is representing Team USA U23 in this 3X3 and the coaching shortcomings of McDuff are glaring. Cotie watches what is happening way too much. She could be one of the most influential basketball players in the country this year but the bad habits of the girls team is so telling. She watches way too much when she isn't directly involved in the play which is what I feel is the biggest problem with all Ohio State teams. BE the best player on the court at all times! P{lease God don't waste this once in a lifetime talent.

Dusting off the oldtime memories. At tOSU, Hondo Havlicek was a defensive ace. With the Celtics, he developed into a all-time scorer. What changed? Nothing. Hondo was always moving, and at the NBA level, was getting open. That led to him shooting more, and making more. Believe he's in top 10-15 of all-time scorers in the NBA. Cotie, take note. Keep moving, breaking toward the basket, and otherwise keep getting open. Make yourself a target for the ball. Don't take a play 'off'. Heck, Boston has become an all-star because she's always working to get open, and CC is finding her. Kelsey Mitchell as well. That's for more recent history buffs. Go Buckeyes, this could be shaping up to be a banner year for both basketball teams.
