Game Thread Ohio State vs Oklahoma, 09/09/17 @ 7:30 ET (ABC)

Well, BN27, I guess we try to present a welcoming place for fans from other teams for discussion.

I just watched Oklahoma against UTEP. Their offense looked good, but against a really bad defense. Their defense also appeared to have some problems in the secondary, as Ohio State did, early on.

Computers have their limitations, especially as the early ratings are affected by last year, but the Massey ratings are as follows:

Team, ranking, offensive ranking, defensive ranking
Ohio State 5, 20,4
Oklahoma 6, 2, 30
Indiana 68, 61,60
UTEP 153 48, 165

In a head-to-head simulation, Indiana would be expected to beat UTEP 41 -21, with more than 90% probability of winning.
Both Ohio State and Oklahoma exceeded the winning margin of the Massey model by 10 points in their first game.
In a head-to-head simulation, Ohio State would be expected to beat Oklahoma by the home field advantage of 2.5 points, so a close game.

A consideration. The game predictions of the computer models will change in the next few days as they factor in the first games. The models that performed most accurately in the first week (> 90% accuracy) have Ohio State as about a TD favorite. Having watched both games, i would be comfortable with that, but I think that Ohio State's ability to put Mayfield under pressure could increase that margin.
Oh, welcome away. I just think it would be hilarious when a troll comes over talking shit and is 100% ignored.

That's an accurate assessment. But I'm actually more comfortable with OU being the underdog on the road because that's when they usually play with a chip on their shoulder and perform better than expected. It may not guarantee a win for OU, but at least it will look better for them if they lose close instead of in embarrassing fashion.

But Baker Mayfield has never lost a game on the road, and by that I mean on an opponent's home turf.
He has lost away from OU twice... Honestly after how poorly we played for 1 half last Thursday I think you'll see a very determined buckeye team.

To be honest, it was your first game and you all had first game jitters. The game was still never in doubt, even with IU leading at the half. Ohio State's speed and athleticism was too much for the IU players to keep up with because the Buckeyes have better strength and conditioning. Much like OU when they have these problems in the Big XII with teams like TCU and Texas Tech.

EDIT: Mia Wallace's corny tomato joke from Pulp Fiction comes to mind after writing this. "Ketchup!"

About 12 years ago, back when we were going to play Texas in a 2005/2006 home/away series, there was this Texas poster by the name of "xrayrandy" who made mind-bogglingly outlandish claims like "our LBs can run step-for-step with Ted Ginn". You are really starting to sound like this whacko. Actually, you sound more like you're trying to convince yourself that you actually have a shot in this game...

I was thinking the same thing.

@AuTX Buckeye what is the mood around Austin after Herman's stellar showing yesterday against Maryland?? I hardly see anyone wear burnt orange anymore down here in the Valley compared to 10-15 years ago. Texass blows!
Went to MT Bonnell this morning. Saw more scUM logos than Tejas. I might listen to sports radio this week. I know this they aren't happy

I'll tell you this, Texass is glued to the fact that they must hire a head coach who has ties to the OU football program. Mack Brown was OU's offensive coordinator at one point during the 1980s, and Darrell Royal their winningest coach ever was once an OU football player under Bud Wilkinson.

In order to be at OU's level of winning and competing for championships, they must hire a guy who's been a part of the OU system as a player or coach. That's how they've won their measly 4 national titles. They're learning the hard way after going through Charlie Strong and now with Sledgehammer Boy.
