Ohio State vs. Marshall, 2004

Look at it this way guys:

1. We, (once again), turned the ball over way too many times. Out of Marshall's 3 scores, 2 were directly related to a Buckeye turnover. Lydell's fumble that was returned for a score, and an ill advised pick by Justin deep in our own territory that left Marshall with a ridiculously short field for the other TD.
2. We did not tackle very well in this game.
3. We missed opportunities to convert on turnovers again. We had a great opportunity to get at least three picks, but we didn't.
4. Our young talent again played like first year starters... great one minute, poor the next.
5. Played against two teams with veteran talent while breaking in new talent on both sides of the ball on our own team.

And in spite of this, we are 2-0. One of my big concerns with this young team was whether or not it had the ability to play through adversity. To get punched in the mouth, and still find a way to pull out a game in the closing minutes. But here we had a young first year QB that after struggling for much of the second half, still managed to find a way to move the team effectively in the final seconds of the game to put our kicker in a position with a chance to win the game for us. The kid struggled with his decision making in the second half. But when the game was on the line, the kid rallied the troops and put the team in a position to win. It could have gone the other way. We could have suffered the same fate as FSU, Kansas State, Oregon State, Missou, or other teams that arguably had more "experienced" guys than we had but could not rally their their troops to still be undefeated so far. We have a long way to go, but I'll take the wins.

We are awfully young, guys. These guys are going to do great things, but they are still going to play, (for the most part), like first year players and we have to support them through this growing period.

I started the thread, which said nothing about them affecting the outcome of the game, one way or another. I just get tired of listening to the same recycled coach wannabes every week, and we don't get OSU radio out here. I didn't mean to start a pissing contest...only to say I basically can't stand listening to announcers outright root for one team or the other (in this case the other), and the fact they basically can't speak Englidh doesn't help either. As pointed out, do they matter? Not really. Is it annoying? I thought so, because I have no other audio to choose from. That's all.

Interesting

After the game there were several OSU players Balling their eyes out!!!!!! Ashton Youbooty was in tears. This game may spark our team from mental standpoint and it may bring htem closer together as a unit. Hopefully they have a great week of practice!!!!

jeff....nobody here is saying the announcers had anything to do with the outcome of the game. its just fucking annoying listening to people who want your team to lose telling you about the game.

i cant turn on my radio because i doubt 1460 is very clear over here. what are your wonderful suggestions for me???? :roll1:

I get the broadcast over the internet but it's not in real time with the live broadcast. That annoys the living shit out of me. I live in Alabama so my options are limited as far as radio stations. I do listen to 1460 for half-time analysis.

Bowden, after his comment regarding being too analytical said "I'll take him on my team." After that moment they stopped dissecting Zwick.

At the end when he grounded it, first they ripped him, then all 3 conceded, "man, he's smarter than us, if he would've waited for the TE, the game would've been over".

I noticed youboty, too. I think that when you lay it all out there on the field like he really did, controlling your tears and emotions is really just impossible, especially in a game as gutwrenching as this game had to have been for these guys (it was for me and all I did was pace and sit on my couch and sweat).

Early in the game I got the feeling that the D was a little smug out there, kind of like "we're Ohio State, and you're puny little Marshall (Arnold voice), you little girly men with M's on your helmet better run right off the field." Then Marshall just played much smarter than them. That game was definitely like kissing your sister.

Youboty played incredible from what I could tell.

To shape the metal you gotta stick it in the fire. These Buckeyes let the fire get about as hot as it could get without getting branded with an early L.

i thought the announcers were fine. i enjoyed them.

were they rooting for marshall? probably, although i didn't really notice. ALL announcers root for the underdog. who wants to watch a powerhouse school blow out a mid-major? nobody. but everybody loves a game where the mid-major is giving the powerhouse a run for their money.

at no point in the entire broadcast did i detect any kind of hatred towards osu. they didn't rip on our running game at all, and praised tressel, holmes, and our defense constantly. the only "negatives" (if you can call them that, and i don't) was them dissecting zwick a bit too much (but that's natural, what do you expect when you've got a 1st year starting QB in a mini-controversy, and this QB was also highly rated out of high school) and them pulling for marshall to make a comeback (again, if any of us were announcers and marshall was losing 21-14 late in the game to a oklahoma, usc, lsu et. al we'd all have an extra hop in our voices when marshall made a comeback).

the only announcers that i felt had any kind of negative bias towards osu were dan fouts (and he wasn't even that bad really....i just found some of his comments laughable, especially the gem about how "the fourth quarter is Dorsey Time"), and the guy in last year's ncst game (he ticked me off, but again i think it's more of a case of him being a jackass rather than him being an OSU "hater").

May and Alberts, on the other hand, those guys are definite haters.

yeah youboty and my man dustin fox were talking and youboty was tearing up it looked like. i can't believe fox got injured, luckily he will be back for purdue and michigan, the 2 teams that appear to have the most dangerous aerial assaults.

1 ) I wouldn't say the corners played bad today. 140 yards passing on 35 attempts is down right pathetic. Marshall had 3 pass plays that were 10 yds or longer all day. How can you not be happy with that ?

2) We missed too many tackles today. Salley had his normal game of a couple of missed tackles while trying to take someones head off.

3) Our punting stunk today. We got lucky on some rolls, by his hang time and distance were not good. 35.1 net punting, not too good (even without the pooch)

4) The o-line seemed to play well today. Only 1 sack and I blame that on JZ for holding the ball too long. Again , they didn't have many , if any, play penalties. Holding? False start? Mangold had the personal foul on the int return, but, they appeared to play well as a group.

5) I refuse to place any blame on the o-line for the running woes. I'll blame the coaches and the runner. LR just seems to not be able to go outside. How can we take advantage of our "athletic " line when the RB can't even get there? I understand Pittman was hurt, but maybe Mo Hall or Haw could have been in for a couple of snaps to try some outside running.

6) I'll have to respectfully disagree with Clarity on this one. Nuge was a big stud today when it mattered. With all the pathetic kicking performances going on this season, its nice to have a guy that can drill a 55 yarder with the game on the line, wind in your face, and facing a kick that was 5 yds longer because of a penalty. Throw in the fact that the kick was from the left hash, and not the middle, and I wonder how many kickers n ther NCAA would have made it that easy. Before he lined up, I just didn't have a good feeling of us surviving ot if Nuge didn't make the kick. Credit to the D for holding Marshall on their last series and forcing the punter to not hit a very good punt. Credit to the offense (read Zwick and Holmes) for the outs which picked up 20 yds on 2 plays while using minimal time.

7) That last defensive series, offensive series and kick, all combined to win us the game. Therein lies the difference between being lucky and being good ! It just happens too many times to be considered lucky.

8) I'm no coach, but could not understand accepting the penaly on 3rd down that deep into our territory. I would decline every day, and take the chance with trying to hold on 4th and 9, especially with such a short field. It opens the field up alot more when you're on the 23 yd line as opposed to the 9. Second guessing ! I did notice on the penalty acceptance, JT appeared to want to decline it , but saw Snyder waving take it and then appeared to change his mind. Did anyone else see that ? I thought JT appeared to be trusting his defensive coach on that one.

I'm still waiting for the part where you disagree. All I said was Nugent didn't singlehandedly win the game while everyone else stunk up the field. What you just said sounds quite a bit like that.

Why weren't Branden Joe or Tony Pittman handed the ball today? I thought Joe was almost guaranteed to play.

I won't knock on Lydell Ross anymore. He is what he is. And our OL cannot be expected to become what it is not overnight. I think we need to consistently play out of a 2 RB and 1TE set. Only the RB (Joe, Pittman, Parker, whoever) that can actually run for some meaningful yardage against a decent opponent (Ross clearly is not that person) should carry the ball and the TE and the other RB should help the OL in run-blocking. If we can achieve at least modest success that way, the same set can be used for two extra WRs when needed.
