Ohio State vs. Marshall, 2004

It seems we either over-pursued or reacted late on delayed handoffs. We also missed more tackles than I've seen at Ohio State in a long time. Is our D terrible? Of course not. Are they "better than last years" as I've heard several times lately? HECK NO! We've found some room for improvement today, but at least we got the W.

My areas of concern are now:
Running game/Sustained drive
Turnovers
Playcalling
Defensive Line
Punting
Kick coverage
Missed tackles
Inability to create a turnover

How are you feeling, C? You wife said the Hurricane effected you health. This game probably didn't help either, lol

Worst run I've had to date by a longshot. The lightning strike is responsible for 90% of that, as we got fairly lucky in terms of the power mostly staying on during Frances. There were a couple ugly moments in the past week, but I'm still here typing and annoying people. I just can't sit up (let alone stand up and/or walk) or talk, but who needs that? Lol. It all is what it is, just an annoyance and distraction. Thanks for asking. And yes, I needed some extra meds after the game.

Like Clarity said, the defense was on the field waayyy more than it should have been today. The offense that Marshall came out with required a ton of running around by the Buckeye d and the O's mistakes didn't really give the defense a breather when it should have. I was down on the defense initially, but after some reflection, I am please by what I saw out of the young defense today. They were gassed in the second half, though. That's why we saw the running game that we did out of Marshall, IMO. The mistakes that we saw today are all coachable mistakes. You can't coach speed, size, and aggressiveness. This team has that. Marshall and Cincy both have very experienced QB's and OSU does not, but he's getting that experience every week. NC St. has a very inexperienced QB as well, and I think that there will be some more looks pulled out of the defensive bag next week. The coaches aren't going to pull out all the stops against teams like Cincy and Marshall.

I do think that a change at RB is going to be necessary before too long. I think that Pittman was being held out because he was dinged up, but I don't know for sure. Ross just doesn't look like he's running with authority out there. He always looks like he's in pain and he runs with heavy feet. IMO, we need to mix it up at RB next week in Raleigh. I have faith that the coaches will have this team ready for a tough game next week.

Look I recognize that this was a team win...... but dude in the second half we didn't score till nugent kicked us the winner........Now I know you're trying to make a point that maybe if we didn't make the turnovers we probably win in good fashion but we made the turnovers and they capitalized. I'm in no way saying we're doomed for the year and we're done. I'm saying we just need to get better in all aspects on defense right now and that even includes our Linebackers. Now who am I to say we didn't play well ? I'm just a fan and they decide what to call and what they are going to run and I respect that. However, I think our game plan was totally what it shouldn't of been. Hell I don't even know what the game plan was? I guess just to stop the deep pass routes (which we did), but in retrospective we gave up rushing yards and the short out patterns and also screens as well. Plus I would also like to know how many 3 and outs they really had man. It couldn't of been many. Teams do have to run against us to win the game and I think we forgot what got us 18 home wins straight (RUN DEFENSE), and make a team one demensional with the pass. I think we need to just sell out alittle more on defense. With our speed we should compensate for our gambles. Any how I totally agree nugent didn't WIN the game parsay but he did bail us out because we were totally flat at that point.

In a nickle package it doesn't cover lateral passes as well as a 3-4. it covers deep zones. It doesn't cover the the lateral passes because the two linebackers are sucked into the middle of the field instead of playing the flats. also with a 3-4 it creates angles and blitzing options that are very hard to pick up and a defense can disguise them very easily. Now I mean I hvae no clue if that wouldv'e helped, but I mean what I'm trying to say is maybe with our young defensive line we should play to our strenghts (linebackers).

I pray to god that we never have Terry Bowden call another game for us.
I thought Terry was actually pretty pro-OSU today and was getting crap from the other two for it. He was actually trying to argue that Lydell's fumble should have been overturned. I agree they had stopped his forward progress, but unfortunately there was no whistle.

IMO he was the least biased of the three.

In a Nickle formation our Linebackers would probably be Hawk and Carpenter with D'Andrea as a once in awhile rush end.

Also I want to add that in a 3-4 the speed on the edges and outside would be rediculous. Hawk and Carpenter to cover the flats? you can forget about that short bull shit to the receivers. Just think if our defense would play bumb on receivers and get jams on them? which in most cases will either make the QB hesitate on those short throws waiting for it to get open or have to go to a second option and that is where our defensive line would benefit because they in that case would have more time to get after the QB.
