Ohio State vs. Marshall, 2004

Why wouldn't a nickel cover laterally??

Nickel is not a designated coverage but a personnel package...

That personnel brings more speed and more elusive speed...

Hawk and Carpenter to cover the flats?
As compared to a Whitner or Ginn? Stopping the slip screen or bubble screen is penetration...beat the blocker to the block. I believe Id take the Nickel personnel

In a Nickle formation our Linebackers would probably be Hawk and Carpenter with D'Andrea as a once in awhile rush end.
Maybe but then again it depends on the weekly scheme...if it is a long down situation you are probably right. If it is a spread offense all day and nickel is our main D...a runstopper like AS is nice too

Jeff I heard Tirco cheering on Marshall players. WTF is that shit!!! Announcers are supposed to be unbiased. You could tell the whole booth wanted us to lose.

Yeah, look at how un-excited Tirico was when Nugent hit the game winning kick. In fact I think you could hear him say, "How lucky can you get!!" It's true...look at the videotape....

Since when do the announcers matter, one way or the other?

Where did anyone point out they did matter?

I'm not sure if it's the fact we are the favorites in most games and some of these broadcasters just root against us because the underdog winning makes for a better story but it does seem that more often than not the announcers are anything but pro-Ohio State. I think it's kinda funny actually, especially if we keep on winning ball games

Did you notice the title of the thread, not to mention some of the posts herein?

I really don't care what the national talking heads say about OSU, whether they are fair or biased one way or the other. If those blowhards upset you, then tune them out.

Yeah, I saw the title of the thread. So what? Did you hear the announcers today? Did they seem to want Marshall to win? I think they did. Do I give a shit? No, but I don't see the problem in pointing it out.

If you don't like the thread topic, take your own advice...tune it out.

What I mean is this In a Nickle coverage you have 5 Db's..... and in our case (cover 2) both our Saftey play over top, our corners play 10 yards off and we keep things in front of us which is fine if you can get consistent pressure from the D-line. Another thing is since there are 5 Db's one side of the field 1 Db will be forced to cover very tightly and then that makes one of the two linebackers to cover alittle more toward the weaker side. If you run a nickle in most cases the Linebackers play inside the Defensive ends so therefore they are not in the position to get out to the flats fast enough to be effective in the short passing game. I'm not saying abandon the 4-3 , but just saying maybe the 3-4 look should be used more often? Also the difference in having Carpenter or Hawk out there compared to Whittner or Ginn it really doesn't matter because in your case the Lb's in the Nickle Defense are most likly in curl routes and which in result gives them the angle on the flat routes. I understand where you're coming from with the speed but Carp and Hawk are more than plenty fast enough and have better tackling ability. Also when you talk about penetrating a screen pass wouldn't you rather have a 250 pound OLB rather than 180 pound DB? This is why I say JAM the reciever and make him get off the ball and make a play to just get those 5 yards instead of just in all honesty giving them up. I agree it is just on a week to week type deal and I'm not saying I'm right by any means. I just think we need to play with our strenght you know what I'm saying man because you know our linebackers are nasty! AS is a very good run stopper from what I saw, but I do like the combo of size and speed from D'Andrea even better. I would like to see a combonation of 3-4 with a Nickle look as well. I think the Nickle look is very effective but not so in the short passing game thats why we usually only run it with long down situations.

GO BUCKS!!

I don't want to get in a pissing contest but we played a nickel quite a bit today it was whitner. We couldn't have run the 3-4 much because they were running the ball down our throat. The 3-4 doesn't help against the run because it gives the ol an easier second level block, which is to say they get on our lb's easier. Though it seemed pretty easy today. The nickel does help protect the flats because what it does is it allows you to play the nickel back on the slot or if its a four wide set, we walked an olb of to cover the otherside and played 2 deep.

The Positives

There were a lot of things that OSU could have and should have done better today, but there were also somethings that they did well that should also be mentioned.

1. They won a close game. One of the big questions we have this year is "Can OSU win the close game without CK?". Although JZ had some mistakes, he played very well and he showed great poise and great awareness by spiking the ball early and taking the penalty I see time expire in a lot of games where the QB could do this and i wonder why they dont. The defense, although it didnt look great and was over powered on several drives, only gave up 14 points and came up big when it was needed.

2. Passing game. Most of the other receivers were quiet, but Holmes picked up for them by being such a bad ass. JZ had a couple problems but he will get better as he got better from last week (no fumbles on his end).

3. Pass protection. When JZ threw the ball he had time.

4. NUGE.

5. Oh and WE HAVE ONLY LOST 2 GAMES IN THE LAST 3 YEARS. Who else can claim that (can anyone else).

Our ol does not move their feet and they have problems substaining their block after first contact. Lydell isn't a 25-to 30 carry back, I don't think he has problems seeing the hole, he has to shut down to make a cut ( shut down meaning slowdown). He doesn't run down hill!!!!!

and in our case (cover 2)
Why cover 2 then? Why not 3 when we would have a DB covering flats on both sides? I'm saying it was not the defense or the scheme but the execution. The Cbs must attack outside in and count on pursuit.

in a trips set in Cover 3 you are looking at the SS on either side jamming the middle receiver and covering flats....
