FLORIDA ATLANTIC DEBRIEFING: OHIO STATE OPENS SEASON WITH WIN, BUT A LOT OF WORK NEEDS TO BE DONE

106327_h.jpg

Welcome back. I hope your offseason was bearable. Ohio State opened the season with a 45-21 win over Lane Kiffin and Florida Atlantic yesterday. It was good at the beginning, then it was not as good.

Let's debrief.

THE SHORT STORY
Ohio State opened this season in incredible fashion. The Buckeyes scored 28 points in the first quarter, behind a Justin Fields 51-yard touchdown run and three touchdown passes (to Binjimen Victor, Chris Olave, and Jeremy Ruckert).

The Buckeyes offense was then very sluggish, punting five times and fumbling twice before scoring late in the third quarter on another pass from Fields to Ruckert.

FAU scored their first touchdown early in the fourth quarter. Ohio State responded with a J.K. Dobbins touchdown scamper of his own. Both teams traded scores one more time, with FAU adding a two-point conversion on their touchdown while Blake Haubeil banged in a field goal, leading to our final score of 45-21.

QUICK BREAKDOWNS
Offense

Justin Fields made his Buckeye debut and promptly set the record with five touchdowns to lead the way. Four scores were through the air, as mentioned, and the receivers were open on most of them. Fields made a couple really nice throws but also had some instances where he should have thrown the ball away.

Does 2014 Virginia Tech not count?

I wondered the same thing.

The only way it makes sense is if by "home opener" they mean "the first game of the season and played in Columbus" Both parts of the statement having to be true.

So '14 doesn't count because it wasn't the first game of the year.

OR

as @Systems_id said, maybe OSU was technically the home team vs Navy

Either way, it's a technicality

something else we may be seeing; mixing in all the zone is, essentially, designed to keep things in front of you and make the other team execute over the long field betting, obviously, that they can't do it.

One side effect of that approach is that it keeps your defense on the field longer and conversely lowers the number of play per game for your offense.

Total plays vs FAU: 74
Avg plays p/game 2018: 82.4

8 plays at 6.5 ypp is about 50 yards
50 yards is about 4 points

you need to see that 4 point delta made up for in defensive PPG allowed or the trade off isn't worth it

Last years defense gave up 25.5 p/game. Today was 21

not enough to draw any conclusions yet obviously but something to keep an eye on.

Hafley said they didn't make any adjustments because they knew they were going to win, and they just wanted to keep it simple.

Which is coach-speak for "they didn't want to put anything on film."

The ability to mix coverage is the simple answer when people start beating the "soft spot in the zone" thing to death. It's the same as press man (or anything else in this world actually), if you are predictable and dogmatic there are ways by which you will be exploited. Sit in cover 3 all day and accurate passers (most teams) will pick you apart. We've seen what they do to you if they know you are in press man 90% of the time. Unpredictability, the ability to shape your opponent and adapt to your environment are the surest way (superior athletes sure as hell help).

I don’t know man. I understand there were glimpses of absolute dominance; however, I’m really curious about how downfield passing is going to develop. We’ve seen how badly the offense can ossify when it’s an absent approach.

I’d like to see Fields make quick decisions on a more consistent basis; the offensive line definitely had moments of criticism but I can’t act like there weren’t instances in which he had almost 5 seconds because there were plenty.

So if we are going to tell ourselves no one was open, is there not reason to be concern that this group of receivers can’t get open against the no fly zone of fucking FAU?

Not panicking, but like Platt said there is a lot to clean up (at the very least).

I think that it’s pretty hard to say what we’re going to see going forward. As you said, there were times when JF had more time to find a receiver in one play than the length of a couple of the early scoring drives. I swear I had at least three or four eight-counts before he unloaded.

Some of that may have been great OL play... some of that could have been that they were dropping eight. Dropping eight should create running opportunities for the QB that were, by in large, not taken. I suspect some of that was per instruction from the sidelines... but a few QB scrambles or designed delayed runs to keep the D honest and downfield passing will open up. Given that it looked like they tried to keep JF clean, which at this point in the season was the correct thing for the bench to do, it took the counter move away which lead to a bit of bleh few quarters.

The game was never really in jeopardy and there’s bigger things to play for than a 70-0 blowout.

I’m walking away with lots of reasons to be optimistic about the ceiling and yet pleased that there were enough mistakes on both sides of the ball that the team has a reason to remain humble in the film room and will get after it in practice. It was the first game of the season, after all.

Here’s another of my favorites while we’re taking advice from ol’ Bruce:
