Game Thread Ohio State vs Florida Atlantic - 08/31/19, 12:00PM (FOX)

That's all this is... offense losing its focus for 3/4th the game.

Defense played very well but was put in 2 tought spots due to turnovers.

IMO on offense we've got to run JF. We've got to allow him to take over games.

Which maybe we do considering the next few games, but we can't be so predictable on offense if we are going to challenge.

Generally agree. The defense played great in spots and well enough overall, particularly compared to last year.

I think they need to run Fields a bit more but not like they have in the past. Better pass blocking is needed from the offensive line regardless. Perhaps they lost focus as you said and they’ll be better next week.

FAU sold out on Dobbins which worked for awhile but they eventually got worn down. So I’m not too upset about it for now. It is definitely something to watch for in coming games plus the play calling.

UCLA is TERRIBLE. Their QB makes Bauserman look serviceable. And yet the Bruins still had a shot with three minutes to go.
I'm expecting that kind of game where we see an absolutely crap Cincy team make a game of it for a half to three quarters. And then, we have Buckeye "fans" verbally cutting their wrists and running around screaming the sky is falling. The turnovers and sloppiness in the UCLA Cincy game was stunning.

maybe it was me being drunk but I don’t think the oline was bad at all. Play calling and bad reads (or no reads if the staff didnt want Fields running) on the zone play made things look bad. Couple of times Fields by passed open check downs and rolled out into trouble. I recall one play where two linemen pulled and each executed great blocks but there were 3 defenders to cover. how is that the line’s fault?
saying they were dominated by FAU’s front 7 is asinine.

just my opinion.

Damn passed out for the second round games... thoughts about our game after sleeping on it lol.

1. The defense played really well. The difference in how we ran to the ball was very noticeable. Too bad the back ups did not really perform because giving up 21 was not indicative of how the starters performed.

2. Fields was really good too. He had a couple drops early but I thought he did what was expected.

3. We just became predictable after we went up 28. We thought we could just roll our helmets out there and win big. First down particular we lost our edge.

4. I am shocked our defense didn't take the ball away. In fact I'm surprised we lost the TO battle.

5. I think we just became vanilla on offense and pretty much smothered ourselves. I doubt we call plays scared for big games but IMO that's what we did when we went up big. Justin could've went for 200 yards rushing today but we handed the ball off a ton on first down which set up 2nd and long situations. First downs in particular we struggled to be creative I thought.

Overall.. pretty good. A big time let down by the offense for about 1.5 quarters but a good first step.

Proctor had an INT on defense.

I can’t believe I have any complaints considering how slowly we’ve routinely started against lesser teams. That said, I’m concerned about the offensive line. No way they should be handled by FAU’s front seven, but they were. Fields didn’t have much time to throw in the second and third and they did a good job boxing in JK. That needs to be fixed in a hurry. The catbears are fired up for next week and Indy almost always gives us a game and FAU isn’t as good as either of them.

UC's offense is really limited, even though the QB is pretty decent, and it's pretty clear that Fickell's more from Tressel's coaching tree than Meyer's on that side of the ball. The only way I think OSU gets in trouble is if Fields can't handle UC's multiple looks on defense and gives them 3-4 turnovers, and I think Day will give him simpler reads and quicker throws to make that less likely. The O may look ugly at time next week, but I think they'll hit a few big plays and will only need 21 points or so to win.

I agree that Fields' decisions (or, as you said, the play calling if some plays that looked like zone reads but might have just been hand offs) made them look worse at times, but they also were pretty poor a lot of the time IMO.
